Clearly these folks have never heard of /b/.

The BBC wrote: Internet 'in running' for Nobel Peace Prize

The internet is among a record 237 individuals and organisations nominated for this year's Nobel Peace Prize.

The number of nominations surpasses last year's record of 205 nominations.

The internet's nomination has been championed by the Italian version of Wired magazine for helping advance "dialogue, debate and consensus".

The director of the Nobel Institute, Geir Lundestad, told BBC News that the organisation had received "thousands of nominations" for the coveted prize.

"Some were nominated by one person, others by 10, others by 100," he said.

The secretive organisation does not release the list of nominees, but nominators sometimes announce their choices.

The nomination for the internet is supported by 2003 Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi and the founder of the $100 laptop project Nicholas Negroponte.

Nominations can be put forward by former laureates, members of national governments and select university professors, among others.

Others on the shortlist are thought to include Russian human rights activist Svetlana Gannushkina and Chinese activist Liu Xiaobo.

The final list was decided by the Norwegian Nobel Committee - which has responsibility for the Peace Prize - at its first meeting of the year on 9 March, where the five-member panel was able to add its own nominations.

"The announcement of this year's laureate will be made on the 8 October," Mr Lundestad said. "The prize amount is very likely be the same as in recent years."

Last year's 10m Swedish kronor ($1.4m) prize was awarded to US President Barack Obama.

It is unclear who would accept the prize if the internet were to win.

Internet for Peace, set up to help support the nomination of the internet, says the prize would be "a Nobel for each and every one of us".

Sorry for the formatting, the Beeb isn't the best in that regard.

So, Dakka, does the internet deserve the prize? Discuss.

I suppose if one has never read a discussion on the internet that it might seem like a uniting influence.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

No, I don't think so. To give the internet the prize would devalue the exceptional work done by individual prize winners. Sure the internet has some good stuff on it, but it is mostly trash. Giving someone a prize for advancing the internet in a positive direction would be better, I think.
A nobel for each and every one of us rings hollow for me, because the prize is supposed to honour the exceptional.

Well, they gave the peace prize to the founding member of a terrorist organization and a Presidential candidate who hadn't actually done anything yet. Why not? Next year they should give it to MS13 for their "efforts to bring peace and order to Northern Mexico."

gak they should give me a nomination at least then. The super awesome way I can sleep 3 or 4 hours, wake up before the son, get my kids up, fix breakfast, make sure my son has his school work all finshed, then take him to the bus stop should fetch me one. At least I do something. Obama was just blackish

The man has a few more achievements than that, to be fair. None worthy of a nobel prize in my view.

The idea of the internet getting a prize is pretty stupid though.

I think they should give the prize to Moot out of 4Chan.

He is clearly the most forward thinking member of our modern cyber-society.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Think of it this way:
how crappy would it be to get nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, and get beat by the internet? I feel sorry for all the other nominees if the internet wins.

Moot's still probably more deserving of it than half the people who've gotten it in the last two decades.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

It still wouldnt be as bad as how Gore won his. Because of his stupid global warming thing, he won over a woman that saved hundreds of Jews from concentration camps during WW2. Yea. Global warming. Manbearpig. Super hero. Beat a woman that did THAT during Nazi rule. Nice

Also I wasnt exactly saying Obama hasnt done anything worth noting. I mean he IS the president after all. Out of all the billions of Americans from the beginning to now can say they have done that? Im bad at math, but even I know thats going to be ALOT of .0s before you figure it out

tl;dr your thread. Not relevant to my interests.

Also, that's silly. The interent is obviously a combined effort of millions of people. You can't give it to some scientists, because they haven't made it what it is...You should give it to everyone

and then they take thier vitriolic, ignorant views to other places where people do go (Youtube, and all targets of /b/'s DDoS attacks). Having given these people a place to communicate with each other, thier rubbish is spreading to other areas of society when they decide to do something 'for the lulz'. I'm not saying project Chanology is a bad thing, as well as a few other, more harmless things, but tbh, the whole attitude of the /b/ board is frankly disturbing. However, having said that, this isn't a thread for discussing /b/. That would require a new thread that would only get locked.

Also, that's silly. The interent is obviously a combined effort of millions of people. You can't give it to some scientists, because they haven't made it what it is...You should give it to everyone
I agree with this, although I would laugh so much if the internet did win, and then a group of anons turned up in masks to collect the prize, and then left without saying a word.

Although, the internet will probably be sentient in a few years anyway, so I suppose an effort to appease it now is a good idea .

The Nobel Prize(s) have been devaluing themselves for decades. This isn't really that drastic of a step

I am however curious exactly how the internet would accept the prize. Would they just haul in a data server and insert a disk labeled Nobel Prize into the disk drive, or do they still use floppies?

Frazzled, you have already demonstrated in the past that you possess no real understanding of Arafat's political ideals. The actions of an associated organisation are irrelevant in the context of his nomination. I suppose Jefferson Davis was the founding member of a terrorist organisation too, defending state interests and all that.

So when is the Telephone getting the prize for providing communication between people over long distances? He did it before the internet who pretty much stole Telephone's stuff to get started.

That guy isn't such a jerk as the internet. Don't they have a rule about giving out the award to inanimate objects. The internet shouldn't really count. At best it's like giving your self an award of awesomeness because you felt like it one day.

It should go to either the people who invented it or to people who used it to better the world, not the tool.

I disagree. The Peace prize is pretty much a joke at this point but the rest are still giving them to people who have actually done something and even better done something in the area the award is meant for.
