Ive noticed a trend in gamesworkshop games that alot of folks tend to expand on whats in the starter sets in order to make collecting an army cheaper and this probelry explains why orks are popular despite the high model count.

So my question is this, What would you like to see in the next 40k starter set? Its a given that one of the forces will be SM but what about the other one?

I would love to see IG included or elder included just for the chance to see these armies on the tabletop more regularly. And in a perfect world in would not include SM at all anything to make those power armoured pansys less common is a good thing.

Damn I cant wait to the GW legal team codex comes out now there is a dex that will conquer all.

Yeah, Guard would be nice, I agree.

Make it two races that aren't friggin' power houses.

Maybe Guard and Dark Eldar?

+1

Being two of the armies I play.
I'm kind of hoping for Adeptus Mechanicus to be implemented though, but really doesn't look like it will happen any time soon.

This is actually a pretty good idea... perhaps have multiple "starter sets" featuring a few different armies.

Couple it with a "release novel" about guard defending a world from deldar pirates, might actually be worth buying!

In the minds of 10 year old new players they aren't. Also in the minds of the GW fluff writers.

Id like to see the next edition of 40k be released as a hardback rule book with templates, dice etc and Battleforce Vouchers! This way you can pick, as an individual, which ever army you want!

Failing that I'd like to see Marines vs Eldar. Marines becasue they could make some awesome generic Terminators (like Space Hulk should have been) and a few plastic Eldar Aspect warriors wouldn't go amiss!

It would probably be more difficult for 40k to leave the super-humbs out because they are the iconic 40k miniature... despite not being a Fantasy player I think it says alot about the game itself and the Old World, that GW can leave human forces out in two different editions. (Orcs/Dwarves to Skaven/High Elves). Or maybe Fantasy Battle humans are just boring!!!

SMs and CSMs
IG and CIG
One other IoM army such as SoB, perhaps a compendium codex including GK, AdMech and SoB.
Orks
Tyranids
Eldar and Dark Eldar
Tau
Necrons

That is 12 armies, which gives six months per army per edition of the rules to update them.

However we all know that it would really be SMs, something else, SMs, something else, SMs, etc. Half the non-SM codexes would not get a look in.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

You need a horde army and an elite army. A good elite army (other than spess mehrens) are Chaos, yet for beginners they may seem daunting to paint, so i think necrons would be cool. For a horde army, uh either guard, tyrannids, demons maybe even elder or dark eldar ( but those two not so much).

I'd dearly love a CSM VS Loyalist Scum set, provided the models are on a "cool" level with IoB and AoBR.

In the Webway.

Well my cheap-model sense tells me i want it to include orks, eldar or nids (or two of those). But I reckon they should theme the box set around an event in the fluff, not a particularly well known one like armegadon but something like the fight between tau and hive fleet gorgon. Tau and nids would be quite a nice match too.

I remember having my introduction fight back in the day. I got to use the Dark Eldar to fight ultramarines. Never looked back .

Or maybe the GW decision makers only have a hard-on for Space Marines and not humans in general.

No Space Marines or Chaos Space Marines (and definitely not both!): Maybe have one CSM to lead a LatD force, but the Marines get enough support without dominating every single starter set ever.

No Necrons or Tyranids: Both armies in the starter set should be suitable as protagonists/villain protagonists. Witless thralls to the C'tan/Hive Mind need not apply.

No Daemons: Despite the shoddiness of GW's take on Chaos during 4th Edition, Daemons in 40k should still be considered four separate but related factions: Khorne, Slaanesh, Tzeentch and Nurgle. Any daemon force is not just specific to one army, but to one quarter of one army.

Almost No Imperial Guard: Like the Daemons, the fact that you'd have to pick a single regiment of many and stick with it is a disadvantage. Exceptions would be an all-Stormtrooper force (suitable for all IG, Daemon Hunters and Witch Hunters) or one of the regiments that have carved out their own niche in the universe (Gaunt's Ghosts or Ciaphas Cain's Valhallan 597th).

Dark Angels, Eldar and Chaos Marines are in huge needs of updates. They're lacking so much right now compared to the other armies. At least Tau and BT have their own playstyles. I didnt count the last remaining 3rd ed codexes since they're pending for a release.

Or maybe they are in huge need of being subsumed into Codex: Space Marines. Not that that's really relevant to the subject of this thread, which is what two armies should come in the starter set.
