Yellow spray primer will do you wonders. Army Painter sells their own expensive version, although it's very temperamental and can cause awful fuzz if not used correctly. Krylon makes a decent yellow primer, and any hardware store would have something akin to it. Buy that and some Ogryn Flesh to wash the entire models with and you can get some decent looking Imperial Fists without too much effort.

Alternately, you can get more control over your scheme if you prime white and work up to Sunburst Yellow or whatever yellow you want. I'd still recommend the wash for the recesses though.

The rarefied atmosphere

Scorched brown base, over a black prime.

Layer of Khemri brown, leaving scorched brown in the recesses.
-great recess

Iyanden Darksun layer, two thinnish ones right over the khemri, leaving scorched recesses.

Iyanden Darksun + White for highlights.

half water half sepia wash. comes out awesome. lot of work though.

btw, the regular line of citadel paints, the yellows are awful.

The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.

I did a full Imperial Fists army.

For example:

That's actually a sorta crap picture, they look nicer in person.

Anyway, one big help is to spray them with the desired basecoat color. I used Tamiya acrylics through an airbrush. Did some mixing to get the desired color, made a big bottle of it so I could keep a consistent color for all the models.

The nice thing about yellow is also the bad thing about yellow. It's very translucent... That's good when you're trying to do feathering/layering/blending, bad when you're trying to basecoat. So get the basecoat on with something that works, either a spray can or an airbrush.

From there you can paint/wash in the lowlights and highlight with the usual GW colors. I did a first stage with GW Golden Yellow and the next with Vallejo Sunblast Yellow.

I should take some more flattering pictures at some point...

I use the reaper paints personally, I like them a bit better than the citadel stuff and especially with the yellows.

For vehicles I have a standard Testor Spray enamel that I like as a nice starter. But for the SM themselves I use 2 coats of palomino gold and 2 coats of sunlight yellow, And I'm done. It takes time still to do a single trooper but it looks real nice when it's finished.

Hiya Blastemplate,

It's dead easy, it just requires a lot of patience Let me expand on my prep

Scorched brown base, over a black prime.
--For this stage I use the vallejo scorched brown (the game colour line is designed to specifically emulate the GW range and they cover better, flow better, have better bottles are cheaper, neal has them at the warstore for cheap).

Layer of Khemri brown, leaving scorched brown in the recesses.
-great recess, the khemri is used as an intermediate layer, don't go all the way to the border of the brown.

Iyanden Darksun layer, two thinnish ones right over the khemri, leaving scorched in recesses.

Iyanden Darksun + White for highlights. this is usually a fifty fifty mix depending on your taste, experiment a bit or do two progressively lighter ones.

half water half sepia wash. comes out awesome. Be sure to watch so it doesn't settle weirdly. you can get an odd dark brown watermark. Still trying to figure this out totally.

The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.

Love the Imperial Fists.

If I had SM's, they would be the ones for me.

One way of getting the yellow is by priming white, then using a number of yellow washes (such as sepia wash) to yellow and darken the original white to give a more "realistic", earthy yellow.

Has the added advantage that it shades and so on the model at the same time

For Yellow using GW paints I've gone with this...

  • White undercoat

  • Iyanden Darksun Base

  • Highlight 1:1 Bleached Bone and Iyanden Darksun

  • Wash with Ogryn Flesh

  • Wash With Gryphonne Sepia

  • Highlight 1:1 Bleached Bone and Iyanden Darksun

  • More Bleached Bone as necessary

  • I know he isn't an Imperial Fist but just to give you an idea of the yellow colour.
