Ok guys this thread is not a speculation thread on what happened but having just finished first heretic pg 295 gives more insight into the fate of the 'forgotten legions'. The HH series has been gradually increasing the information we have on these legions. Do you Dakka the great multiheaded beast of misdirection and contradictory opinion think that at some point we are going to discover exactly what happened to them from one or other of the protagonists point of view?

No. To put it simply people like a mystery. GW knows that and so I can't see them telling us any time soon. Lets face it, after all this time people will expect something amazing in term of fluff-and no matter what GW do they won't please everyone, or will make a horrid job of it. Plus they most likely don't even know themselves what happened to them. That way the authors of the HH novels can write whatever they want in terms of clues, even if they are contradictory and it won't matter.
Plus, what good is a mystery that everyone knows the answer too? Although we all want to know, its the speculating and attempt to peice things together from clues that people seem to enjoy most

Dan Abnett has specifically stated that the two "Lost Legions" are beyond a shadow of a doubt intentionally left open for players to make their own Legions with. So my guess is no, they will never be "revealed."

I think they may address what happened to them, but I do not think they will ever detail who they were.
One is Forgotten, the other is Purged, if I remember the references correctly.
They will most certainly get into describing the "reinforcements" that the Ultramarines got.

Which is funny, because whenever someone on dakka (usually new members) tries to make a chapter claiming it to be comprised of survivors or the decedents of one of the “lost legions” they are usually shot down.

I could see them revealing full details on the lost legions if the Horus Heresy series starts to lose steam or even to build more momentum for the series. Would be a perfect way to get books moving off the shelves if they were to reveal that big mystery.
I'd really like them to fill out that little bit of fluff personally. In all my 15ish years of GW, I've honestly have never personally met someone that created an army based on the lost legions, so leaving them open for hobbyists to create their own is kind of redundant since everyone can create their own Loyalist Marine or Renegade Marine Chapter.
Just reveal their origins, their flaw, how they were purged/exiled/imprisoned and move on with the Heresy. The WH30-40k galaxy has plenty more room for new mysteries and revelations.

personally i believe all GW will ever do is hint at them, such as in some of the HH series, they will never confirm or deny them in canon for the simple reason is that they were left blank to allow players to create their own founding chapters/legions and decide whether they turned or not, the reason they have been mentioned but unrevealed in the HH series is that it would be a very big and obvious elephant in the room to leave them unmentioned at all.

They are doing a good job at the moment in the HH series of tiptoeing around the lost legions. There seem to be suspicions that the size of the ultramarines is thanks to a big influx of 1 or both of the legions marines. The primarchs all took a vow not to talk about their lost brothers.
I hope it doesnt get any more revealed than it has already.

I like the way they are going about it, but some of the revelations in the Horus Heresy series might be a step to far, especially those in First Heretic. I think it's good that they are acknowledging them and there existence, I just hope they keep them lost.

I second this, I expect they will describe what happened to them over the course of the HH series but in no great detail. They will enough blank however to still allow players to make their own.
For one thing, the large support for creating your own chapter means that there is less need for 'blank' Legions IMHO.
I really approve of what they are doing with them at the moment and those of use following the HH series love it.

I actually DO believe that eventaully GW/ BL WILL reveal all about the two Lost Legions.
We've already gone from "Nothing will be told. Ever." to rather interesting BIG bits being revealed in the HH series.
GW will soon realize that we really do want to know, officially, what happened AND that they'll make a LOT of money in the process of telling us.
Well, more than by NOT telling us.
And...

it would be nice if GW put paid to the Survivability question.
if they said they were Destroyed utterly, Primarch killed, Gene records lost with them, lost in a wormhole....
it would save us the pain of reading every Noob's fluff how his chapter is one of the Lost Legions.
i know it's there for this thing, but no one ever does a good job of the fluff.

There's plenty left unanswered but hinted at, but left open for players to interperate themselves.
The fate of Ahra, the father of the Scorpions.
The fate of some of the Primarchs, who just up and disappeared.
The origin of the Tyranid race.
The whereabouts of two of the C'Tan.
Cyphers ultimate goal and the origin of the sword he carries.
There's plenty more. It's more interesting when GW give some hints (especially contradictory hints) and let us speculate ourselves. It also leaves it up to players to make answers themselves in story based campaigns, though I'm guessing by now not many players like doing this.

Of those who want the life, times, and down fall of the 2nd and 11th legions described (and I know I do!) would anyone be opposed to a "mini series" of books dedicated to them? I mean, lets say a 6 book story arc detailing everything from the unification wars on Terra, the creation of the Primarchs, pre-primarch legions (that is the names duties and styles of the legions before they were re-united with their primarchs), and of course the full reveal on the two lost legions.
As a note, I think rolling the two lost legions into the Ultra marines was the best thing possible: because so many chapters descend from the Ultramarines, it means that a number of chapters likely descend straight from the lost legions themselves. So it preserves that lens for creativity of crafting home brew chapters descended from those legions under the crux of being funneled through the Ultras.
And being three legions in one might suitably account for why the Ultras are the best at everything

I'm selfishly hoping that I get two things, even if everything else about what happened is a complete bloody wool-pull
1) The Legion's Names
2) Some Colour Schemes
That's all i'm asking for! i don't care what happened! the world won't explode and the fabric of time will remain intact! just put some names and colours to them and all the nerdrage on "the intarwebs" will subside! Automatically Appended Next Post: Just watched that black library vid where he says that they deliberately kept it secret so the players have room to work with it. problem with that is:
Only the most retardedly noob chapter stories are based around the lost legions. it's a truly definitive way to have people point and laugh at you. that said, GW & BL, please if nothing else give us names so the ridicule subsides!

I think they will during the course of the HH, but only indirectly as oppossed to a dedicated novel.
So far there have been major revelations in the HH series, and it seems like the writers are being given free reign, as long as the story and idea is good enough.
