I'm sure if all they had was that they might.. But generally Chaos and Regular space marines stick to there tried and true bolters for there medium range killing needs.

By the time they finish turning them into a space marine they would probably have a proper gun for them (or a CC weapon or heavy weapon). Its not like becoming a space marine is a quick or instant process.

I suppose, if they were out of ammo and it was all they had, and the enemy was too far away to punch, and they had no large rocks lying around to throw, they might resort to a lasgun.

If you've been a '1337' enough cultist to get turned into a Marine, I think you might have been awarded a bolter, or some kind of actually decent weapon between joining up and then....

This is a good example of why CSM do not use lasguns.

or if there were not enough cultist, or other space marine to throw at the enemy, or (Insert everything weaker than your run of the mill CSM then go up as he goes up in rank), or their bolter have been thrown at the enemy

If they ran out of ammo they would deffinetly use a lasgun, they make sturdy clubs... oh, and they make good flashlights too.

The SW in the last Ragnar Blackmane book run out of ammo and some start using Hellguns... I know it's not CSM but still.

They used to have cultists that used them, but that was only Alpha Legion.

If they can supply a full suit of power armor, they can supply a bolter, even for a new marine.

There probably aren't even bolters or lasguns big enough to be used by giant marine hands.

For quick, brutal battles, yes. For extended campaigns... no.

The logistics of supplying usable bolter shells for an extended campaign is a nightmare.

Multi-lasers and the appropriate book and author. Hur Hur Hur.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

I suppose the could, but they'd have to be special extra-large and sturdy lasguns / autoguns so they don't get crushed by the Marines. I remember one recent Marine short story, they were besieged and low on bolt shells after months of fighting. There were lots of lasguns around but they couldn't use them cause when they tried to grip the handle they crushed them like tissue paper. I doubt they could even fit a finger into the trigger guard.

In deathwatch it suggests that they have to do special modifications such as removing the trigger guard.

I think that Marines would only use Marine scale lasguns/autoguns due the fact that human scale weapons have too small handles.
Besides Marines do not fight in extended campaigns, their job is to launch lighting fast raids or to decapitate enemy leadership.

Ideally, yes.

That doesn't stop crappy BL books from making them do it.

...urrrr... I dunno

Well, even so, most CSM can produce/force someone else to produce/loot/beg for ammo anyway, so they never seem to run out. The Iron Warriors probably have production facilities to make sure this never happens, if no-one else.

In all fairness SM sometimes get forced into situations that are beyond their control.
Having their homeworld attacked would mean they need to defend it often over a long period of time as well.

Iron Warriors fight in extended campaigns because they control Forge Worlds and can make as many damn bolts as they need.

... you mean as many bolts as they have the resources to make.

Bolter shells aren't made of the same thing the average autogun bullet is made of.

In a dire enough situation maybe but most likely i could see a CSM bringing his fist to bare before grabbing a lasgun if he lost his weapon in combat.
