What Ho!
Mrs Flashman is watching Smallville Series 9 so in the absence of anything good on TV I got nostalgic and went hunting for Rogue Trader on ebay. Surprised to find quite a few copies up for sale with bidding starting from £5.00 to £10.00. Quite set on buying a copy now, but how much do you think I should go up to?
I also found a 1st Edition Warhammer Fantasy Rulebook, but I definitely do not have £100 to spare.

they have lovely pictures in them those - and stacks of fluff - a good read. I say bid 7.99 and go as for as 8.50 - but these things always depend on the size of your pay-check

I just got something vintage from the nineties, it is two Goliath Juves that I have been drooling over for the past almost 3 years. I got it for only six dollars. This is all besides the point, damn my over happy self.
Rogue trader stuff? I'm sure every 40k player wouldn't mind owning a copy. And as weety said, there will be really good fluff within those pages.

I remember my original copy disintergrated and it ended up in the bin. It seemed old hat at the time because 2nd Edition had arrived, but now I miss it. If I remember correctly there are rules for Space Slann in those hallowed pages. It's a tragedy that those were never followed through
Back on topic, think I'll go up to £15.00 depending on the condition of the book.

The -real- tragedy, imho, was the Jokaero. Now those guys were interesting!
Not sure how they would work in the current game yet back then they were really sweet.

The Deldar Archon retinue brings in all sorts of interesting xenos, and provides some hope that similar Inq-style retinues may bring us back glimpses of other fascinating aliens. Betcha two whole internetz that whatever Inquisition codex has the Ordo Xenos will include some of the oldies in the retinues. A Jokaero or Slann would fit in pretty well. And Demiurgs seems almost inevitable.
We're not talking whole lines here, but at least a few really cool models.

£15 seems like a good sum, what with it being the original price when released (or was it £12.50?).
I still have mine and like yours Flash it also fell apart (and got a pot of Chaos Black spilt inside it for good measure!). Hung on to it though, the section on scenario plot lines is worth the price alone.

It's a classic book, go to 20 or even more. If you never read it, or not in a good long while, it's worth that much on nostalgia alone!

Awesome book.
I still dig mine out for a read every now and then - if only they still made deodorants of the right shape to make the speeder featured in the DIY vehicle instructions...
Likewise my 3rd edition WFB book - the paper in this has a very particular smell, which instantly transports me back to adolescence

you need plastic spoons as well...
I have the whole thing scanned into my PC, dont ask why. but in a way it is sad as slinky is right about smell being an important part of nostalgia. But i get that every time I crack open a tub of my 18 year old citadel paint - with the old style snap on lids you have to open them with your teeth or break your nails and get paint all over the place.

Yeah, cool book, still have my original and pull it out now and again. Spines falling apart and there's various notations about extra wargear and range changes for when we played RT with epic scale figures And the first 16 pages were duplicated twice instead of pages 17-32 (shooting and h-t-h combat ) so we had to wing it until someone else got a copy. Didn't want to send it back to exchange it as I didn't want to part with it Good times.

I bought RT and the Compendium and Compilation (red and yellow books) 2 years ago. I think I paid around $15 (USD) for RT in rough condition (I reglued some of the binding sections. Though they were acquired in different lots, I proabably paid around 8 bucks each for the Compendium and Compilation both were in used, but failry good condition. The Compe and Compi are absolutely invaluable for fluff regarding Slaan, Squats, Genestealers cults, etc. I enjoy reading through those books even more than RT.
The most valuable books from that era seem to be the "realms of Chaos" books which were completely cross compatible with Warhammer (supposedly everything in RT was, but...). They fetch a pretty penny, and as such I don't have them.

The second of the two, The Lost and the Damned, is by far the more expensive. It only had one print run whereas the first, Slaves to Darkness, was printed twice.
I've watched The Lost and the Damned go for about £90 in the past.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |

The EM4 cops are pretty authoritarian looking. There's a fellow somewhere who blogged about using the em4/grenadier troopers to make a RT IG force.
I've never tried RT, but I'm drawn more and more toward games that don't focus on massive armies. RT was deffinitely a game designed for much smaller forces on each side than the current edition.

Indeed. In fact, the original book was almost halfway between a wargame and a RPG in some ways.

Yep, imagine having to roll randomly to determine the abilities/stats of many of your units. I can think of no better way to frighten a current edition power-gamer.
RT is not a game initially designed for tournaments, its very RPG/historical-gaming in it's "create a senario and play it out" approach.
