First off let me say that I have searched the tutorials and the painting and modeling section for this answer and have had no luck. If this questions has been asked before, please direct me to the answer and delete the thread.

I would like to make my Cadian IG look dirty. They are a army that spends it time in the bowels of a hive hunting for Genestealers. Here is what they look like now.

I really like the painting style that FW uses on thier Death Corp of Krieg.

However the brown color would not really work since my guard don't slog around in the mud as much as slog around in broken down habs.

Any tips would be appreciated.

welll. it depends on what kind of debries you invision them as slogging around in. Not mud then what. dusty? I always see the underhives as being pretty mucky places so i would add some highlights to their boots and their elbows and knees like they have been crawling around. Some browns and then lighter browns and greys.

If you WANT to go for the mud, I just posted a tutorial over here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/30/317624.page

I don't know if it fits the blueish look of your minis.

Actually...the brown would work quite well, even if it's "broken down habs" in the middle of a Hive City. Accumulated dust, dirt, etc would cling on their uniforms and be raised up by their passage. The uniforms of US troops in WWII, operating in cities in Germany of all places would be covered in a fine brown/gray layer during extended operations just from the dirt and dust kicked up from destroyed buildings and the operation of armored vehicles in the area.

So yeah. You may want to look at Forge World/whoever's weathering powders, and try mixing some "Light Earth" with a color like "Grey Ash" and make a combined dirt/dust mixture to apply liberally.

Could the look be achieved using dry brushing techniques as well? I have not decided how to base them yet. I was thinking a dry brush of Codex grey with a light highligt of Frotress Gray with some Bestial or darker brown "splashed" on. Thanks for the great responses! Holy crap are those DCoK awesome!

Drybrushing doesn't really "pop" with Guardsmen.

The cloth parts don't lend themselves to the technique. If I get one of my Sentinels done soon, I'll post and give you an example.

Well, I have to agree that dirty look does not really go well with blue uniforms. Normally blue is saved for navy and garrison uniforms which are normally not dirty. However, I use devlin mud to make everything darker and dirtier than dry brushing. Dry brushing kommando khaki on blue just only looks like it was on the very edge of some one base coating some minis.

Washes also don't do "dirt" too well. They just darken or lighten up a color.

To give an example:

This isn't done by washes, y'know. It's powders applied in layers.

i use a "Pollyscale" paint called aged concrete. you get your brush really really wet and just take little daps of the concrete, it then runs along th edges of your model. when it dries it looks like dust piles from the desert.

When you settle on a color, try using a sponge to apply it. The sponge in a blister pack works great.

I've got a couple of the Tamiya Weathing sets, kinda look like a box of eyeshadow, and even include the little spong applicator the women get too.

Set D i think it is, cost me about £7 or so, but it'll last forever I reckon, has a metallic blue, bronze and oil stain colours. The oil stain works for everything, be it some really dark brown mud, or scorch marks on the end of a flamer. Could look into try one out maybe.

There's a couple of ways you could do weathering and grime on your Guardsmen. Drybrushing does, in fact, work well with Cadians, just as long as its a Drybrush and not an Overbrush. I do an armour chipping technique using a sponge (free pimp for the blog! http://smellslikewargaming.blogspot.com/2010/08/tutorial-battle-damage.html)
As for the urban look, the blue is interesting, but I don't think it works as a whole, at least in contrast to their Lasguns.
Urban camo would work a little better if it was a darker Grey, complimented with white and black. As for the lasguns, an extreme highlight of a Navy Blue would work wonders instead of the red! Just my two cents, definitely a good start and I hope my tutorial helps you a little!

MiG pigments do a number of concrete and rubble colours that you could experiment with if you're going for a dry and dusty look. It's something I intend to do with my Guardsmen if I ever get round to finishing them.

Can I suggest skipping forward 10 years to the age where you don't really care about what people say on the internet. Studies show that it decreases your anger about life in general by 37%. - Flashman

Thanks for all the input by all. I am going to try some dry brushing techniques this week and will post results. As to the red lasguns, They are troops from a PDF regiment that have been drafted into Inquisitio service. I was trying to make something about them seem more Inquisitioneee. I agree with you however, I think I will repaint the lasguns.

If you want something to make them look more Inquisitorial, try to nab a decal sheet from the Sisters of Battle vehicle sets.

Or try freehanding a small =I= on their shoulderpads somewhere.
