I'm starting this P&M blog mostly out of motivational reasons, i.e. I lack quite a bit of it. Hopefully, if people find my work enjoyable, then maybe I'll feel obliged to keep painting.
My army has gone through two separate colour schemes (Black Templars and Crescent Guard, by Dakka-user migsula) and is now in on it's third. The thing with the previous ones is that I can't pull them off correctly. Blue, on the other hand, is a colour that lies close to my heart and is easier to work with.
I haven't thought too much about fluff. What I know is that they're supposed to be a fleet-based chapter with a specialization in boarding actions and CC overall (going to be using Codex: BT). Instead of being a chapter full of fiery zealots, I imagine them being stoic and dour in nature. I am very welcoming of all contributions to fluff, if you've got any.
PICTURES!
They are actually a bit more greenish in hue, but I'm not a good photographer. This is all I have for now, but more will follow in due time. As you see some details, like the lenses, aren't painted yet. My hands were quite shaky today while I was painting, so I didn't do them.
The right shoulder is reserved for personal heraldry. Every marine will have a unique right shoulder. I hope this will give the army more character, as well as giving me an excuse to use more crazy colours on my limited palette. In the above posted example I'm using yellow, but I will be using all sorts of colours and patterns.
Please, comment!

I like the look of them , and your background fluff is engaging stour stalwart seasoned veterans of risky boarding actions, used to living in cramped confines of tiny boarding crafts. maybe you could add more character of their boarding actions to the models, , extra pressurised suits , extended helmets more tubes, back up respirators plasma cutters , magnetic boots, thermal detaonators, custom bases that look like space ship interiors, krack grenades and so fourth . wonder what a depressurised space marine looks like?
its hard to be motivated i know, but dakka is a wonderfull place if you put the effort in! He looks a bit generic at the moment but i do like your coulr scheme , should paint in the eyes when you get chance as i find this really makes a model. try to get into the charcater of your men a bit more , think like they do , imagine the positions they would get into a little background story can do wonders for the identity and customisation of an army i find.
regards and nice work.

Haha, one comment in like 60 views. It's something, I guess.
Yes, I know it looks extremely generic right now. That model is from a crusader squad I assembled about 10 years ago (age 13). I do believe though that a power armour already is pressurized (or can be emergency prezzurized), but I could be wrong though. Furthermore, I believe that the boots have magnetic capabilities as well. Will take notice on the grenades and stuff however. Lenses are going to be painted, I just suffered from shaky hands yesterday. But I know, it really brings life to a model.
I was wondering about how to base them since I've never based my models before (heresy), but it would look cool with a lot of tiles, railings, tubes and grating on the bases. Either that or just generic rocks and sand, because the army is going to be deployed ground side with tanks and stuff. How the hell do you use a Predator in a boarding action? xD
The overall look on the models will be very 'Templar-y', i.e. tabards (reserved for more elite models though), chains (bound to their duty etc) and lanterns (carrying the light of the Emperor through the dark void).

I like them, may I suggest a light green or dark blue for the eyes?
How do you plan on basing them?

I was actually going for red, but green could work. My only concern is that their armour is quite turquoise to begin with (essentially blue/green), so blue or green lenses might not provide enough 'pop'.
wizard12 wrote:How do you plan on basing them?
Not sure. Either just stones, gravel and grass or based on ship interiors, as neil101 suggested.

I really, really like those!
Youve been very adventurous with your blue and it looks great. Great control in keeping the blue and white individual, and a nice overall softness in the end product. As you say, your hand may have been a bit shaky but I can see your not finished yet like with the lenses and stuff. What colour are you going to do them?
The heraldry part is really cool, but you should maybe consider keeping similar colours to certain squads to stop it looking too random? Maybe Im just too OCD lol.
Keep them comming!

