Well as the title says?

I'm currently thinking about getting a subscription on some magazine, but I really want to get hold of one that mainly writes about conversions, modeling, terrain making. But off course there I have nothing against articles about all the other parts of the hobby.

I have/work on these: Army and SOG of and a tiny group of (killzone) and some and last some and a gang of Cryx + Others...

You can't always get what you're after with a magazine, these very pages offer some of the best conversions and tutorials I have found.

Save your money and use Dakka.

I have to agree with that - the internet has made hobby magazines redundant. A year's magazine subscription will buy you a netbook or tablet to read articles on when you're out and about.

White Dwarf?

It's the best. It says so on the GW website.

Well okey sure, I read a lot of threads, blogs etc. But i see a magazine as a compliment.

But really I have a netbook and it is not really that comfy to use on the loo for example.

Scott-S6: So what netbook can i get for $109?

grimm: sorry nope, was interested in it when I got back from my hiatus, since it had been quite okey before.. sadly the new numbers I have are not as good as the older ones :/

I have to agree about WD. It's not as good as it used to be, though I still read and subscribe.

I don't want to turn this into a WD hate thread though, so I'll stop talking.

Anyway, you could download and print magazines from the net. Then you can read and crap in comfort.

Try Miniature Wargames. They do a dedicated Sci/fi/fantasy section which covers new figures, rules.

Miniature Wargames.

I can't recommend GW's monthly catalogue.

Miniature Wargames seems quite interesting.

Anyone got any experience of No Quarter and/or Game Forces?

exactly what he says. These are magazines for enthusiasts for the miniatures gaming hobby in general instead of glorified catalogs with some pander-to-the-fan-boy articles to fill in the gaps with encouragement of why and how to best use the newest codex. Honestly has anyone ever seen an objective article in WD about how weak and easily defeatable the latest release is, or a review of a new range of figures that talks about the bad parts of the fig? I mean come on now, if I want to buy a book that just tells me how awesome it is according to its own standards I would get into religion. Seriously GW I can't believe you actua... And Wargames Illustrated/Miniature Wargames don't really talk, at all, about GW's products. What the hell use am I going to get out of paying for their magazines when I don't play Napoleonics?

So, if you want to read about GW products--you're pretty much shoehorned into reading White Dwarf. The same is true for Privateer Press and their magazine.

No other gaming mags really give much attention to GW at all. Once in a great while I guess, but I remember in Min Warg actually reading several articles (back when they had their generic 'fantasy' article) where little underhanded jabs are made at warhammer without necessarily naming it outright. I think the reason for this is that GW doesn't consider itself as part of the 'miniature wargaming' hobby, just as the 'GW hobby' and tries to pretend that no other games exist in their genre, so the players and enthusiasts of non-GW miniatures games kind of return the snub.

Of course GW considers itself as part of the "miniature wargaming hobby".

The difference, however, is that they've gone out of their way to carve a niche out for themselves. Warhammer has brand power to it which counts for alot.

It also doesn't help matters that a lot of your stereotypical and vocal Historical Wargamers consider Warhammer as some sort of "kiddy game" , and they look down upon it as such.

In terms of how long the Historical games have been around, warhammerz IS a kiddy in the pool. 30 years is still nothing compared to some Napoleonic sets.

Although Warhammer Ancients has at least got some credibility in their eyes.

There are also some net-zines that I've seen and The Ancible is reputably quite good (not seen an issue yet) - as opposed to "the Ansible" which is an SF fanzine and blog by Dave Langford.

That's not what I meant by "kiddy game". I meant "game for kids". We had one particular historical gamer, locally, who fit the "stereotype"(unkempt, absurd fascination with ancient cultures to the point where it seems an unhealthy obsession, etc) who went out of his way to mock everyone who came in to play 40k/FB. It got to the point where he was finally just barred from entering the store.

Because it's a "historical" game? That's kind of a ridiculous standard, in my view.

I hate to say it; but I loathe netzines. So many of them just are...blergh.

I mean I get it. It's free, people volunteer their time for it, etc.
But it shows in the quality of most of them.

BloodQuest: Hahaha, yes

Okey I said it quite oversimplified before, but sure, there are days etc when I don't want to sit before of a computer. Since well if I have had a stressful week at work where well I am a programmer I really feel like having a break from them.

Will probably try to order some different magazine numbers (either back issues or the current) in january, just from the different ones I at least gotten some interest in. Or I will continue buying the odd number at the FLGS or any of the LGS here..

Hopefully I find something I like enough. But I'm still open for more suggestions until then (and of course after that).

And I really don't understand why anyone (but sadly I have meet similar persons) would call game X, Y or Z childish just because they them self don't like it. oy...

I was recently introduced to 'Unseen Lerker' a few months ago and I think it's ace.
It's kinda like how White Dwarf was back in the good old days.
Articles from a range of companies, classic miniatures, scenarios, unbiased product reviews etc etc
At 56 pages it may initially seem like a bit of a 'pamphlet' but i've just counted how many pages of actual content the most recent WD has.
I'd strongly suggest checking them out.....

C'mon guys, it all depends on what you want to read about....of course, if you only want to read about GW products, then really, you need to be buying WD....

Personally, I would entertain an interest in seeing what else is out there, and so I would welcome a magazine, that while it didn't necessarily ignore GW, it didn't place an extra focus on it.

On topic: If money is burning a hole in your pocket then there are a number of magazines to chose from, however, I would spend the money on something more interesting, like paints or actual miniatures, perhaps even a ruleset....with the internet and information at the touch of a button, why would you bother with a paper format, that is essentailly out of date the moment the media hits the printers?

If you want something to read while in the bath or sitting on the can, purchase a good book!

Man down, Man down....

The Ancible is an actual IN PRINT magazine as well.
It started out as a net-zine.

It's still better than the toilet paper (ouchies - glossy paper doesn't work well in that regard) WD is these days.

Alex Kolodotschko: Thanks! I had some how forgotten about that magazine

chromedog: Also seems really interesting.

I really liked that both The Ancible and Unseen Lerker had either preview or full earlier numbers for free as PDFs.
