Picked up a Razorback for my Deserty Marines today. It's going to tote around my 6 man HQ unit. I've only got the stock box so it's lascannons or heavy bolters (lascannon), but what about the other options - the storm bolter and hunter killer? Are either of those worth their points?

Generally, since the Razorback is so easily killed I would say not likely for the storm bolter and only take the hunter killer if you have the extra points. It can make its points or whiff entirely.

But, the Storm Bolter is nice as you will always be able to fire it as its a defensive weapon (str 4) so if you ever need to move 12'' you can still get a couple of shots off. If you've got an extra 10 points I'd say go for it depending on how you plan on using it.

Arent Vehicle Storm Bolters like double that or so? Thats quite a bit of points for a mobile storm bolter/extra wound for weapon destroyed

There's pretty much no point buying a Storm Bolter for a Razorback, unless you are running Heavy Bolters (which you should avoid unless you completely run out of points) all the other weapons are far more likely to be shooting at vehicles or other targets which the Storm Bolter can't touch. The Hunter Killer is usable, they are helpful for getting more first turn firepower into a list, but it isn't really worth it unless you run multiple Razorbacks with them.

The place you should be focusing on for Razorback upgrades is the main weaponry. Heavy Bolters are a waste as mentioned, T/L Lascannons are ok but the best two options imo are the T/L Plasma + Lascannon (for a standoff fire support unit) or T/L Assault Cannons (for an aggressive unit, works well with BA due to added speed making up for range). Getting Assault Cannons can be tricky but its pretty easy to convert the T/L Lascannons into a Las/Plas if you can find a could of spare plasmaguns, I believe there is a guide on Dakka somewhere on how to do it.

You are correct, I apologize. 10 pts if you are using codex marines. I had been playing Dark Angels earlier today who have them for 5.

Should I bother with Extra Armor? It is my command squad.

EDIT: Nevermind, it doesn't actually improve your armor - no idea why I thought it did.

I actually prefer to just keep Heavy Bolters on mine. I don't like the idea of throwing too many points at AV 11 when it's main job is to get shot. Since this is going to be for your HQ choice, I recommend options like dozer blade and extra armor to get that command squad where it needs to be.

Las/Plas is usually the most common and useful variant, and is easily modeled by chopping off one of the las cannon barrels and gluing on two regular plasma guns (chop the handles and things off) in it's place.

Las/Plas costs the same as T/L Las, and trades the ability to reroll 33% of your las shots for a T/L Plasma gun. It also lets you survive an extra weapon destroyed result, as you can choose to lose either the Las or the Plas (The C:SM FAQ specifically says this). Thus, Las/Plas is almost always worth it.

As others have said, Storm Bolters and HKs are rarely worth it, unless you can't find anything else to put the points on, or are doing some kind of crazy alpha strike list where you put HKs on everything.

EA is very useful on transports as it insures you can at least keep moving. it doesn't help the weapon on the roof, but it can keep the squad inside alive by moving out of danger.

Two builds I find work really well LasCannon and plasma gun or Assault cannon.

Assault cannon is a no brain Drive fast till you’re in range and then drop the unit and fire at anything in range.

Las-Plas is a little bit hard to use but well worth it basic job is to move with a walking force (dreads and other move and shoot) and act as a heavy weapon. If something like threatening comes along it can sit still and fire every thing at it.

Just remember that one of anything dies quickly you really want a pair or more... and for the love of god don't take a HK thats 10pts you could spend better.

At the moment it's modeled with TL Las, but I keep the turrets so that I can swap them out. I'm going to see about gathering bitz for a Las/Plas. When did that weapon come into the game for the Razorback? Seems like an odd combo - a heavy weapon and an infantry rapid fire weapon.

I'll see about EA, but since it's already primed I'm not going to be able to model it on there for a while (back in the day my IG improved armor was thin wire made to look like bed springs, a la German tank divisions in WW2).

Dozer blades worth it? I -do- typically use a lot of terrain (or at least try to), but I will admit it has always looked silly to have a 40k vehicle dozer blading it's way through a forest in any amount of time.

Picking up a Baal assault cannon on ebay is a good conversion source for that option.

... do you have more then one razorback? no then i think its fine to say it has extra armour: if you had two one with one without, then you'd need to make it clear which was which.

Dozer blade are worth adding if you've nothing betting to spend the points on or you know you'll be driving through terrain. Otherwise its not likely to come up. As for the trees ... well

... now beef that up to 4 times the size >_<

You shouldn't kit one razorback differently than the rest of your razor backs that's just making it an obvious target. It's already an obvious target with your HQ inside you don't need to slap a las cannon on top of it when the rest of your army is in rhinos or naked razors or your opponent will almost certainly shoot it up the first turn he can. If you kit out all your razors the same then picking out which one to shoot isn't as obvious and leaves more room for you opponent to make mistakes. I for one use las/plas razor backs and love the extra transport/MC/elite infantry killing power they bring to the table. If the rest of your army is in rhinos i would recommend just sticking them in a rhino too. No point in spending points on a fire magnet. I take hunter killers only when I take alot of vehicles for a huge turn one alpha strike. I wouldn't recommend spending the points unless you have 6+ vehicles that can take them. If your looking to fill the last 10 or 20 points in a list I'd rather just upgrade a tac squad sergeant with a combi-weapon.
