I have notice quite a bit that a few folks here and there on Dakka are under the impression that Orks are a 4th ed codex, While I have only been playing since Christmas I was under the impression that they were 5th ed. that made me start thing, Is there a clear cut way to tell if a Codex is 5th over 4th?
To my knowledge(Which I could be Wrong, Again still somewhat new) these are the current 5th ed codexes

Ork
Blood Angels
Tyranids
Space Marine
Space Wolves
Dark Eldar

Also I would love to hear folks opinion on the current 5th stuff, what was a good codex, what was a bad one. Anything that you would have like changed just a little.

It's very confusing for the newcomer because IIRC there isn't anything explicitly written in the codex that describes what version of the rules it pertains to, mainly because GW want new rules to be 'backwards compatible' with codices that haven't yet been updated.

Out of the list you posted, Ork codex was written when the last edition of rules was out and hasn't yet been updated to the new set. Other codices include Eldar, DA, Chaos. Tau, Witch hunters and Necron (correct me if I am wrong - can't think of any others off the top of my head).

You can always check the copyright... anything before 2008 is for either 4th edition or 3rd edition. They are still perfectly serviceable, but tend to be overcosted.

Sunblitz Brotherhood: 2000 points (a very nice gift) W:0 L:5 D:0
Amarie's Vertigo Tribe: 1500 points W:5 L:5 D:0

I've been playing Warhammer 40,000 since 1988, and am just coming back from a bit of a 10-year hiatus. And please excuse any wild accusations, hallucinations, or outright factual errors, as I am recovering from a serious head injury. And Warhammer 40,000 is part of my therapy. OH YEAH!

Unfortunately my little brother wont even let me so much as glance at the cover of his IG codex, but I better get to a store and get checking those copyright dates! Yeah they can work but man is it a challenge, lowered cost would definately be good.

By the strict release dates, Space Marine, Tyranids, Imperial Guard, Space Wolves, Blood Angels, and Dark Eldar are the only 5th ed codexes.

Orks and the two Chaos Codexes were written with the 5th edition in mind, Orks especially since it's book almost coincided with the release of 5th Edition. However technically they're all 4th edition codexes. Eldar and Dark Angels are also sometimes confused due to their style (done in the same way as the majority of both "official" and "unofficial" 5th ed codexes with the bestiary section and army list section, and the removal of the generic armoury). They, however, do not have much in terms of references to the 5th edition rules at all (unlike the Chaos and Ork Codexes, where rules like Eternal Warrior and Assault vehicle are explicitly mentioned and given a way to use them before the update came).

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.
