The problem with ravenguard is that vanila marines are not good in close combat.

However, I would advice you to take shrike, and eather put him in a squad of assault marines or asault terminators. Assault terminators already have a pretty bad ass reputation in warhammer 40k. Having one start 18" away from you with fleet it not very funn.

I would also get some drop pods or scouts, whoever has teleport homers. If scouts, then stick them in the landspeeder that can carry troops and drive in. Then have a librarian with a second unit of assault terminators and teleport in using the teleport spell.

On your second turn you should be abel to assault with 2 squads of assault terminators terminators! Go with moastly hammer and stormshield. To keep the cost down on troop choises I would advice moastly scouts. Also have some anti tank so that you can bring landraiders and other transports DOWN.

What Niiai has described is called an Alpha-Strike list, and is the most viable tactic to use with Shrike. The strategy is simply to inflict as much damage as possible first turn. To that end, CC scouts in a Land Speeders Storm, Dreadnoughts and Sternguard in Drop Pods, and Shrike with Assaul Terminators are all good ideas.

Assault squads, as have been said, aren't very good in Codex: Space Marines. They lack anti-tank ability, and aren't very good as CC troops, when compared to many other options out there. That said, if you have your heart set on such a thing, look into picking up copy of Imperial Armor 8: Raid on Kastorel Novem, which is available from Forge World. It has a special Raven Guard character that makes Assault Squads troops choices. Who knows. Maybe if they aren't competing with Land Speeders and Bikers for Fast Attack slots, they're more valuable.

The poster Flavius Infernus has a lot of experience with this, and has posted a bit about it here and elsewhere.

LMS if I can dig up any threads...

This thread is primarily about BA AMs vs. IG power blobs, but Flavius chips in some excellent info about regular AMs:

Load up on assault termies. With fleet from shrike, they can really pound some heads in.

I'd make a RG army based on the BA codex.
In this way, you can design a DoA army.
Very nice to play.

Pictures coming soon.

It's possible and fun, but not an auto-win. Check it out.
