Okay, as some of you may know I am going to make a heresy-era raven guard army based around the BA codex. The genetic fault will be the black rage, honour guard will be sanguinary guard, and the "monsters" will be the death company. The problem is, I want a LR achilles for my raven guard too. but the achilles isn't available for BA. So what should I do?
I need to know by mid-december.

Go for Blood Angels, I've got a hunch that there's more than one player out there that isn't interested in trying to kill the Behemoth that is a Land Raider Achilles...

You'll probably have issues with people not wanting to play against the Achilles, I'd just go for the BA.

You don't get why armies like Eldar, Dark Eldar and Orks cry cheese when there's something that's going to take silly amounts of effort to kill that could potentialy be SCORING? Sure, the Orks have Deffrollas, but still, it just isn't a fair vehicle.

but yeah, for x'mas I'm gonna get C:BA, a unit of sanguinary guard and a RG upgrade set, so the S.Guard have beakie helmets, torsos with the raven on, and Raven guard shoulderpads. I am later going to get 2 assault squads and another RG upgrade set, buy a tactical squad and razorback (use as a rhino) and use the 10 spare bolters from the RG set on the tac marines. as the bolters are sternguard pattern, I could double them up as sternguard (one of my favorite infrantry units).

You're right, god forbid anyone actually works hard so they can have disposable income to spend on cool models without considering you.

On topic, go BA. You can add a LRA at a later point, and anyone who will let you use it in a regular game probably won't have much of an issue with you using it in a BA army. That point probably entirely depends on how strong your local meta is.

anywho, I think you're right. Might go for a nice LR ares... It doesn't say hull-mounted demolisher cannon, so I could put it on a turret... hmm... That's what I shall get aafter the sanguard...

If nothing else, think of the fun factor: would you rather make your own army up (yes, I know you're using the BA codex for your own fluff, but it still counts as "your army") or would you rather have a single vehicle that will make you chuckle as your friends can't deal with it, but then get bored with it after a game or two and everyone refusing to play it? Definitely go with the Blood Angels, and the background sounds awesome. Keep us updated on how the army plays, and some pics would be nice too

#1. The Land Raider Achilles is not in Codex.

#2. I thought that non-codex units (Forgeworld units) could only be played with an opponent's permission and definitely are not allowed in tournaments?

#3. The Land Raider Achilles needs to NEVER be fielded in an actual game in my opinion. It is AV14, and is immune to melta, lance, and gives -1 to any roll on the damage table. That means it cannot be destroyed by some armies. That's even BEFORE we get to its ridiculous array of weaponry. It seems pretty clear that its meant to be fielded on an apocalypse table - along with units like the Caestus Assault Ram. Those don't BELONG on a regular table. And if they are fielded on the table, I would expect to have a couple of Stompas facing off against them. Doesn't matter if they ignore melta and lance, I get to pick them up with my lifta-droppa and fling them across the table for automatic penetrating hits.

they don't belong there- but they are. The PDF says it can be used in a vanilla, BT, SW, RW, or any other SM army except BA. Dunno about the tourney rule, but don't you need player permission for just about anything? when you think about it- you could have a OP codex unit and you ask someone for a game. They could simply say no, I don't fancy taking on X. It's too broken. And you can't do squat about it. (s)he could easily just quit the game because (s)he's losing. If you spend all that money, time and devotion on buying, painting and building a uber-pricey FW unit, those who refuse to play you are either newbies to the game (you shouldn't be crushing them mercilessly- that's just mean, or are pros, who should be good enough to deal with it, or at least welcome the challenge. If they refuse they are just being jerks. [/rant]
