Bit of a Rant:-

-POSSIBLE SPOILER!-

Ok i just finished watching episode 1 of supernatural's 6th season and im left thinking to myself....... what the hell just happened?

For those of you that watched it you will understand what i mean.
Spoiler:

  • Sam Return's.

  • After the season 5 climatic ending i had expected dean to be spending the first quarter of the season bringing Sam back/finding out that a new threat is coming. Instead
sam appears less then half way through the First episode with the simple explanation- "i just appeared'. Now i understand that he probably wouldn't have any idea why he is back but come on Really!?. Sam just comes back after a year and dean doesn't seem overly surprised or even push the matter further. I feel like i have just been dropped into the mid-season episode, not the first......

  • Sam and Dean go their Separate ways.

  • Again they are leaving each other to go on their own quests...?. They have done this enough now for us to know that its pointless and dean is just going to end up partnered with Sam again. Only i can bet that this wont happen untill mid season and we will have to suffer through 2 different storyline's and deans suburban life until we some some brotherly demon hunting.

Over all its not much, but to me i just think the whole episode was pointless. With the main base of my anger coming from how sam has just shown up after spending some time with lucifer and after a couple of days with dean he just disappears again and dean doesn't seem to give a hoot. I think i spent the whole episode expecting that this was all in Dean's head and that it was all just hallucination's caused by the yellow eyed demon.

I dont know.... its probably just me but im still confused

My Missus watches Supernatural quite a bit,and she is in complete agreement with you Jericho.

I watch with her on occasion, and while I find the program entertaining at times,I basically chalked up the "plot convenience/microwave storyline" of the opener of season 6 as "business a usual".

Yeah, seasons 4 and 5 were pretty bad. They could have been so awesome if they had taken out 90% of the whining. I couldn't stand all the I'm tired and don't really care if I go to hell crap or the I went to hell and it was horrible crap.

Firefly got screwed because of fox though. At least it had a movie.

Supernatural is on CW/WB...who know when they've got something good. Plus, they're not complete morons with when they air sci-fi/fantasy styled shows like Fox was(airing Firefly on Tuesday nights against comedies/family shows was a dumbarse move and they should have known better).

Seasons 4-5 weren't terrible, but it wasn't nearly as good as 1-3. Part of the issue was season 4 started something, during a writer's strike, that wouldn't have been started otherwise. They had to keep running with it, or just can the show altogether.

Farscape and Babylon 5 both didn't get "canned". They ran their full length, then ended. Babylon 5 still has movies slated to come out, and Farscape went out with a bang courtesy of "The Peacekeeper Wars".

Firefly, past season one, probably would have gone downhill like Dollhouse did. Whedon's good...but sometimes he doesn't know where he's going with something, or he jumps the shark waaaaaaaaaaay too early in a show's life.

Farscape got canned, if you'd followed even part of the story behind it you know that. The fans from day one where trying to get it brought back, there where efforts made my the cast, crew, writers etc to keep it in mind where it mattered, and that continued effort eventually led to financial backers from Europe which allowed them to do Peacekeeper Wars.

It also wasn't a 'big bang' but a half chance to at least give the show a decent ending, unlike many others which just stopped dead. I took it thankfully for what it was, but it should have been so much more.

When you read about the many ideas they had, and what they had hoped to continue doing with the show, well its a big of Kidney blow to be honest. Farscape had at least another two or three good seasons in it.

No, it really didn't have "another two or three good seasons in it".

It had maybe one. And considering that I watched it all as it first aired on SciFi...the closest it came to "being canned", was when they announced they were having their last season.
I don't know what "story" you've heard, but the creators were content to just let it lie until they got financial backing from Europe.

Sci-fi withdrew funding of the fifth season Kan, how is that not cancelled? The cast and crew where all ready working on stuff for that season, no one saw it coming.
I've seen Ben Brower and the rest of the cast talking about how they came into work, and got told it was done, it compleately came out of the blue just before the fourth season was aired.

How can you say you where watching from the start and not know this. All the fan sites desperately campaigning to get it back. Hell they held back the sets instead of getting rid of them due to that massive fan response, but sadly it would not save the show.

What ticked me and many other fans off, was Sci-fi canned it to save money, and then a year later announced Stargate: Atlantis was in the works. Just seemed we'll can Farscape to make another SGI blinkin show.

Having two actors stand around and emote a lot is much cheaper than having ghosts flicker in and out of existence, monsters leaping from shadows, and legions of hell streaming through open rifts in space. Plus the female fans love that stuff, and Supernatural has a bigger female fan base than male. Which is weird since its a really misogynistic show about two brothers who listen to butt rock and shoot demons.

I find it really hard to hate season 4, because of the episode "Wishful Thinking," which brought us a giant porn-obsessed teddy bear that fails to kill itself with a shotgun blast to the head. And that, my friends, that is QUALITY TELEVISION. You cannot ask for more than that.

