As an Ork player, I am quite often faced with the situation of what to use an elite choice.
When I played Green Tide, I used Lootas. When I played Kan Wall, I used lootas, however now that I have begun Wagon Spam. I am using burnas.
But that's not what I'm here to discuss, I'm here to discuss how good are they really?
A Loota is fairly cheap model. It comes with the standard Ork boy stat line. But it comes with something quite Dakka.
The Deffgun: 48" STR 7 AP 4 Heavy D3
Yes one model can potentially fire 3 shots of strength 7, 48 inches across the board. Did I mention you can make a squad of 15 with them?!
Amazing right?
I for one love lootas, I never thought they'd be all to great, mind you though when you make your shots, it's a blast.
Lot's of Dakka, dakka, dakka everywhere.

Amazing?
Yes! Absolutely!
The models are just fun and every time I've used my Lootas, the results are always amazing.
I find my dice rolling to be pretty polar with them. I do fairly well at rolling a lot of shots (which is just fun to begin with). From there, I seem to proceed to either shoot my target off the board or pepper the area around it with bullet holes as my Lootas proceed to aim high........and wide.
I find that either result tends to amaze people.
One thing's for sure though, I have fun with my Lootas every time I play them.

Lootas are excellent units, tied with Nobs for the best elites choice for the orks. Each model is equipped with what is essentially an Autocannon (averaging 2 shots) and being able to take so many negates the Ork's issues with ballistic skill. Take three units of 10, and you'll annihilate anything from front armour 10/11.

I think they're good, but a LITTLE bit overhyped. Still can't take down anything better than AV13, and even that only through glances.
And my Orks can generally take light armour down well enough without them. Still, quite useful against light armor, monstrous creatures, and terminators.

QFT, For AV 14 you need to bring out nobz with PKs to do any reliable damage. Tank Bustas are tactically bad & Zzap guns / Kannons are generally ineffective.

I'd say that for FA13 as well. Sure you can glance it to death, but it's still not something I'd want to try.

Monstrous creatures, though.... my Lootaz eat my regular Nid opponent's deathstar and Trygons alive.
And the CSM player I play against regularly loves to field lots of Rhinos. My Wagons have his Land Raider covered, but his Rhinos cannot hide from my Lootaz.
Bottom line? I love Lootaz.

Personally I love Stormboyz, but I admit they're sub-par as far as cost to effectiveness ratio.
I suppose I don't see that many nids here, the biggest use I see for them is shooting down terminators.
You know, the old adage of "force them to roll enough save and they'll fail some of them". Lootaboyz can force a LOT of saves.

I love my Lootas as for some reason my opponents see them as a higher threat and concentrate so much firepower to take them out allowing my boyz and Nobz to get across and get stuck in. I am adding a third squad and putting them in a BW to give them mobility.

You may want to rethink that. Heavy weapons and mobility don't exactly mesh well.

I concur. However, putting lootas in an open topped BW, and leaving the BW stationary makes them very difficult to shift.

Given the prevalence of SW razor-spam and mech-IG, my lootas work overtime, locally.
I do love to throw them in a BW and attach a KFF mek. A 95-point wagon with KFF is a tough nut to crack.

How good are Lootas?
I think they're one of the most mentioned units in the "Beat This Unit" thread, with good reason too...
|
Also littlenibbler Orks aren't about armour saves.
Orks are about having too many models on the table, and wasting the other guy's time with your movement phase.
Orks are about having the toughest units on the table.
Orks are about not caring about how many bodies are left in a long winding trail until the squad is down to less than a third its starting strength.
Orks are about rolling more dice then you can count without the aid of a calculator or a pen and paper.
Orks are about having totally fething insane characters tearing gak down like Doc Grotsnik, Ghazghkull or Snikrot.
Orks are about being too fething awesome to die...

Think of them as between 15 and 45 autocannon shots that get an extra 12" range.
That's frightening.

I've had very little luck with them on many outings. It all depends on how many shots you roll. Since I've rolled well below average on # of shots, they're just a giant point sink. I suspect they've made their last appearance in my army during a tournament this weekend.
If you're capable of rolling average or above... I think they're a great investment. I'm done with them though.

If you think your important, in the great scheme of things. Do the water test.
Put your hands in a bucket of warm water,
then pull them out fast. The size of the hole shows how important you are.
I think we should roll some dice, to see if we should roll some dice, To decide if all this dice rolling is good for the game.

I DID! My new dakka dice roll legendarily well. Everyone comments on it. But when I roll for the # of shots for my lootas... epic failure. Two units of lootas must have shot over 20 times in my 4 games on Saturday and I rolled a 3 once... ONCE! Most of the other rolls were ones, though there were a fair amount of 2s.

The loota fill such a big hole in the ork codex, with so many conversion possibilitys, they amazing. The hole they fill (ranged anti light transport) is so needed in the ork book. For the heavy stuff we always rely on the pks and rollas but the fact that we can open light transports like rhinos and razorbacks before our troops get there so they can assault is invaluable, as opposed to charging the tank, destroying it and having whats inside deal some major damage back.
I run units in 5, I never seem to need more maybe it's just my luck but no rhino nor dreadnought is safe from them (well ok, exclude ironclad).

When the ork book first came out, the first unit I noticed I had to get was lootas. Keep in mind, my first army was orks, and I had started to collect the minis just before the new book hit. So I had no idea was good and not good. But d3 S7 shots with that range was something I KNEW I had to have. So I got two big units and never looked back. The people in my area thought they would suck, being 6+ save and as expensive as a marine. Then they got hit by what they had to offer, and they changed their tune.
That being said, they do have some issues. First, they are part of the reason why building ork armies is so difficult. They fill the elite slot, which competes with half of the best units in the book (burnas, kommandos, and nobs, the other half being wagons, kans, and koptas). 3 amazing units, that demand to be spammed, all in the same slot. Ugh. Second issue is they are such a massive threat, that they attract lots of enemy attention. Attention they can't really take. Then their is their random nature, BS2 is a crap shoot, and their volume is one too. Lastly is their points cost. At 15 points, they can be a sizable investment.
I usually just bring 2 units, run the nobs as troops, and use the last elite slot as burnas or kommandos. Which in itself is an agonizing choice.
