Subject: Space Wolf and RT Crimson Fists army projects!
|
 |
Dakka Veteran
|
Hi everyone!
OK, so this all started as an Space wolves blog but have since evolved to also include my Rogue Trader Crimson Fists (and have briefly been visited by a small portion of my Khador force)! You are always more than welcome to leave comments about my work, your input will make me a better painter/modeler/gamer so please, don't be shy !
I have been playing WH40k since like 94-95 (from the days of the 2nd ed.) and have been playing Space Wolves basically since day one. My first choice was actually Dark Angels but the LGS didn't have the "Codex Angels Of Death" so when a friend offered me to buy Codex Space Wolves after explaining what these armored puppies were all about I was instantly hooked! But even though I've been playing SW since, I've never got myself an army. One reason is that me and my friends have almost always proxed our armies as well as my WFB Orcs swallowed all my money...
As for the Crimson Fists its more about pure nostalgia, kind of, and perhaps unnecessary to state but the epithet "Rogue Trader" only concerns the aesthetics. I always loved the cover of the 2nd ed rulebook as well as beaky marines and have secretly been craving for an all beaky CF army since that day when I first layer my eyes on that 2nd ed rulebook (well something down that path anyway )! But I've never been into playing vanilla marines until the last and the current Codexes came out. So, what's the project all about then? Well it's about beaky galore for starters, its also a way for me to learn how to paint before I move on to my SWs ('cause I want them puppies to look real dandy). All those Rogue Trader p&m blogs have also had an impact on me (like Gitspittas Mantis Warrior log or Weetyskemian44s RT galore log) and they have really opened my eyes for the RT minis! And lastly because it would be fun to play something different from SWs (but not that differen! ).
Whats in store then? Well I aim to build an 1500-2000pts SW-army and there will be a mix of both old and new stuff modelwise. The army will be somewhat mechanized and it will be built somewhat along these lines:
- Wolf Lord on thunderwolf
- 4 Thunderwolf Riders
- 30 Grey Hunters + 3 Rhinos
- 2 Vindicators
- 1 Predator
- 6-12 Long Fangs
- 2-3 Razorbacks
And as for the CFs my intention was to start with a 500pts kind of basic VSM army and move out from there. But my collection have grown quite a lot since I've started this project. My collection have probably reached 2000+ pts (haven't bothered to count them) by now.
Now I got some:
40+ marines (10 of which will be converted into Stern Guards)
5 Scouts
10 Terminators (5 W TH& SS)
5 Rhinos (plus two who will be converted into Vindicators somehow)
2 Predators
1 LR
5 Attack Bikes
3 Land Speeders
2 Dreads
7 Jetbikes (will be used as bikes)
Plus some HQ-choices and whatnot
Everything are either slowly being painted or in different states of restoration so to speak.
What was going to be my first 500 pts (a list which Stormcallers and Looks Infected) helped me to figure out) will still serve as some sort of template for my future army and consists of the following:
Librarian -100
avenger, null zone
10 man tac -230
flamer
ML
sarge w/ PF
Rhino
Scout Squad - 85
4 snipers
ML
Dakka Pred -85
And before I start, I'm not saying I'm a master on everything else but my real Achilles' heel Is my painting skills and I've never been good at it, so be heeded!
I've had these old metal Blood Claws for over a decade so i thought they might have earned their way into the Grey Hunters. You will also find some old Wolf Guards there whom will now serve as Grey Hunters.
This is a quick paint test (I can do better than this) just to try out the colors, there will be chipping and other effects on the minis which I paint for real.

Thanks guys!
I really liked the result of combing old and new stuff, the rest of the army will however be made out of mostly new stuff.
We'll see about the painting, I sure hope to improve my skills anyhow.
And, QOrbin, now you know how the army looks like that will crush yours :-).

Hi!
Thanks everyone! Shockwave I don't want to be disappointing you but there is less than a slim chance that I will have a fully painted army next time we meet, but one can always hope...
But OK, a minor update here, another Grey Hunter, My Predator (without turret and side sponsons i might add) with some blingbling and a set of legs which i would like some feedback on since I'm not sure I got the pose right (there will be some GS-work etc. later on but i guess you guys figure that).

