Hi guys,
I've been working on an army builder for iPad with a friend of mine and it's coming along ok so far (see attached image).
We're starting to ask the question, should we try and sell it, and for how much? I mean, we'd almost certainly have to go get a license agreement from GW and who knows what that will cost.
Is there a lot of you out there that would be willing to support an app like this? (right now it's focus is model->unit->army construction and analysis, not so much tableside play, though we have a lot of ideas for that too)
Love to talk about where our own priorities are for the app, but am thinking that we should start asking a wider community for what we really want from a tool like this, and whether or not we can make a living with it
PS No Eldar Support. On Principle.

AHem... Excuuuuuse me, but Army Builder©™©™©™©™©™™©™™© is a Trademark of Lone Wolf©©©©™©™©™™©™©©™. The correct term is Generic Wargaming Roster Generation Program. That being said, meh, I detest Apple anything, and if I were going to use it, I would use Wine with Army Bulder©©©™©™™©™©™©©™™©™©™©™©©™™©™©™©™™™™™™™™™™™™™™™™™™™™™™™™™™™™™ (which I do on Linux just fine atm).

lol Thanks for the correction, Gwar. An "Army Roster Management Utility" it is. On the naming front, we were actually considering something along the lines of "Adjutant," intending to capture more of the assistant meme.
No quarrel with the Wine-on-Linux crowd, apart from the fact that after all that technical hoop-jumping, you've managed to land yourself in front of 1997's hottest user experience. I assure you that my distaste for The Original Authentic Army Builder™ goes well beyond its Windows-only tether..

It would be nice to see / have, I can't see it selling for more than 9.99 for all armies. Or you could make it easier to code and do individual armies at like $.99 giving people a reason to purchase a the full one.
It would need to be iPhone compatible as well to make any money off of it. There are to few ipads to iphones to make it worth while atm. Maybe a light version w/ out pictures, and maybe the the base codex for free.
Looks like your using Filemaker as the background engine?
I hate Army Builder, their licensing schema is worse than Micro$ofts.
Now I just use a spread sheet, another member here on daka pointed me to and they are great imo.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do |

Actually El-dred it's all native/local. We are looking at some integration with a web endpoint allowing us to send a link to someone (not using the ipad, for instance) to view the army, but we're not tied to a Filemaker installation or anything.
Though looking at their 'Go' iPad bridge, I can see how our UI evokes some of the Filemaker forms.
Thanks for the pricing feedback. We have talked about (and like!) the idea of offering the app and codices separately as in-app purchases, and I think it might make a lot easier pitch to GW down the road. It might also be better for the gamer as we could piecemeal our costs to fit our army/interests..

Wow that looks really promising, and certainly has a lot of potential.
But, I would definitely get in contact with GW about it, especially if you are going to be asking for money for it, otherwise they will come down on you like a giant sack of gak.

Personally I won't get it since I don't have an Ipad or Iphone. HOWEVER, it is a great Idea, but GW would probably want you to have people fork over the money for a new dex+the amount for the ap since its basically having the dex inside it.

I fear that this program won't last long at all in the Apple App Store if contains GW's copyrighted army list information. And Heaven help you if you don't own the rights to all of the images in the app, because the agreement to distribute the app in the store requires you to have the distribution rights for any images and sounds in the application.
Otherwise, it's certainly a very nice screen shot.
Edit: Oops, I skimmed over the part where the OP already mentioned realizing the need for licensing with GW. Good luck!

Apple directly rejected my same application (although laid out more for the Touch and Iphone.
Beautiful work though. Objective C isn't the friendliest of languages. I think if most people knew what it takes to build something along these lines they would fork over $20 easy.
Designing something like this for the PC is easy. Doing it for an apple product not so much.

If you gave me the option of inserting my own pictures, yes
If I had some stock photos, no
I normally detest apple products, but i'm typing this on my wife's imac and i play games on her iphone and my father highly recommends his ipad...
Long story short i'll probably be getting I something as a gift and if i could get a warhammer list generator for it it would raise it's usefulness for me considerably!
I could see it being 9.99-19.99. but if i had to shell out a buck for every new codex, you'd never even sell me the app to begin with. I would just go back to using army builder on my laptop (even though it's annoying to take to games)

Ibodger for Warmachine works well on the iPhone. Take a look at that, you could do a more concise version of what you're planning for the smaller device.
