Ironic that you should post this MGS considering it was the Labour party that swamped the country with bloody foreigners. If the old school Tories that i vote for had their way, they wouldnt let any in, we would still be birching people, and hanging would still be legal!
On a serious note, its a non story isnt it? There is a relatively large Muslim population, and Mighty Mo is up at the top for baby names because unlike us, Muslims all give their kids the same stupid bloody name due to their respect for their ridiculous desert fable largery plagerised from the bible.
They make up.. what? 5% of the country?
Its no big deal.
Although being a right leaning Afghanistan/Iraq veteran with no love for Islam i wish it was a big deal.. but it isnt.

No offence, but you call your newborn boys Butch and Tracy...
Also, nice soundbite matty, but I was unaware I stated this as a problem rather than just something of note as a mark of our cultural change... Well, your cultural change, I'm off to live in the USofA very soon now...
Perhaps you can get your nice American lady a scarf for Christmas, to keep her hair warm in the chill winter air.

About 1.8% as of the last census in 2001.
Your core point is true, of course, naming your boy Mohammed as a muslim is like Roman Catholics in South America naming their boys Jesus Maria.

Now they get lame names like Trevor and Hunter. You think a Trevor's got your back in a bar fight?

Ivan is russian for John.... damned crazy russians.
The reason 'common' engish names are dropping off is that none of the bogans/chavs/trailer park trash can spell them correctly, which is why instead of Georgia you see:
Georga
Georgah
Georgyah
Georja
Georjah
Georjya
Jorjah
Jorgah
etc, etc...

I'm pretty sure all actual discourse that can take place in this thread has already. I've always thought Ultrabass was the coolest name possible for a child. I don't really understand why cultures mixing would threaten anyone to begin with though. I don't mind seeing more Joses pop up because it makes peoples name easier to remember. Once place I worked had six Jorges ( hor hay, not george).

Wait 'til the Muslims start mixing with the chavs. Then you'll get Mo'hymid, Myhymyd, Mohaymed...

The only real cultural change shown by this report is not that muslims or muslim culture is becoming more prevailant (not even 5% of the county's population), but that parents are deciding not to choose from the 'old' list of names and becoming more 'creative' (or just hate their child and want to get them bullied).
as for oliver, i have never personally met an oliver so it can't be that common, but i have a pretty common name.

Bluntman's got an excellent point. There are two factors at work here- 1. that you've got a growing segment of the population that favors one particular name, and 2. That the much larger majority increasingly goes in for a wide variety of names, meaning the old favorite names aren't used so heavily as before.

Because, as people have said, that small percentage of the population uses that one name for boys almost all the time. Whereas there's hundreds of names given to non-muslim kids.
