Might want to be a bit less vague there, Feforfar.

Somewhere in south-central England.

Do you mean colours that were available as clothes dyes and paints in the ancient/mediaeval eras?

Current research is showing that the ancients tended toward primary colors. This photos are "restorations" of what the sculptures would have looked like when first painted.

I was going to say "ancient colors" are the paint pots you'll find in my collection...

Never seen those, and why you say that?

It was intended to be humorous. Those are very old (i.e. "ancient") Citadel paints that I still have in my collection.

Ancient colours would have typically been tones available from materials directly derived from items that give a died effect, obviously your khaki's and browns ranging from scouring and tanning of leather, various tones of reds even ranging up to brighter tones, colours werent terribly difficult to create even in the greek/roman era, and the thought of limited palette tones is something that actually wasn't as limited as we think back then, Personally if you want to convey an air of "ancient" about your models i think it will be done more by the medium in which you use, try using some weathering styles with your colours?

And of course, remember that purple was exclusively the domain of the wealthy nobility.