Farscape was canned. The Peacekeeper wars was created due to successful demand from the audience, it was a tv movie that condensed a good amount of what should have been an entire series into it but it remains an imperfect and 'rushed' job. It was a godsend for us fans, but it simply tied it up, not finished it and allowed it to be as good as it should have been. Many questions still remained, the Nebari virus for example.

Babylon 5 was canned by Warner Bros, that's why Series 4 had to rush like a bugger to get the whole Shadow War finished. TNT then picked up the series, but by then, major parts of series 5 had been condensed and forced into series 4, hence series 5 feeling so disjointed and odd and the fairly rushed way in which the vorlons and shadows packed their bags and left in series 4, ending the shadow war with a fairly damp whimper.

I Actually enjoyed season 5 and i think the whole war on earth thing was a good story-line but i think that they should have ended it right there (maybe without sam falling into the cage with lucifer though).

Based of the latest episode though it just seems like they are just taking parts of other episodes that got good ratings (e.g the yellow eyed demon, Dean finding a home, sam and dean parting ways, old family members coming back) and sticking them together to make "new" ones.

As for the Farscape, babylon 5 and firefly talk:
-Farscape and babylon got great runs and i think they were wise to finish them rather than continue with boring storys.
-Firefly is and always will be my most favorite tv show. The day they cancelled it i think i may have cryed a little...( manly tears though) and the actors that have come from it have made up some of my other favorite shows.

I actually quite liked Dollhouse (though I do seem to be in a minority), and was glad they at least decided in advance it was going to get canned so the story could be "finished"

Unlike Firefly, and another favorite of mine, Carnivale.

I never really got into Supernatural tbh, I saw bits and pieces of it during the first couple of seasons, and it never really grabbed me, whic is a little odd since I generally enjoy any mythology/monster based stuff.

My GF and I watch it, it's her favorite show and I dig it too. I like the apocalypse themed stuff and she prolly just likes the fellas

We both thought it was kinda silly the way sam came back.

She was saying she read a while back that last season was supposed to be the last, hence the big ending they had. Then they got renewed and I guess they had to come up with something to keep it going. As usual hollywood put as little thought into it as possible.

I liked seeing Skinner, hope he'll be in it a lot now. I think his character is up to no good though.

I thought it was fairly obvious that the details regarding Sam's return will be part of the storyline for the season. Just had "mystery to be explained later" all over it IMO, so I don't get the hate there. The writers were in an awkward place given that they'd wrapped things up in season 5, then had to unwrap them again.

Supernatural is alright. My wife likes it more than me, really. Firefly was IMO more good than great. Always thought the female cast members had a lot to do with its popularity, with the fans crushing on one of them or the other. IMO, Whedon is better in smaller doses.

I really liked seasons 2-4 of B5, but it seemed like it got dated very quickly. Not sure I'd ever rewatch the series, if that makes sense. Meanwhile, the popularity of the various Stargate series is almost a complete mystery to me...

Regarding frustrating open-ended series finales, Twin Peaks has to top the list. It's almost 20 years later and I'm still angry about it.

    That was an awesome episode.

The thing that kinda bugged me about those seasons is that they seemed like mostly filler when they had a plot they should have been exploring. The 2 guys crying at each other was what was supposed to move the story forward. It wouldn't have been that bad in a couple of episodes but when they have the same arguments over and over it kinda gets boring.

What I would have liked to have seen in Season 5 is better monster of the week episodes. Episodes like the 4 Horseman and the Whore of Babylon. They should have looted a bunch of Christian mythology and had all the monsters show up for the filler episodes.

While there have been better supernatural episodes I still found it enjoyable. I expect sams ressurection to be explained later as it seems linked to all the monsters returning. After living normally for a year I didn't expect dean to return quickly, although I do hope it doesn't take half the series.

The style looks like it will be returning to them fighting monsters which should be good.

I don't understand all the hate for the apocalypse episodes. While they did talk a lot, I think it made the characters much more likable than if they spent the whole time just randomly killing things.

I agree. This is the problem with American television -- 22 episodes per season can lead to a lot of filler episodes if the main story isn't able to fill 22 episodes. British television, where a season ("series" to the brits) can be anything from 5 to 12 episodes, tends to make for tighter storylines.

Season 4 and 5 both would have been GREAT if they had been 12-15 episodes, but the networks just haven't embraced that kind of scheduling flexibility.

What I would have liked to have seen in Season 5 is better monster of the week episodes. Episodes like the 4 Horseman and the Whore of Babylon. They should have looted a bunch of Christian mythology and had all the monsters show up for the filler episodes.

That would have been cool. But I'm sure the show already offends enough people, and that might have been going to far.
