OK, I admit it, I like Steeleye Span! I am sitting here sipping a rum and listening to a song called Cam Ye O'er Frae France which has some interesting lyrics to say the least. I feel strongly that traditional and folk songs should be preserved as its part of our living heritage and a link to years gone by. Anyway, I feel a weight off my chest - I'm 30 now, I can't listen to metal and all that dunga dunga squee crap for 100% of the time!

Cam ye o'er frae France? Cam ye down by Lunnon?
Saw ye Geordie Whelps and his bonny woman?
Were ye at the place ca'd the Kittle Housie?
Saw ye Geordie's grace riding on a goosie?

Geordie, he's a man there is little doubt o't;
He's done a' he can, wha can do without it?
Down there came a blade linkin' like my lordie;
He wad drive a trade at the loom o' Geordie.

Though the claith were bad, blythly may we niffer;
Gin we get a wab, it makes little differ.
We hae tint our plaid, bannet, belt and swordie,
Ha's and mailins braid -- but we hae a Geordie!

Jocky's gane to France and Montgomery's lady;
There they'll learn to dance: Madam, are ye ready?
They'll be back belyve belted, brisk and lordly;
Brawly may they thrive to dance a jig wi' Geordie!

Hey for Sandy Don! Hey for Cockolorum!
Hey for Bobbing John and his Highland Quorum!
Mony a sword and lance swings at Highland hurdie;
How they'll skip and dance o'er the bum o' Geordie!

OK even more of a secret shame than being a closet wargames geek.

I suppose liking folk music pales in comparison....

I couldn't understand a single lyric, but I think you just insulted my mother.

It's. On.

Nothing at all wrong with enjoying folk music...especially with a little extra kick.

I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent.

But proper folk music generally revolves around three things.

Namely drinking, fighting and shagging.

Whats not to like?

Celtic Folk is becoming trendy again (see: Mumford and Sons). I love Amy McDonald who is basically pop-folk and there are many local Celtic groups in Texas. I'm going to have to check out more of their stuff It would be awesome to trip to were I still into that sort of thing.

That type of music reminds me of some books Mercedes Lackey used to write. They incorporated Fantasy elements and NASCAR-ish elements.

My secret shame? I read Anita Blake books.

I don't know if were talking about hippie folk then it'll be more girly with themes about mother nature, love and peace. I like folk too as long as it's not the girly kind.

Yes, can't think of anything aside from Warhammer. Whenever I buy stuff from GW during my lunch break, I take my bag to hide it in.

Oh hang on, I used to like listening to Meatloaf. Is that worse?

Yes, that is worse but I'll admit I use to like "Meatloaf" as well, the shame.

I almost always agree with Albatross, I can't see why anyone wouldn't.

COUGH COUGH

Oh, whats that there?

Folk music is important. Without folk, we wouldn't have Neil Young, Donovan, John Pryne, or the immortal and timeless Willie.

Ha! I was just thinking of Tempest. Saw them near-20 years ago now, at Bumbershoot in Seattle. I love their version of The House Carpenter.

Actually, for something more contemporary, I highly recommend Bellowhead. Saw them on Jools Holland and got their album. V good.