Ha, that's the way it goes... Most people are lurkers, and it takes some time to write a decent answer (ie. other than "OMG Awesome"), so you just have to keep on & hope for small details that will catch the Dakkaites' attentions...
When dealing with MEQs, which are quite common, I have noticed that it's either fluff or a thorough customization of each & every Marine that gets the most feedback...
Anyway, neil101's constructive answer, IMHO was well worth a fistful of "Great!" & "Awesome, bro!" answers. Of course these are really nice to hear (and I'm guilty of such answers more than I'd like to admit ), but they don't add much to our modelling approach, which I think is why Dakka exists!
So, yes, one comment IS something.
Inanimate wrote:I do believe though that a power armour already is pressurized (or can be emergency prezzurized), but I could be wrong though.
Yes, they are supposed to be completely sealed, from the Mk II onwards. I'll try to find a link... Ah, here it is, not the official WD article, but seems like a copy-paste to me : http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Power_Armour
You might also find some additional equipment featured in the armours...
But as I said earlier, I think neil101's answer is really good, for the point isn't really in saying "well, they already have that!", for obviously, power armours already feature built-in vast amounts of options (medicae, sensors, comm devices, etc..).
But modelling some additional details would help in making them stand out from the "vanilla" Space Marines!
For instance, even though Space Marine boots are already heavy & the whole armour is stabilized, these Devastators (top left & top right) have additional trims on their boots, supposedly for added stability when firing heavy weapons. Did Space Marine Devastators really need them? NO! Does it make them look nicer & more tailored to their task of dealing death from afar? Definitely yes!
This example came to me, as the words "magnetic boots" made these models spring to my mind!!
Inanimate wrote:I was wondering about how to base them since I've never based my models before (heresy), but it would look cool with a lot of tiles, railings, tubes and grating on the bases.
For the bases, a firm called Micro Arts Studios has a great range of resin bases :
http://www.shop.microartstudio.com/power-plant-c-3_59.html
http://www.shop.microartstudio.com/biotech-bases-c-3_60.html
http://www.shop.microartstudio.com/tech-c-3_26.html
It might help!
As for a personal comment :
I love the paint scheme, quite uncommon, and I like the idea of a individual "heraldry" on each right shoulder pad...
What I especially like are the colours, and the armour that looks dented & dirty in a quite realistic way...
Your pics aren't that bad, and we can see a lot of details on them, but I think you should also include a pic taken from a bit more afar, to give the "overall" feeling of the mini... (No, it doesn't work if I do get my self 3 metres from my screen )
Last word: post some more pics!

Wow lots of replies now! Yggdrasil's answer as well as being very nice to me ;-) is bang on exactly what i was suggesting with the magnetic boots and extra pressurised suits! and what Ydrassil said about fuff and converting is especially true for me! although a fair amount of people really respect a very good paintjob. your model has a great paintjob , better than what i could do. thats why i didnt really give any painting tips, but as i said before your marine fluff and colour scheme are great , go the extra mile and make the army stand out from every other generic sm force! with your painting skills i doubt it will be very hard.

I love the combination of colors on these guys, especially the white parts and how they look weathered and battered with another method other than Tin Bitz added. I'm building my own White Scars and I'm looking for interesting ways to have white armor look damaged.
How did you achieve that weathered look? Drybrushing? Or a light wash? Or something else?
Keep it up; I look forward to seeing more pics!

All right, people like my stuff! More pictures will come around next week sometime. I'm a bit busy right now with mid-terms and stuff, so you'll just have to be patient. After that my painting will probably speed up quite a bit.
Thanks for the info, Yggdrasil. I'm liking those bases. And about the boots, maybe I'll add some rivets and things like that to make them look more 'stompy'.
Calvinus:
It's just a white helmet with a watered down wash of Devlan Mud (use your fingers to wipe off some of the excess). If you want to accentuate the shadows more, add some undiluted Devlan directly in to the areas that need more depth. I have basically been copying the style of Sons of Orar (the user), so I suggest you have a look at his work and tutorials. He's way better than me and has more work available for viewing.
As a final note, you will see some more conversions. I recently bought a box of assault Terminators, and I'm going to add tabards to them and use the knight helmets found on the BT-conversion sprues instead of the original ones. Some greenstuff-details will also be added. Just don't expect miracles or anything.

Haven't been able to get much done since last time, unfortunately. Between school and other events last week I found I didn't have much time left over. Anyway, I'm just going to post some progress pics and let you know I'm still alive and painting.
The guy in the middle is the one in my original post (with painted lenses!!! more detailed look in my avatar to the left). I have also basecoated and painted the armour Hawk Turquoise on the remaining 7 marines in the squad, no pic though. I had to upload this one on Imageshack, because when I tried to upload the picture here on Dakka, all the colours were wrong. My marines looked more like Crimson Fists for some reason. :S
This is one of my CC Termies. If you wonder what the hell I've done to the legs, I can tell you it's supposed to be reactive additional armour. The armour is in practice a bunch of kickass capacitors. When a (conductive) projectile penetrates the additional armour, it closes a circuit. A massive current surges through the projectile, instantly vaporizing it into a cloud of plasma. In cases when the projectile isn't completely vaporized, the shards are hurled towards the enemy. In the confines of a ships corridors, these shards can prove to be lethal.

I hadn't even noticed that until Rose_Mountainz pointed it out!!!
It looks really natural, & the helmet adds a lot to it!
I also like the idea behind the reactive armour, it's very fluffy...
As for ship-fighting armour, you should read on again the MkIII description (found at lexicanum, as per the link I posted above), it was designed with that purpose in mind!!!
