Hi! I just got back from my season opener weekend (firearms-deer), where I got my first one (a seven pointer!). Are there any other hunters on Dakka? Gun nuts? Anyone?

I don't hunt, though my father and brother do.

I have always been able to find more enjoyable things to do on a weekend that don't involve freezing my fat a$$ off in a tree stand while thinking about how much I have to pee.

I have however been drafted into skinning and processing a deer before (3 of them actually) and it was a less than entertaining experience. seriously pulling the hide off of a 3 frozen deer carcasses takes effing hours at the end of which your hands are numb from cold while the rest of you is covered in sweat and your back feeling like it belongs to an eighty year old man.

I don't hunt deer, just because I have no desire to deal with it after I shoot it.

Birds on the other hand, like Pheasants and Grouse, I love to hunt. They're way more fun the way they pop up out of the bushes and fly between the trees. Much more interactive than, well, pretty much what Ma55ter_fett described.

Hunting season starts next weekend for gun. Never got out for bow season this year... just too much going on (too many damn figures to paint). Looks like there's a decent enough buck on the property so we'll see what the season brings this year.

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

When I was younger and lived in a rural area I was the terror of rabbits for miles around. My dad was a trapper and handed all of his illegal steel-jaw traps down to me, and most nights I'd place them out in the hills.

I only used air-rifles on 'em as far as firearms go, but even half-pumped the shot was enough to stun them long enough to run down. Younger rabbits I could quite easily run down - my dog knew to go after the big one as I caught the little beggars.

When I was first taught to break a bunny's neck I closed my eyes, applied the technique... And tore its head off. Then I freaked out a bit... but that was over fifteen years ago.

My Brother and I went hunting with our Uncles quite a bit when we were younger, sort of a requirement in my family that all the men know how to hunt and fish.

Haven't done it in some years now,but we still target shoot whenever we get together.

I'm one. Large and small game.

My career in the Air Force has really hampered my ability to hunt though. I've made one deer season in the last 9 years. Spent a whole month in the woods last year, and only saw 5 deer.

Two does during Bow season. I took a shot at one of them, but she was to far away. During rifle, I saw a doe and her fawn. Walked out of the tree line 5 feet from me. They never had a clue I was there. The county I was in didn't have doe tags for rifle, so even if I was inclined to shoot at a doe with her fawn, I couldn't have.

We have just the opposite problem. You have to shoot a doe up here before you can shoot a buck... so no doe... no go.

In your base, ignoring your logic.

I've been dove hunting, 20 years old and just started hunting. It was terrible though, I got two that landed in the middle of a small lake behind me.

I liked it except for the fact that I couldn't recover the birds.

In Michigan, you can take a Doe or Buck during bow season. But during rifle it can only be a Buck without a specific doe tag. A decade ago, it wasn't to hard to get one, but with the spread of Bovine TB and other diseases the deer pop's been hit pretty bad, so they severely cut back on doe tags. The county I hunt in doesn't even offer any tags for public land.

I hunt, but haven't been for about 2 years or so. Last time I went was for bow opener for deer in California. My dad and I went, and saw one buck the first day we got to our campsite. The rest of the place was overrun and overhunted with those going for rifle.

Please ignore the trolls, they have no idea of the challenge that faces a human hunting a wild animal.

We've done a fair lot of duck/pheasant/goose in the past.

My parents moved up to Central Washington about 2 years ago and I have really been wanting to go with my dad. His neighbor just got a very large Elk about a month ago.

I hunt, it's been awhile since I've done it though, same goes for fishing.

However, last thing I shot was a ten-point buck.

Where I live, down here in South Texas, we use everything. I had it dressed out, got all the meat, European Mounted the deer skull. The skin goes to local taxidermists or leather workers.

Just thought I'd say that sitting up in the stand is my favorite part of it. Quiet space for me to just think. No noises anywhere, except for some distant gun shots. Then again, I hunt on joint owned land with a mix of carpenters and cops, so our deer stands are quite nice.

I've not hunted in some years, but bully for you OP.
If you plan on eating what you hunt, then good for you. That is key, unless you have an overpopulation issue ( I'm thinking Texans and boars) there is no need to waste.
And yes, there are gun nuts on dakka, 16 firearms and growing. Most of those being WW1-WW2 era stuff.
Heck, that is my avatar, my broken thumb after extracted from the action of an AG-42 Ljungman (bless you swedes, amazing rifles ).

I do plan on going hunting this year, if for no other reason than to show my father up with a 67 year old mauser and make sure his cupboards are stocked, he still tries to live self sufficient.

Living is WI and having never hunted probably makes me a heretic. I almost hit a six pointer with my car last week.

It's more of a case of not arranging an outing with my friends. I want to use my old trapdoor (.50-70 govt) to take one someday. My brother used a Krag his last couple times out.

One day...

I've gone hunting with my dad for a few years, but unfortunately have to miss this season. I've only had any success with grouse, but have tried deer, turkey, and moose as well. We always finds hens or does when we don't have a tag and never find them when we do. We used to use a shotgun, but now we've got a crossbow so no more hunting in snow at least.

Mr. Fastchocolatesurprise brings up a good point: If you're going to hunt, use it! Meat is good, and in the case of deer, hides can be made into clothing or donated to make clothing for the homeless. Do so! (the emperor commands it)

My brother got his hunting liscence a few days ago, he's 14....seems a bit young to me. At least he isn't a punk like other kids his age.

I think Michigan allows it as young as 12 now.

Haven't been hunting since my first child was born. You think 40K is a money sink? Try a kid.

I should start though, plenty of hogs around here but the deer in Florida are hardly worth the bullet meat-wise.
