(CNN) -- South Korea's planned live-fire military exercises in the Yellow Sea will begin Monday despite threats from North Korea that the drills will result in "disaster," the South Korean military announced.

The drills are slated to take place off Yeonpyeong Island, which North Korean forces shelled in November. North Korea said over the weekend that the planned exercises were a "sinister design" to violate the armistice that ended the Korean War in 1953 and "ignite war at any cost."

That's just not how we roll. We accept full responsibility for all actions undertaken in any war, and make reparations to the 'victims' that supported the old regime. In the short term, it does make everything immensely more expensive and complicated.

On the other hand, history has shown that when you really smack down an aggressor and make them pay for the war after you beat them senseless, you get Germany after WW One. No one really wants to have to fight the Korean War 2 30 years later, so it makes more sense to educate and incentivize the fight out of the opposing population until you're left with at least a neutral government in place.

January 17, 1968: In an incident known as the Blue House Raid, a 31-man detachment from the Korean People's Army secretly crosses the DMZ on a mission to kill South Korean President Park Chung-hee on January 21, nearly succeeding. After entering Seoul disguised as South Korean soldiers, the North Koreans attempt to enter the Blue House (the official residence of the President of South Korea). Of the original group of 31 North Koreans, 28 were killed, one was captured, and two are unaccounted for. January 23, 1968: The United States Naval ship the USS Pueblo is boarded and captured, along with its crew, by North Korean forces in the Sea of Japan, in international waters. The entire crew of 83 is captured, with the exception of one sailor killed in the initial attack on the vessel, and the vessel is taken into North Korean waters. All the captives were released on December 23 of the same year via the Bridge of No Return at the DMZ. The USS Pueblo is still in North Korean possession and is docked in Pyongyang and is on display as a museum ship.[5]

March 26, 2010: A South Korean naval vessel, the ROKS Cheonan, was sunk by an explosion near Baengnyeong Island in the Yellow Sea. A rescue operation recovered 58 survivors but 46 sailors were killed. On May 20, 2010, a South Korean led international investigation group concluded that the sinking of the warship was in fact the result of a North Korean torpedo attack.[10][11] North Korea denied involvement.[12] The United Nations Security Council made a Presidential Statement condemning the attack but without identifying the attacker.[13]
November 23, 2010: North Korea fired artillery at South Korea's Big Yeonpyeong island in the Yellow Sea and South Korea returned fire. Two South Korean marines and two South Korean civilians were killed, six were seriously wounded, and ten were treated for minor injuries. Irregular and smallscale hostilities by two bordering foreign nations, one of which we have an alliance with following a declaration of cease fire half a century ago does not mean we are at war with a nation in any fashion other then purely on paper. We would be at war with mexico, half of south america, pakistan and ourselves were the descriptors for war so meaningless. Apart from the fact that the Japanese had already tried to surrender. To the Russians. America wouldn't let them.

Yes, I've read transcripts from the meetings at which the American Commanders discussed whether to use the bomb. Those that have been opened anyway. Yes, I've read plenty of other accounts of the military operations taking place at the time. Yes, I've lived in Japan, visited both bomb sites. Yes, American lives were saved, but that was not the reason. It was to make sure the Japanese surrendered to the "right" people, and to make sure the current leadership was deposed.

Now, the bombs also did not make Japan like America. That was the occupation that followed, including significant material aid to rebuild, along with redistribution of land and wealth away from powerful companies and banks and wealthy individuals into smaller holdings owned by residents and more transparently operated companies.

Last I saw north korea isn't either. Amazing how that works. Mexican citizens are coming across our borders, killing our civilians, and routinely violating treaties though. We've lost a hell of a lot more citizens to cartel activity this year then we have to North Korea since the cease fire started a long ass time ago.
