I see no one posted anything like this, so curious as to how Dakka feels. Multiple choice seems fairest but try to keep it to one or two.

I'm playing 40k for the next 48 hours or so at a friends place. Perhaps the best thanksgiving I'll have had in a very long time.

And for the record...I too love pie.

Yes, I'm looking forward to seeing (part of, at least) my family. Yes, I'm stoked for the food. What I'm really looking forward to, though, is the beer. My dad lives all of 10 minutes from High Point Brewery (makers of Rammstein, if you've ever had it), so whenever I visit, we always head over to fill a pair of growlers with the new brew on tap. Makes both eating and catching up all the more pleasant.

Thanksgiving is an American harvest festival, typically celebrated with Turkey, which commemorates the first pilgrims being saved from starving to death by the native americans. That didn't work out for them well, long run. Thinking about it, to be honest, I bet if you're a Cherokee or Sioux descendant, you probably see Thanksgiving as sort of a sad day. It's like Australian "Sorry Day" in total reverse.

2 days before Thanksgiving are the 2 biggest travel days of the year in the US, which is why there are so many travel related entries.

My family came to visit me this year. I'm smoking ribs as we speak (they've been in the smoker since 11am this morning, so about 7 hours now) which will go nicely with the pre-thanksgiving feast, and then will play some 40K with my nephew. My nephew is not very good at 40k so not really even sure how much that counts. Then, we'll all play either Talisman or Last Night on Earth as my sister does the turkey.

I'll be cooking for the family and friends tomorrow, so no time for games, alas. Turkey, cranberry sauce, butterrum yams, green bean cassarole (from scratch, no canned soup for me!), yeast rolls, pie (probably apple), sparkling cider, and fresh lemonade, not to mention the wine and appetizers that need constant maintaining throughout the day. Next to a good thrashing on the 4x6, one of my greatest joys is cooking and baking.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Indeed, it is a feast celebrating the years harvest.

Which makes no sense to my family because the harvest is over in like... June. >.< What we get for having a crop that is picked in late spring to summer depending on the winter.

Looking forward to it. Seeing family from pretty much the whole state and anywhere that has my sister's, mom's, and grandmother's cooking in one place is bound to be great.

Well as i am from denmark we don't got that Holiday. I really don't get it that Holiday actually? What are you celebrating?. But i like the idea to have a giant turkey as we don't eat that bird much here .
But it feels more like your celebrating christmas as those two holidays are so close to each other?.

And another thing. Christmas. If i am not mistaken Americans are celebrating Christmas at the morning while most in europe does it in the evening?. Do you still have a feast at the evening with your family or is it just the that single morning where you eat pancakes and unwrap presents?

But we do celebrate Christmas starting in the morning, and then have a huge lunch.

It celebrates the end of the harvest in some areas, or in mine more like the end of planting, while in others (more universally) it celebrates the survival of the colonists from England through the first winters in the fledgling North American colonies.

Christmas it depends, we tend to have our big dinner on Christmas Eve followed by the morning festivities and a big breakfast. For us we have 4 big meals in a row because we go from place to place, Christmas Eve is the big dinner with the few members of the one side of the family that live down here, breakfast is the immediate family, then everyone goes to the relatives house for a big lunch with the other side (followed by running around and playing with cousins that we don't get to see but a few times a year) then a big dinner. Then we pack up the leftovers and won't have to cook for a week or so.

Thanksgiving is kinda like a mini-Christmas for us minus religious remeberance and gifts.

Come to think of it thanksgiving isn't the only holiday of ours that is considered offensive to another people. When I was deployed to Fallujah, Iraq. I worked along side some british PMC (Aegis Defense if I recall correctly) And they seemed to get annoyed when we invited them over for our 4th of July BBQ. (Yes, it was a warzone, but Marines will still find a way to have a BBQ.) I guess we just offend too many people.

It must be why nobody likes America. (That and our proclivity for sticking our military in other people's business I suppose)

Whilst some Americans can be offensive, your holidays aren't. It is just that they don't exist in other countries.

You don't have Boxing Day. Is that offensive?

You should visit Japan for Christmas. It's quite interesting because they don't have it. It's just another working day.

You forgot about one thing.. FOOTBALL!!!

Love eating until I cant eat anymore, rolling over to the couch like a squig in a cesspit and watching some good ol' american football..ineveitably falling asleep and waking up in time to see the end of the game and being served pie by the women..ahem my fiancee.

Bonus: My New England Patriots get to play on Thanksgiving in Detriot.

Happy Turkey Day!!!

Doesn't AF take about a day to watch a game that should only last an hour and a half?

Really? They weren't just kidding you?

I'm from the UK and always pretend to be offended by the 4th of July celebrations -- lots of comments about the unlawful of overthrow of a legitimate government or how it was the last time America had an honest govt., etc., but it's all for fun.

For all the Americans who don't like turkey, that's because you don't have Boxing Day - the extra day holiday after Christmas Day we have in the UK - turkey sandwiches and Branston Pickle - top notch!

Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving to one and all!

Personally… I like the fact I have four days off to work on my army….
Sure it’s cool my wife and kids are here, but their upstairs and I’m in my “man cave” working on my IG.
Sure… my wife is making a turkey but then I have to go upstairs to eat it…. To bad she won’t deliver…. But then again I would get greasy fingers on my guys….
So I may as well enjoy the family and then slip quietly back down stairs before they notice I’m gone…..
Happy Thanksgiving !!!!!

Wound up going with Last Night on Earth instead of 40K. Went over well.
