Here's a picture before painting. The Space Marine model is for scale purposes. The Bolter Shell is about 3.33 inches long. These will be painted before the giveaway on Dec. 11-12.

Maybe a heavy bolter round? Assuming an increase in calibre as well as rate of fire in the heavy bolter, corresponding with, say, a 7.62mm Squad Support Weapon versus a squad member's 5.56mm rifle?
Possibility?
Or maybe whoever made the bolter round ornaments just fethed up?

Here's a picture of painted Bolter Shells with a view of the bottom as well. I measured these tonight and they are rather large at about 1.25" in diameter for the projectile part and about 3.6" long.

A dummy boltgun shell laying in front of a "real" assault cannon round: dummy round for a 30mm Avenger cannon.
A dummy boltgun shell I made a while back out of a "high brass" magnum shotgun shell base and a 20mm Oerlikon AA gun projectile. It's laying on top of some old Citadel miniatures patches.
12 gauge shotgun shells are 20mm in diameter or about .75" the same as boltgun shells. Bolters are supposed to be caseless, but they always have casings of some sort ejecting from them either stubby or full length.
I've got some full length brass 12 gauge shells, too, but I haven't played with them yet. They look like .75 magnum pistol rounds.
Big Sky surplus ( http://www.bigskysurplus.com/) sells 100 inert 20mm projectiles for $200; I don't even want to think about the shipping costs.

Ummm, not to go TOO far OT, but I'm pretty sure the "assault cannon" is meant to be something similar to the 7.62mm GE M134 Minigun...not a 30mm CANNON!
I think that the 30mm Vulcan is probably closer to the Vulcan Mega-Bolter on Imperial Titans...can't see a Marine, even in Terminator armour, lugging one of those around...

Wow. A gw store manager actually does something cool for people who will likely be spending a butt-load of money in the store anyway, and people are complaining that its not authentic or realistic enough? It's just awful that it won't match up properly scale-wise with your pretend toy soldier army...: (
It's too bad that this ornament isn't appropriately sized to hand on your Christmas Tree, either, right?
Some people need to get a life. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all, and for the love of everything not anal and ridiculous, look at the spirit that motivated the store to build these ornaments. The money to make the molds and purchase all the resin and tools, including paints, CAME OUT OF THEIR OWN POCKETS, with NO GW SUPPORT. This project was done in support of what is probably a fantastically thriving gaming comunity. A community that is thriving and vibrant exactly because of store managers like this guy in Maryland, who obviously cares about his gaming community.
Sorry if I ranted a bit, and no disrespect meant to anyone, but it burns me that anyone could complain about cool things like this, when people like me in the northeast DON"T EVEN HAVE GW STORES. I sincerely wish I had the staff at the Jennifer Square store running a store up the street from me!

Well that's a dickish thing to say. I think its unreasonable for you to expect people to have ESP and understand the details of something that no one has given. The details of something happening outside of our local area. We were given a few lines of text none of which mentioned what you're saying and we commented on those.
I'm grateful someone in GW still has a sense of the holidays, but you're being harsh and unreasonable.
Since you have such a high opinion where do you draw the line between constructive critique and criticism?

Thanks, dude, I couldn't have said it better myself and I couldn't agree with you more.
For the record, if people wanted it that way, these bolter shells were being distributed with a screw-eye in the bottom so that they could be hung as or like tree ornaments.
Also for the record, the mold for these bolter shells was originally created in-house at GW in order to give these to employees with a few years of service before they got to their 5 year mark and got something more formal.
As far as "authentic size" of bolter shells, I have yet to see anyone produce anything that is "official" regarding exactly what size is "correct" by the published GW 40K lore, just a lot of unsubstantiated claims and complaining.
Finally, today is the second day of the promotion. If you're in the area and wanted to come check out the store, we have an extremely nice community and the store operator is great. With a few exceptions unfortunately as in any community or forum, most of the people are pleasant and do not behave rudely or complain about nothing all the time.
