Hey folks!
I was invited down to Sci-Fi City in Orlando FL for an RTT today, and made the 2.5 hour trip from Jacksonville, FL since I don't have a FLGS here to play at; 2,000 point tournament using Adepticon missions.
1. Awesome store. It was the biggest gaming store I've ever been to in my life. And I've been to a *lot* of stores. It was like a pilgrimage.
2. The store bought pizzas for all the gamers for lunch. They said that they started doing it to set themselves apart from other stores. It was awesome.
3. Zero drama. Fething about time I get to go to a FLGS tournament, and everyone is nice, fun to play against, and dice can be rolled without drama.
4. Did I mention how awesome the store was? They have a corner of the store lined with 6 big screen TVs, with $600 gaming chairs facing them and X-Box 360s where you can go play whatever games you want (they have a selection, or you can bring your own). The place is cavernous, and up top they have the cardboard life-sized movie cutouts for all the characters from Star Wars, Star Trek, Terminator, some stuff I don't even recognize....they had every paint, literally every model from every line of games; money was spent. More money will be spent. =p
5. The TO was knowledgeable about the rules, the players were all friendly....my wife is eager to get back into playing 40k because of how great the tournament was run and the players who were there. If only they weren't 2.5 hours away, I'd be there more often than for RTTs.
If you live in Orlando or FL.....hope to see you there for a future event.

Just to say my piece:
The store is awesome. The manager and the staff were great, very helpful and nice, and the gamers did not smell.
EVERYONE BATHED AND WORE DEODORANT! YAY!
It was nice to be in a well air conditioned and non-smelly store.
I'm thrilled to have found this store. Sad that it is so far away, but I like enough to travel there. Even though I didn't play today, I talked to the guys and hung out and they were all very nice. No creepies at all. Totally different from our local scene.

That store was nearly half the fun of going to the Necronomicon in 2009. Best store I've even been to.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby. |

Thank you for coming down. It was great to hear you had a good time.
I invited you because I knew you would have significantly less drama then what you have posted previously.
I look forward to actually playing you. Your game against Lazarus's Eldar looked like a tough, hard fought one. I think the only reason you guys tied for first place was a combination of his painting scores and a few extra BPs he had going into that game. That last mission was hard, very hard to get a clear victor. For my money, you won that match.
We have a tough competitive scene here, but every one is very friendly and non- WAAC. I am glad you enjoyed it.

Hey!
I'm glad you had a good experience coming down here to play and we hope to see you & your crew again. I've just officially waded back into the tourney scene so I'll be a regular from now on.
@Mahu
Yeah, our game was hard fought and I was totally surprised that I could even last vs. everything he had with that deployment and him going first. I'd certainly count him as the overall winner of that game (mixed points on primary, he had secondary and we drew tertiary). Note to self: read the whole mission. lol Having to face both him and Federal in the same event should be illegal.

Glad you had a great time Dash. I was bummed I couldn't play due to other commitments. At least those commitments involved steak and getting completely hammered. Walking around watching the games, everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves and the pizza was a nice touch. Hopefully we see you and your friends come down again. I'll definitely be there for the next one.

When I lived in Jacksonville I would drive down to Orlando to play in RTTs. I think I played in one RTT in Jacksonville and a lot down in Orlando/Kissimee.
They have a good 40k set up down there. Too bad Rhubarb games went under but there is still Sci-Fi City, and Colosseum of Comics. I wish Phoenix had half the 40k scene that Orlando has.
Now all you have to do is take a couple of 4 hour drives to Tampa like I did.

Glad to hear Sci-fi met expectations! Its always been a pain for me because of all the construction on Colonial for the past couple of years. If you like coming down to Orlando to do tournaments check out Paladin Tech and Games, much smaller store but friendly as well.
I always wished Sci-fi would have been more accessable from where I lived, all the construction was a pain but the place is amazing... all the swords behind the counter always held my attention. heh.

I'm not so much a fan of team vs team games....anytime you add someone to a team, the overall effectiveness automatically goes down from what a single player is capable of doing themselves. The only exception would be my wife playing with me as my teammate, and then she's basically just doing what I say anyway - making it the optimal team in that a single person is making overall tactical decisions for two armies. But...not the spirit of the 2v2 environment.
And besides, since team rules are shared, we would be forced to take Orks and Necrons, and my Monolith wall with KFF support and extreme Loota smackdown (no troop choices required? No warriors in my list!!) would raze the field. =p

Are you the guy who was banned from the stores in Jacksonville? No offense man I just heard (this weekend infact) someone would be gaming at SCi-fi because they got banned from the stores in JV.

Ah ok. Yea I already heard all about that this weekend. I play 40k, but not at tourney level (as i don't have that many models..yet), and in all my games i play for fun and not winning as i think the fun is more important aspect of the game and that people should play with the army they want, and how they want (within the bounds of the rules - I.E. play-style.)
I mostly play fantasy anyway, and will be playing at armadillo. It would be nice to meet you though (when i go to Sci-fi to buy reaper stuff), even though what i've heard about you.

*laughing*
There's a country full of gamers who have met me at tournaments from California to Florida to Philadelphia, and every experience has been a good one - and you can read all about it.
There's a handful of gamers largely centralized in Jacksonville, FL that have done their best to slander and libel me. Unfortunately, their influence has spread north and south a tiny bit, but largely localized.
The link in my signature is worth a read; the whole story is there, replete with all supporting threads / forum links / etc....so you can decide if what you've heard about me is justified. The evidence is all there.
It sucks that I don't have a store here; Suncoast Comics needs to burn to the ground for its poor treatment of people. Chip at Borderlands has never met me, but told me on the phone he didn't want me to game at his store. I could probably walk in and shop and game and he'd be none the wiser....but for his attitude and willingness to be influenced by bad people I'd prefer not to support his store. *shrugs* In the last month I've gotten 3,000 points of Necrons and 2,000 points worth of Space Marines.....and Dark Eldar will be here in a month. I'll be making more trips down to Orlando for tournaments, if for no other reason than I'll be needing a new DE codex and probably some models. They don't deserve my money locally. =p
Besides, acquiring models is the hardest part. I have gaming tables at my house; quite a few of my friends do as well, and there's a growing group (or at least more people speaking up) who refuse to game at Suncoast. Its gratifying to know that I'm not even remotely alone, and various of us get together on weekends to game. And if nothing else, I have Vassal!

I think he was referring to this:
Do check out Armadillo Games in Orlando some time, its a bunch of great folks and its slightly closer then Sci-Fi. (I drive from Flagler to their regularly). There will be a 40k Team Tourny on the 16th
Which is the equivalent to saying "Yeah, I am glad you enjoyed McDonalds, but you will really enjoy Burger King. And it's closer!" Which is a little in bad taste.
Granted, I am a Sci-Fi regular, and I have met John Vega and wish him nothing but the best in his creation of a new hobby store (which only makes the hobby stronger), and I really have no allegiance to Sci-Fi other then that is where my friends go, but it gets tiring when people constantly point out other stores whenever somebody has anything good to say about Sci-Fi.
Now, we have a great community of stores. Pheonix Games is developing their own comunity and has space to match Sci-Fi. Paladin has a great location with an awesome organizer. And Collisium of Comics recently grew bigger as well and I have heard nothing but good things. We all have our preferences when it comes to gaming.
I could be wrong but that was my take on things. Talking to Dash when he visited just showed my how grateful I am that I live close to such a great place for wargaming. Almost every week, I can walk into a tournament at a number of different friendly gaming stores, and meet good people and have an enjoyable game. Very few places in the country can make that claim. Orlando may not be the best, but it is close.
