So i have a space marine army. Its a fairly good sized army with 3,500 points. Made up mostly of tactical sqauds and vanguard veterans.
Now, i've always thought fluff was a very important and i recently hit a block when I was trying to determine my chapters fluff. So please, everyone feel free to help me create some fluff for my chapter.
Here is a list of things i already have and ideas i like.
1. Chapter name is Imperial Crusaders
2. I like the whole warrior cult theme like B.T.
3. I'm not very fond of vehicles (although i do have land raiders for my HQ units.)
4. I like the idea of a lost company of marines returning home centuries later and have formed their own chapter
5. I like fighting orks
Here are some pics,

Every heretic that is crushed under our feet will be a testament to our undying loyalty to the citizens of Imperial Space. We will baptize ourselves in fire and emerge as the most steadfast defenders of humanity.” - qoute from my own homegrown chapter

I really like the whole BT thing like a crusade full of warriors and all they do is kill things. however, i want my chapter to have more class
Now as for the student-master thing, i dont really have any idea of what you're talking about? you'll have to explain that to me.

Well, I think the most important part of a custom chapter is that it plays to its fluff. It's great you are going to make a full background for your chapter but most times when you play games it's much easier to say, "My Chapter is X which is based on X. That's why I take the following units and play like X". People will get your army quicker and you'll likely enjoy playing them a great deal more.
So foot marines = Space Wolves. They simply excel at it like no other chapter.
Secondly, you are interested in master-student concept.
Again, Space Wolves. They have Wolf Guard which lead their Grey Hunter packs....and that easily translates into Knight classes (For example, check out the Wiki on the Teutonic Knight order system);
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teutonic_Knights
This will allow you some modeling opportunities for your Knight Leaders (Specific coat of arms, etc).
Just some thoughts...

I like the lost in the warp aspect Collector. As for the whole Blood Angels thing, i was leaning towards using a lost Black Templar crusade fleet, mostly because a crusade fleet is 1,000 marines strong. So my chapter could virtually start out at almost chapter strength. I do like the Space Wolf warrior culture, but i lean towards the Black Templars because crusading knights are just Bada*s.
Automatically Appended Next Post: I want a dark undertone for my chapter too, but i cant decide what i want it to be. Like the whole Blood Angels have the red Thirst or The Dark Angels have a dark secret.
If it helps, i really like the whole Iron Snake squad composition like, the squad name is named after the first sergeant to ever lead that squad.

Squad Marticus hurried up the hillside, there wasn't a moment to lose. "Squad Marticus, form up on me!" Sergeant Jenova yelled, he was franticly trying to work a strategy on beating Waaagh! Sergeant Marticus didn't respond, but swiftly brought up his bolter, and in two quick burst an Ork cannon came tumbling down the hill. Brother Silihus took it as a signal, "Squad Marticus, Charge!"

Word bearers are a legion remember?
It could just be a really zealous chapter with Chaplains instead of sergeants. As there are about 100 sergeants so if they wre all chaplains it would just be about double the number of chaplains as a normal chapter.

I think the "deep dark secret" is that they, even though everyone thinks their primarch is the one for the BTs, and it is actually the primarch of the Angry Marines!
But seriously, it should be that they... oh... are slightly tainted by Khorne from being in the warp. Or something.

Indeed, unfortunately there is no loyalist equivalent.
As for it being "weird": The Blood Ravens kind of already have something similar, that is... most of their sergeants have psychic abilities. They may not be fully-fledged Librarians but it's an example of a Chapter "hero" being used as a Sergeant.
Iffy fluff though.

Okay, here is the start of my fluff using the context of what you set forth- Imperial Crusaders- the brave Space Marine chapter whispered of vanished thousands of years prior in a desperate struggle to surive amidst a rampaging ork horde. Long lost Second Founding scions of the Black Templars, returned from the torrid warp storm that hurtled their fleet into the vagaries of time and space, find themselves stranded in the 41st millenium amidst a changed Imperium. Worse, their mortal enemies the Blackburn Orks that ravaged their home planet and hunted their tattered fleet into the warp storm also survived their tumultuous journey. Led by the aronistic and sadistic Warboss Gragz Grisslefist, their immense space hulk Mork's Flamin' Gits serves as their mobile base of operations as they descend upon the unsuspecting worlds now caught in the ork leader's ancient quest for dominion and conquest. The tattered remains of the Imperial Crusaders, the one hundred survivors that comprise their 1st Company, crown their new High Marshal from the one remaining leader of their ranks- Marshal Brans Heindalf. Holding the bloodied power sword of the former High Marshal who entrusted the ancient relic known as Foebreaker to Heindalf, the new leader of the chapter made a grim decision in his fight against the orks who were not only doggedly pursing them but also killing billions of Imperial citizens in an orgy of violence. He choose to flee, and in running away, rebuild to oppose the might of the bloody and power mad Grisslefist. However, he also decided he would not leave. His fleet, much reduced in size and lacking in vehicles, would skirt the edges of the expanding Blackburn empire. From there, High Marshal Heindalf would oppose any straggling orks he could find, keeping them from intercepting the survivors who manage to escape the ork marauders. And from the survivors, Heindalf drew the reserves that would rebuild his chapter. Amongst the tattered fleets of refugees, he found not a few who were simply timid and scared Imperial citizens running for their lives, but soldiers and desperados who engaged in a running battle against incessant ork attacks. These men burned with the passion for revenge and hatred of the orks. These cinders of pain and loss Heindalf nurtured and turned into the roaring inferno of sharp precision and destruction that are space marines. After several years of hit and run tactics, setting up temporary base camps to train the new recruits, and blunting the expansion of the Blackburn orks- High Marshal Brans Heindalf stood upon the ragged and war torn world of Culler's Peak, inspecting the ten Marshals that followed in his footsteps and the nearly thousand warriors who comprised his reforged Imperial Crusaders. Lightning cackled around the mountains behind him. Beyond him was the ravaged land of the world, scoured by the orks and incinerated by their reckless abandon. The smoke of their fires blackened the sky further. Here the Imperial Crusaders launched their assault, from the mountains they boiled forth, a wave of righteous might that would engulf and drown the flames of war started by their enemies.

Why can no custom chapters just be a normal chapter who have had ups and downs but usually come ou on top, they have participated in all the historic battle such as the 3rd war for armagedon and the 13th black crusade but more or less not anything of massive importance. Maybe a few ork invasions, the odd splinter fleet or dark eldar raiding party maybe even a few traitor regiments of IG.
