Subject: T-wolf calvary base sizes...

Rotting Sorcerer of Nurgle

Howdy all,
So soon I want to start building my Space Wolves army. One of the key elements to that army is going to be a squad of T-wolf calvary.
My question is, what is typically the "used" base size for these?
Being calvary I would assume biker/calvary bases would be used... but checking around online I find a LOT of people use 60MM MC bases. Some even use the 40MM teminator bases... so it kind of seems people use whatever they feel would suit them.
My buddy built his using dark elf cold ones and space marines... but they looked awkward to me. I'm thinking of buying the new bloodcrusher boxes and converting from there... I'm not too sure either way tho.
Any suggestions/tips/help would be awesome

From what I recall most folks I have seen put them on oval (or rectangle) bases--bike sized not Valk. A friend has them on calvary bases, and has never had issues. Editing to add: I asked my friend just now and he said he thinks most folks use the round termy sized bases, though Canis comes on the larger one even. /shrug

Yep, 60mm works best and that is what Canis comes with.

60mm, use the only other Thunderwolf as a basis for how to base.
There are a couple of examples of Thunderwolves here.

there is no officially correct answer. some people say use bike/cavalry bases since they're a cavalry unit type while others say use 60mm since the only official thunderwolf is mounted on one (as are the most similar unit in 40k, the bloodcrushers/juggernauts of khorne). personally, i'd say go with the 60mm. out of 4 people that i've seen use TWC (including myself), we've all used them.

So its up in the air....
The reason I'm wary of using Canis as a reference (besides a terrible model) is because his T-wolf is supposed to be the "biggest and bestest". So I would assume T-wolves would be smaller to some degree....

It doesn't matter really. RaW you can't use TWC anyway, so just do what you feel looks good and don't worry about it!

while i see where you're coming from, "biggest and bestest" rarely equates to a bigger base size in 40k. arjac rockfist and sergeant harker are described as giants among men in their respective armies, yet they have the same base size as everyone else in their respective unit type (terminator and IG infantry respectively). abaddon is usually pictured as towering over others due to his horus clone possible heritage ("little horus") but is still on a standard base for any chaos terminator. i honestly can't think of an example where something of the same species/unit is actually mounted on a bigger base just because the fluff says they're bigger than the normal specimens.

I would tell you, but I get banned every time I do tell someone. I'll let someone else take that bullet tyvm! So, general consensus then: 25mm = BAD BAD! Here is a fire please go dive in it etc. etc. 40mm = Eh... Maybe. 60mm = Fine and Dandy. 120mm = Whut? Cav/Bike Base = Acceptable... maybe.

Is it the whole, models must be glued to the bases theyre supplied with, as there are no models no abses are supplied so the twc cant be mounted on bases thus making them illegal for 40k use? or something like that anyways ....
lol.

The rules actually state that models can be mounted on any sized base (that's larger than the one they're supplied with). However you must clear it with your opponent to do so.
Also, In Fantasy the Gigantic Spider ridden by the Goblin Lord is quite a bit larger than the giant ones used by the Spider Riders. Orks are also described as getting bigger as they fight more, and indeed Nobz are quite a bit bigger than the Boyz, and the Warboss a considerable amount larger than the Nobz. The scale issue only applies to Humans actually, since Space Marines are described as 7 feet tall (the average human is only 6). Arjac doesnt have an official model either, and Harker is larger than a human (although not by much). However he is very toned for a guardsman.

Yeah funnily enough one can do anything in a game of " 40k" if you 'clear it' with your opponent. TMIR iirc.
More than a few of us here are really more concerned with the rule s and being able to play a game of 40k within this 'rules-set' and not having o sit down, take out th note pad, and ask each other if that shade of green is really valid for a salamader list - or to be less straw man, having someone call over TO and say you're playing an illegal list with your Eldar because a couple of grenades you didn't know about weren't in the box..... or any of the other ridiculous situations which arise when two people both agree to play " 40k" not some game bed off it but we changed the bits hat we didn't like and couldn't decipher correctly.
So yes, you can do ANYTHING if your opponent agrees, but they can also go find a game with someone who wants to play " 40k" not some thing that.... yeah and this is where it degenerates ^_^

I am a Maxmini fan but those wolves are horrendous! Oh and 60mm is standard expectation. The blood crushers and Canis are the reason for this non-obligatory consensus.

I always imagined them as on cavalry bases. Bloodcrushers seem to be a tad bit small for their bases (although I do agree they'd be oversized on anything below 60mm).
