Originally this was going to be a thread asking about the Salamander things, because they look cool. Then I realized they were 100 points. Then I got wondering about the IA series as a whole. I know a few things have been reprinted into regular Codices in this and 4th edition, things that back then were generally considered the most useful. What about the rest of the stuff? Do things like the Salamander actually have much place outside of "story scenarios"?

I'm assuming you mean the IG Salamander Scout? It gets you a relatively cheap mobile Autocannon I guess but has been somewhat superseeded by the (cheap and far more common) Chimera. Quite a few of the older IA units have been left behind due to the new IG codex and edition changes. I believe there are some rumours floating round that they might be updating the rules from the older books to bring them in to line with the 5th edition codices though.
In any case the main issue with IA is actually getting it on the table. Most tournaments don't allow it as its not a GW codex (despite some things being pointless or outdated there are some absolutely broken units in there as well) and many people would have issues with IA in pickup games (same reasons as above + they are completely unknown units for most people). As you suggested, most IA is limited to being used in scenarios or Apocalypse games.

Generally most IA stuff is "put on the safer end" i think. They rather have something cool but not too good/powerful vs something very effective. Although there are some really powerful options out there such as pre 5th edition heavy mortars, now updated and nerfed. Sallies dont look too promising mainly becuase they have to compete with valks to take fast attack slots. If you want to be fluffy, go for it but its very lightly armed so its basically like a faster sentinel with 2 guns. I think the tauros may be a bit better but do not know if they can be used outside of elysians

It would be nice if they could switch to plastic kits, but they probably don't have the production capacity. I'd love to do a PDF style force with Malcador tanks, but at 75 quid each I can't justify it.

If they made plastic elysians, death korps, and renegades, I think people would buy those in a heart beat! But the modelers would not like the loss of details.
