The title says it all! I hate the PB models and fiend models, and cannot justify spending $22 a model for fiends, no matter how good they are. I have a bunch of spare 40 mm bases; so any good ideas for making cheaper fiends/PB's?

For PBs I have always liked the idea of Skaven. What bears a plague better than a four and a half foot rat? Perhaps some greenstuff and the addition of extra bits can make them more Nurgly. Clanrats are $33.00 for a box of 20! That should fill your ranks rather quickly.

mmm.... great idea! Would have to look into making em more plague-y, but green stuffing some boils and pox on em would fit the bill I reckon!

For Fiends, I like using a Spawn for a proxy. They look the part and won't be confused with anything else in the Daemon list (aside from Spawn created from Boon, but you shouldn't be using that anyway). If you can find the old Tide of Spawn box, that's a great way to start up a bunch of Fiends. There are still a few laying around on the internet.
Plaguebearers can be converted fairly convincingly out of Bloodletters:

I'm experimenting on making an all plastic army for Slaanesh and Khorne. The Fiends I'm going to use will be converted from the plastic Seekers. While I havent tested this out myself yet, I theorize that you can glue the daemonette's body to the front of the mount's neck, and use some putty to smooth it out. The Daemonnette should come with the crab claws, and you can also use the Daemonette's legs as the fiend's Forelegs. A single box costs around 30 CAD or so, and can yield 5 fiends if done this way.
As for Plaguebearers, I second the Bloodletter idea. Just make sure to completely file away any khorne symbols on the swords and carve them into a broken blade (with the tips squared off) like the CSM Plague Sword on the Plaguemarine Champion. Alot of the conversions I've seen omit that step, and it makes it very obvious as to where the base came from.

You could also use ghouls from fantasy as plaguebearers.

Thing about Ghouls is that they lack the horn and Plague Knives, which the bloodletters do have.

I Like the spawn idea as well; great for extra bits, and works awesome for the army!

Those are nice models but totally inappropriate for Fiends, they're only 20-25% as tall as a standard Fiend. Spawn don't have that problem.

My buddy Ian did some rather nice Fiend conversions by taking the some spare horses he had laying around (I believe from Chaos Murader Horsemen), and greenstuffing on the upper body of a Daemonette, and greenstuffing on a claw or talon on the tail. They look really good, and you should have spare torsoes/arms/heads from the Daemonettes box, just no legs.
For the Plaguebearers, these guys might be what you're looking for. Bit more expensive than clanrats at $35 for 16, but you get hand weapons which can be used a plague swords, an instument, and an "icon." Plus, they look very very nice painted up in browns and greens as Plaguebearers.
Those don't do it for you, you could always roll with Zomies, who are a slightly better value at $35 for 20. Hell, if you need a bunch, buy one box of each and kitbash!

I use spawn for my fiends, and plague monks for my plague bearers. The PB's have converted claws and tentacles from various other demon bits, but they are all still headless as I still haven't found a consistent head that I like.

What would reduce the cost of the buggers even more is if you could just use the square fantasy bases that come with the ghouls for 40k, since technically the square base is what the plaguebearer comes with.

Potentially the rumored Wrack Plastic set might also be good for this. However until they are released it's only speculation.

Yeah I think I'll do the chaos spawn route. They look amazing, give me tons of bitz, and I really do hate the fiend models. It'll be $100 (before my store discount) to get 6, so in the end I'll be saving around $40 after my discount.
Great ideas all around tho guys!

I went the Cold One route, and have been fairly pleased with them for how cheap and easy they are. Granted, they don't completely fit the feel of the army, but the boob/goat/scorpion things only so much do. They just don't have that streamlined, supple, dextrous, and deadly thing going on for them.
I don't mind 'em too much. They're an easy conversion at least, just added some claws, shaved the saddle into armor, cut back the reigns and glued it to a base. I can get a unit of 5 for roughly the price of one this way so I can definitely deal with it.

Seekers seem the obvious way to get Fiends. Just repose and add some Daemonette arms to them. Done!
Ghouls are also obvious for Plaguebearers. Just repose them standing up a bit.

Issue with ghouls is... needing bases. I have slotted bases. Also, they don't have any swords. I think the letters idea would be perfect seeing as I'll be getting chaos spawn anyway!
