Models with Heavy Weapons (excluding blasts) may choose to fire in continuous, suppressive fire mode instead of their normal shooting attacks. The rules for firing in this mode are as follows:
Tight Pattern: Heavy Weapons with 2 or less shots are not capable of cutting off large areas. To represent this they may only lay down suppressive fire via a small blast template placed anywhere within the weapon's firing range. Each enemy unit passing through this area suffers d3 shooting attacks resolved via the weapons shooting profile. Each blast from the firing unit must be in contact or overlapping another blast from it's own unit.
Large Pattern: Heavy Weapons with 3 or more shots are capable of cutting off large areas. To represent this they may only lay down suppressive fire via a large blast template placed anywhere within the weapon's firing range. Each enemy unit passing through this area suffers d6 shooting attacks resolved via the weapons shooting profile. Each blast from the firing unit must be in contact or overlapping another blast from it's own unit.
The purpose of suppressive fire is to choke off portions of the map and force your opponent to either move around those areas or suffer the consequences. The blasts are used to represent the area under fire by the weapon.

I don't get it, does it hit each model passing through the blast template, or just once per squad that passes through?
If it's the former, this is totally OP as you'd just drop it in the middle of a squad and get a ton of shots at BS-2. If it's the latter, it seems that you'd be better off just shooting it normally.
Keep in mind Orks only have a BS 2, so there's no difference to them between the small blast and large blast versions.

I would rather just fire my Heavy Bolters. Remember a small blast is quite a small area, and it wouldn't take much for an enemy unit to just walk around it, resulting in a wasted turn of shooting.

It's the latter.

It's the latter and this in addition to firing normally.
So, you want to give a free upgrade to all heavy weapons? I think you need some sort of drawback for this to be feasible. Or else, recost every weapon in the game.

Hi all.
Supression SHOULD be built into the basic ranged weapon effect in the rules.(As most modern rule sets do.)
Trying to bolt them on to a system like 40k is just going to add to the complication with unsatisfactory results.
If you ant a well modern defined intuitive tactical simulation, why are you playing 40k?

Ditto; if you're looking for a system that does suppressive fire well, check out Fast and Dirty.