Hi again, time for a new update!
Heh, Tobber1202 funny you mentioned billions of termies, my 2nd ed army list consisted of nothing but termies (except a predator annihilator), all with assault cannons. But to be honest it got boring after a while, no one could beat me.
Thanks Rose_Mountainz, I hope I won't let you down, but I have warned ya!
Ok, back to the update. You will see my progress on my legs for the 13th Gray hunter plus the torso that will go with it. There will also be Grayhunter number 14 and 15 (yay, nearly half way with the GHs), both with MotW. And last but not least, three Long Fangs (1 sgt and 2 troopers).
Also, i have ordered parts for two rhinos/razorbacks, spare sponsons and turret for my predator and magnets so I'll soon have all the tanks that I need.

Thanks guys!
I'm pretty satisfied with the legs, there are still some work to done and then there is the rest, hehe.
About the painting, that will happen as soon as I got everything assembled, or close to everything anyway. I haven't really figured out how to do with the thunderwolves though. My first thought was to convert juggernauts but that would be kinda time-consuming and boring. But then I found a set of really awesome wolves on http://www.masq-mini.de/, they are somewhat expensive but then again, juggernauts won't be very cheap either. Well we'll see. Anyway, so for those who are waiting for some painting, it could take a while before I start. But I might change my mind.
Shockwave, I'm really exited about those pictures!

Hi!
I'm not dead but I suspect my camera is! I will get some new batteries today to see if that's the problem...
Anyway that haven't stopped me from continuing my work. I have been focusing on my long fangs. I have finished one squad and are working on my second. At the moment I'm making missile launcher backpacks using a press-mold.
So hopefully I'll have a working camera today or tomorrow and will be able to make a new update!

Hi again!
Thanks for all feedback, if you there is something you think that I should improve, don't hesitate to say so!
My camera is alive and kicking! Now I know why you shouldn't buy cheap rechargeable batteries, their "lifespan" are obviously a fraction of the more expensive ones and they aren't that cheap (not in Sweden anyhow).
As I mentioned in my last post I have been working on my Long Fangs but as I began to work on LF 8/12 I realized that I was running out of backpacks! So I began an avid search for bitz, ebay (as always) seemed to be the best solution to my problem, a quite expensive one though, approx. 5£/backpack!!! (w. missile launcher) and I needed 4 (=20£ +p&p). The price got me thinking of mixing models with backpacks and models without, so I went to coolmini for some reference pictures. And there I stumbled on this great article on how to make press-molds, I thought "why not", and gave it a try. It was really easy and the casts actually turned out quite nicely. I guess there are better ways of casting and it does require a whole lot of GS (or whatever epoxyputting you are using) and I wouldn't use a press-mold for parts with too much fine details, or too small pars. At the moment I'm making a press-mold for that little robot arm on the side of the backpack which is kinda small, so we'll see how that turns out. Anyone interested will find the article on: http://www.coolminiornot.com/articles/1739-making-a-green-stuff-press-mold
Other than that, I have decided on which wolves to use as my thunder wolves, I found these awesome looking wolves on http://www.masq-mini.de/! They are darn expensive though, 99 euro for 5 wolves, but I believe they are worth every cent. I will have to wait until January to get them though, with Christmas coming up and all...
What about PICTURES!!! Some might say and yes here they are. For today you are going to see four new LFs (1 sgt and three troopers), my press-mold and three casts (two roughly cleaned up and one fresh from the mold).
The mold and some casts, the pic ain't that great and maybe I should have displayed the original as reference now when I thing about it...
LF 4
LF 5 & 6 (as i took the picture i realized that one is missing a shoulder pad, and yes it will get one)
LF pack 1
LF 7 sgt 2, I'm not so sure about this one... Suggestions appreciated. (It will get another base)
To bee continued...

It's looking very good. I have a suggestion about the sgt 2, the pointing arm looks nice but maybe give him another head, on thats screaming, and maybe a bionicle in the other. This give him pose that he found a target and screams where it is.

Thank's Mr.Malevolent! I do try to avoid a standard look with the standard poses and so on (not saying I'm unique in any way), and I'm actually quite pleased myself.
I see what you mean Q0rbin and I actually thought about giving sgt 2 a screaming head. But I want my long fangs to give an impression of being these grumpy old men who seen it all and have the nerves to be calm and methodical in any situation, hence no screaming head. But maybe that head and that pose makes it looks just looks strange...
