I think its subjective.

There do seem to be some uninspired dios and minis this time around. That's just from looking at the GW site.

Though it is worth remembering that as long as you submit a GW mini, with appropriate base, no mould lines or flash with a clean paint job its is a GD standard mini.

However, it may not be worthy of the slayer sword.

That IG diorama with the guys posing in front of the Carnifex is insane.

The best I have seen in a while certainly. Be interesting to know where it places since context is judged as well as technique and execution.

I think that unless you are privvy to the judges thoughts, this is a question with no answer. Cabinets and lighting conditions, internet photo's, opinions, reasoning, relative technical skill (and god knows how many other variables) make any judgement beyond the 2" rule a total waste of time.

I've heard this question before from so many peeps it's unbelievable (myself included!). So basically, unless you are one of the select few that get the opportunity to examine them all at 2" away irl, it's always gonna stir up some opinions that (although not entirely unjustified), are founded on little more than nothing really!

When/if you or I ever become a GD judge, only then will we know the unfathomable reasons behind the selections...

Appreciation, or lack of is not necessarily unfounded. You do not need to be a judge to voice an opinion on the quality of GD entrants.

I assume that GD judges have some strict criteria to look at when selecting winners but even their tastes will influence their opinion.

Nor did I claim that you had to be one to have an opinion, nor that having one is unfounded.

Just that unless you are one (a judge), you will never know, nor have the opportunity to veiw the entrants in any more than a second hand manner, and therefore our opinions count for bugger all beyond that of the intent in which we voice them.

And yes, judges tastes do affect thier decisions funnily enough.

Judges are like anyone else. That's the thing to remember, it's just a human decision. I've judged a few small contests and regardless of the various things you are asked to take into account there's a lot of personal taste involved. Some techniques become fashionable, certain models and themes are fashionable. Certain things won't appeal or while they show high painting ability don't show good composition or realism. And there has been accusations elsewhere on the forum that there's a bias in GD towards a certain in-crowd of people against which outsiders will struggle to be placed. I don't know. Ultimately, how many people judge each category in the competition? It can't be that many otherwise it would take too long to come to a consensus.

I know people who have won first prize in a painting competition, gone to another show and not been placed, yet many of the other models entered across several shows are the same. It's just something you have to accept. Golden Demon isn't the only major painting competition, some of the quality of ones in Europe are staggering, and within the UK there's always Euro Militaire which would be an eye opener for many I think.

Aye. I know a good few of the 'in crowd' and they certainly didn't do too well this year. It's just sour grapes really when people moan about this sort of thing. The judges dont even know who's entry is who as far as i'm aware.

And definitely agree about Euro etc. Have you seen any pics from this years event? Some simply stunning stuff there that make the 'avg' GD entry look positively amateur.

The tau titan was in the open as it was done by either one of the 'eavy metal team or a model designer , somethin like that it was in white dwarf a few months ago

I've only just noticed the little guy hiding by the stairwell on the Tau titan piece! Clearly about to melta bomb his way into glory...

Both the dioramas on the gw site look good, the fantasy one I'd like to take a closer look at as there seems to be an awful lot going you can't see from one angle.

Firewarriors don't carry melta bombs.

That tau titan was either a direct copy, or they have decided to re-make a weapon set on it:

The Tau walker in both pics are the same model, the guy did it in red, was going to enter it last year but didn't finish it (i think hes a head office/studio staffer) so this year he modified it, changed the colours and entered it.

I think that Fulgrim model is absolutely horrible. The rest of them are ok, but the image quality is pretty off on the GW site...

Hah! Good call, I didn't actually notice he was a firewarrior, I thought he was some sort of marbo-esque hooded guardsman about to strike! Not sure how I made that mistake, my 'tau-dar' seems to be rather off, perhaps because he's not bright yellow and/or in a far too dynamic/useful pose!

Agreed though, I do like that young blood commissar.

It's clearly a guardsmen in disguise, infiltrating the Tau lines to carry a melta-bomb to glory. He wants to one-up his amtes who took that pic on top the carnifex.
