Hi,

I'm after a quick bit of advice on the simplest and cheapest way to get assault marine squads on foot. They're for a project I've started which is my own design for a chapter and I wanted to represent the 8th Company, Assault Reserves. I will be included some jump packs, but only on a squad of Vanguard Vets (to act as a special strike unit for the company) and the bog standed troops I wanted to be Assault Marines on foot transported in rhinos and a single LR Crusader (command vehicle)

I was looking at and wondering about the Space Wolf Battle box and wondering if anybody knew if it included vanilla marine sprues, with the space wolf bits being on separate sprues? (both for the marines and the scouts). This can be found for around £40 at some online stores, which would make it very good value. Considering the cost of 2x 10 man assault squads (4 assault marine boxes), a scout squad and a drop pod comes out at £107 RRP

Hopefully I'll have some of marines I already own painted up soon, so I can get them into their own post along with some info and organisation of my 8th Company!

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, SW is ALL SW parts. backpacks, legs, helmets, bolters. Although if you avoided the SW icons, they'll make some cool Vanguard or Sternguard

You could just buy normal SM battleforces and get some BP/CCW bitz from online sources

There are a small amount of bolt pistols and chainswords in the tac marines box but you would want to add a few boxes of assault marines for variety and arms.

Okay, I've been on a bit of a hiatus 2011-14

Currently working on my Riot Guard.

Thanks for the replies. I guess it's on to plan B...

Not decided what plan B involves yet though!

The standard SM battle box could work if it includes enough extra bolt pistol/chainsword arms to use the combat squad as assault. I might also look into some of the bits suppliers/ebay and see what other options present themselves.

Or you could just get an Assault Squad and sell the jump packs.

Yeah, I'd go with Kanluwen here in recommending just getting assault marines, preferably from a discount online retailer, then selling the jump packs for outrageously inflated prices on ebay They tend to go at a premium anyway.

Or just get a bunch of marines on ebay in the first place, if that's your thing.

I think actually that might be the best bet. Find some discount Assault marines and then get rid of the jump packs. I've got some orks i never got round to doing anything with which i was going to sell on ebay anyway. So will crack on with that in the new year (once the post office is back up and running normally!)

Thanks folks, promise i'll have some pictures up soon!

Indeed. I built my 5 Tactical Squad Veteran Sergeants out of an Assault Squad box.

If you buy an assault squad though, you're paying for the jump packs. I'd bit order several assault squad arm sprues for the pistols/ccws and then lurk ebay for cast off metal marines. They're simple and cheap to rebuild if you aren't afraid to strip paint.

For my personal custom Assault Marines I used the Khorne Berzerkers box set, swapping out the heads and shaving off the khorne icons. This gives you the advantage of being able to very small magnets to set them up to be convertable between standard foot sloggers and with their jump packs. Also, I love the running legs from the Berzerkers box as it makes them look like they are charging more.

Just an idea.

if you want an assult squad id just by the box set that has the jump packs they come with regular back packs sice thats an option that they have (to remove their jump pack) so like others have said, just the the SM assult squad and not use the jump packs. im sure you could trade them or somethin

Assault marines come with the harnesses only, seems a silly detail to me since you can put a jump pack on any other power armored trooper without it. I'd rather imagine the pack locks in place on the armor

You get the regular torsos as well (for a total of 10 full torsos), which is handy if you want to build running tactical marines as the bolter arms dont fit well over the harnessed torsos.

I would use tactical marine box and then get the Chaos/Khorne Marine sprues to supplement it. Definitely the cheapest option with minor conversion.
