Here is the army that started it all for me. Sadly, I got out of the hobby and sold it in 2003 or so. I didn't mind much then but I regret it now, it would have been nice to keep them for nostalgia's sake. Oh well, at least I got a good chunk of change!

The whole group:

Command:

Tacticals

Assault

Dread

Ravenwing

Deathwing

Devastators

Armor

These weren't quite done, there was some freehand done after these pics were taken on the robes of the assault troops, and every single instance of red was painted black on the inside, so that only the outline was red.

Ah, good memories.

Camkhieri: "And another very cool thing, my phones predictive text actually gave me chicken as an option after typing robot, how cool is that."'

Meercat: "All eyes turned to the horizon and beheld, in lonely and menacing grandeur, the silhouette of a single Grot robot chicken; a portent of evil days to come."

lol this is oldschool stuff, I clipped the banners out of white dwarfs and codex's lol! Although some additional painting was done over them, I like my dark angels, well, um, dark. So I got rid of brighter boarders, and made sure to add in some scripting on some.

nice mix of well painted 2nd and 3rd edition stuff. it's nice to see the old tradition of back banners on a pic once in a while. i unfortunately clipped all mine off in my marine army (also my first) to just store the models easier except for a few sergeants. when i got back into 40k, i made a resolution that i'd try to mostly recycle my stuff to fund any new purchases (ie. selling on ebay, trading, etc) and i decided to put up two armies on the chopping block to fund a new one. my marines were definitely the worst painted (unlike yours!) but i just couldn't sell my first army.

It's wondrous to see somebody willingly playing era mix and match with their models like this. Even better is the fact that you painted up an Emperor's Champion to go with this army.

I hope you get bit by the Unforgiven bug and eventually go a hobby rampage to get back to a nice big wad of hoodie marines again. 'Twould be awesome!

I feel bad commenting on how good they are..I mean you don't really own them and seeing how much everyone else liked them and you sold them. But, I think they are cool. I agree with you- Dark Angels should be dark!

Well, I know this is an old post but, I was wondering if you could write how you painted your DA tactical squad (maybe step by step is possible). Thanks!

I literally joined this site to ask this

Oh wow... lol... I can't believe these 15 year old models still get comments lol!

I was a long, long time ago... but basically if I remember it was something like -

Black primer
DA green/Black 60-40 mix layer
DA Green next layer
Mix of DA and Scorpion Green 60-40 near edges
very fine edging with scorpion green, possibly slightly knocked back not to be neon with a little DA green.

The trick is to leave most of the models very, very dark green and use thinned paints to layer near the edges.

Next steps are to use all the usual DA iconogragphy, but hollow out anything solid red and paint the the inside black, leaving only a thin red outline. All weapons black, not red.

I recently uploaded these pictures direct to Dakka so there is a gallery with a few shots not seen above there if you want to look -

http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-22687-51501_Dark%20Angels%2C%20Early%20Work.html

Particularly this one -

It's not the way I would do it now obviously, older techniques but still good for tabletop... that being said, if I was to do them again I probably would go even darker, starting off black and knocking back all the subsquent layers and highlights 1 step darker... I would make them even darker!

Good luck!
