Subject: A touching (unofficial!) Calvin and Hobbes.
For a change, i shall not be posting war stories, cynicism, bitterness, politics or Religion.
I have always loved comics and cartoons of all stripes, and i am a keen drawer and painter in my spare time when im not drinking heavily. Ill prove it.. here is a badly photographed characture i drew of our medic when i was in the Gan.
Anyway, out of all the crappy strips you get in the press, i have always liked Calvin and Hobbes the most. Dilbert is alright, but it just seems a tad.. pretentious? Oh and Scott Adams seems a bit of a douche.. but anyway i digress.
I think I like the strip because he (Calvin) is just a playful boy, and he reminds me of when i was a lad, and i didnt know or care about war or politics or Religion. And i think that time of your life is truly the happiest, before you grow up and end up a cynical old bastard.
Anyway, I check it out everyday, and i found this, and i found it genuinelly touching, so i wanted to share it with you lot.
See.. im a bit softie really.

Yeah it isnt, some other dude drew it. I just thought it was... depressing, and worth a look.

I dont think it is either, the text doesn't seem to match match the bubble size somehow.

Yeah, i dont think any kids at all were given pills when i was a kid. They got a gakker round the head when they were naughty, seemed to work better!

I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent.

No.... definitely not...
And to keep on topic I agree that imagination is far to often mislabeled as ADD. Of course kids would rather be out playing than be locked in school, that is hardly grounds for medication. If there are kids out there with real ADD, they aren't getting the attention they need because of all the misdiagnoses. Also, Calvin and Hobbes was one of the best comic strips of all time.

Not C/H but you've read them all anyway, instead;

I love that we are giving drugs to kids who don't need them and not giving enough to ones that do. Silly medical research and science, always trying to get one over on us. What has science ever done to help us?

I'm very suspicious of all the ADHD claims. I mean, is it a medical condition, or a behavioural disorder? Because behavioural disorders can be learned, and therefore, you can learn to stop doing them, too. Seems like ADHD is a nice way to sidestep being a crappy parent for some people. (I have no doubt that some kids have actual chemical imbalances, but I have serious trouble believing that every kid I've come across with that label does, or the symptoms of said imbalance are completely and utterly inconsistent. Likewise, I've seen kids who have trouble sitting still who otherwise are well behaved, and then a much larger contingent of ill disciplined toerags who constantly crow about their ADHD when asked to do anything resembling functioning like a normal member of society. We'll see how that pans out for them in the working world.)
OT: Calvin and Hobbes have grown on me, I don't think I've ever read one that hasn't made me smile.
Wasn't the idea of the tiger being a hallucination already done by Robot Chicken? Sure, it wasn't as poignant, but it didn't condone the disuse of medication in order to entertain delusions.

The sad part is that when they're doping the kids down and making them step in line, they're also stifling some truly beautiful creativity. No, the reason why that girl can't sit still is not because she has ADHD. It's because she's a dancer. No, the reason why that boy can't be quiet during class is not because he needs more medication, it's because he's bright and inquisitive.
Besides, most of the symptoms related to ADHD and treated with medication are actually issues with a poor diet. What with too much sugar and the like. That's not to say that ADHD is a valid disorder, but it's much more inflated than it should be.

I've known several people that were diagnosed ADHD.
Among those folks I haven't known a single one who appeared to be misdiagnosed. Rapid, uncontrolled speech patterns. Little to no ability to focus whatsoever. Little to no ability to make rational judgments (like jumping off of two story buildings because it's fun). In most cases they can't stand still for more than a few minutes at a time. I don't agree with the amount of medication prescribed in many cases, but I generally consider meds to be a last resort either way.
I'm not saying that being adventurous isn't a good thing, but it can be clearly irrational in some cases. Whether or not you believe someones child should be running around riding bikes backwards into traffic is one thing, but the parents make the call, and your opinion is pretty much meaningless.
Let's be clear, you can be creative and intelligent, and just a kid, while at the same time ADHD. There is no reason this can't be the case.
Wait...
Back on topic, and no I'm not ADHD.

Wow, that it actually a really well done comic (the one about the pills starting to work). Watterson would have never written one like that, although the undercurrent of dissonance between 'Hobbes' and 'Calvin's Stuffed Tiger' surfaces occasionally during the strip in interesting ways.
RustyKnight wrote:Wasn't the idea of the tiger being a hallucination already done by Robot Chicken? Sure, it wasn't as poignant, but it didn't condone the disuse of medication in order to entertain delusions.
First, the term delusion doesn't really apply to Calvin's perception of Hobbes. It's not assumed that Hobbes can't be two things at once.
Second, even if Hobbes is imaginary, the term delusion doesn't really apply. Calvin is a five or six year old boy, and children that age don't really understand reality. They're still on the learning gradient coming out of solipsism. Having an imagination and belief in the impossible at that age is considered the norm. The term delusion implies that the individual knows better; that expectation can't be extended to a small child.

(its a series of a few comics, just keep hitting next)
Buddy showed it to me (I'd seen it before but not in a long time). That really speaks to me, as I've had a recurring nightmare than isn't to dissimilar.

Yeah, I wasn't medicated as a kid. The doctor basically left it up to my mum to decide. I think part of the reason for that was that I wasn't really hyperactive. Not all kids with Attention Deficit Disorder are, that's why there's some differentiation between ADD and ADHD.
For what it's worth, I kinda wish I had been medicated. I think it impacted upon my life.
Mattyrm:
This guy does a pretty entertaining comic; a lot of had-to-be-a-Marine-to-understand. I get a hell of a kick out of it, I think you might too
