Thought we would have a discussion about what keeps us motivated in this chosen hobby of ours. Seems not a day goes by without complaints from some quarter or another, so it's pretty easy to dig up what narks people off!
For me, it's the community side. Sure, I enjoy the gaming, and get a kick from fielding a fully painted, themed army, but if it wasn't for the wider community, I don't think I'd feel quite as egged on to greater and greater heights of modelling achievement/folly. Whether it's online or face to face, there is nothing like casually mentioning a half-baked idea, and having people urge you to make it a reality.
But further than just Hobby activity, I know so many people in my social scene either directly or indirectly through this Hobby. Be they former colleagues, lapsed gamers, Beginners turned Vet that I showed the ropes to, and as such having been on the move recently, it's good to know that I can walk into pretty much any game store, and start making like minded contacts to construct yet another social scene.
I'm an addict to collecting things. Not Hoarder or pack rat level, but I love collecting things.
Especially these days, the gaming takes a side track to planning, collecting, building, converting, and painting an army.

This.
I think the whole range of activities is the best part of my hobby.
The BSing at the local GW, gaming on various nights, getting together for lunch and BSing even more.
Then at home with the building and painting while I watch TV.
The internet rumor-mongering and window shopping home and work.
And when I am listening to podcasts while I work.
I have other hobbies as well, but there can be a bit of wargaming in almost every aspect of my day.
Though I do love to collect stuff. I have a dumb amount of the Confrontation and AT-43 plastics. Say what you will, but I like them.
Bam, said the lady!

I have been painting and modelling game figures for as long as I can remember. Gaming for almost as long. Internet forums are wonderful places where you can find and talk to others with the same interests, so here I am.
I enjoy painting. I rarely ever play (mostly because of part 2)
Part 2: The added bonus of Wargaming is that no matter how bad I've considered my life to be at times, all I have to do is go to the store or visit a site like Dakka to realize that I'm doing pretty good and that there's plenty of sadder people than I am. (Quick Reference: Demons on square base in 40K makes me ANGRY thread.)
The best thing about wargaming for me is the friends (almost like family) that I've made and the fact that I used a bunch of warhammer minis- such as the hydra, minotaurs, ungors, a converted Karanak, a fury, and a centigor to teach monsters from Greek mythology to sixth graders-tangible, physical objects that they can touch. Come on, using warhammer as a teacher to do your job? Yea, it's a rewarding addition to the game. And my dad said warhammer would never get me anywhere in life...
Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I like the modelling and painting aspect of it more than the gaming aspect since a lot of people around here tend to be pretentious elitists. There's definitely some nice people that are great to play with though.
I'm new, and I think the best thing is...the variation. I needed a hobby to augment my hanging around online all the time. It's a hobby that lets me build things which I love doing, it gets me good social face time, it gives me strategy to think about, a game to play, and when I get bored of one aspect? I can switch to another!
And hey, if I'm gonna collect something, might as well collect something cool.
I love planning, as that's what I spend most of my hobby time doing. I've spent hours making army lists and thinking up conversions and background for armies are probably never make. Though when I eventually do create on of my many ideas, I get a great sense of achievment.
501st Post, yeah
