Subject: 2010's effect on 40k - Have things changed?

If im correct, 2009 saw the release of IG, SM, SW and new rulebook. This seemed to alter the metagame, with armour and vehicle spam becoming highly popular. Melta span followed shortly.
2010 saw the release of DE, Nids, BA and supplements. Do you think this had altered the metagame once again and how?
P.S. i havn't played for a year so i would appreciate a summing up of where things stand today.
Also, what lists do you see common in these new armies and how does one beat them?
many thanks

Yes I think the release of Blood Angels and Dark Eldar has had an effect on the Metagame but not a drastic one.
While it has caused Parking Lot IG and Missile Spam SW to re-think their strategies a little I think that those two armies will remain on top.
In Dark Eldar you'd expect to face either a mixed shooty-assualt army or A Haemonculi Coven filled with wracks and venoms.
For Blood Angels I think the most popular is Razorback spam and MSU style armies but there are many competitive builds.
To beat the Dark Eldar you just have to cripple their mobility, which can be easier said then done, however, once they are out in the open and outside their transports they're not too big a threat.
For Blood Angels razorback spam and MSU armies you need to outmaneuver them(Depending on game) In Killpoints they are at a huge disadvantage due to the minimal sized squads and dedicated transports.
Zeph.

I see 2011 being more changing. GK have a rumoured rule that anything DSing within 6 automatically mishaps (ala mystics). If this is true, blood angels have something coming.
I dont like where 40k is at the moment, its in a dark place (pardon the pun) with all these vehicles. Bring back Elites Versus Horde.

Thanks
Crippling DE transports sounds true.
What are wracks and venoms?
What about Nids? When i last played (old Nid codex) popular builds were nidzilla, pure horde and genestealer spam. Should i still expect the same?

I'd been gone for about a year and the biggest surprise that I saw when I got back was just how popular Space Wolves had become. I'd literally see variations of SW - blue, red, black, gray; it didn't matter as that codex is, for the most part, much more flexible and harder hitting than most other marine builds.
The NOVA tourney system really caught a lot of attention and appears to have created the most change in tourney play in several years. Even local tourneys are working to adapt aspects of it.
Other companies producing bits to easily convert GW models seem to have caught on. I see more and more of these around, ranging from bases, jump packs, heads, weapons and such. Makes for some interesting looking models.
As far as armies, I'd say I see more Space Wolf armies at tourneys than anything else, especially non comp events.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby. |

That's interesting. What SW builds/lists do you see?
I remember players ranting about SW cavalry (i think its thunderwolves?) that could be so apparently amazing.
There were no available models for these. Do players use them?
And what makes blood crushers so good? Apparently they're mean.

Wracks are DE who have gone (voluntarily) under the knife (i.e. submitted to being operated on by a Haemonculli). They are tougher but slower than a normal DE warrior and fight with two poisoned weapons.
A Venom is small transport that is marginally cheaper than a Raider. It has flickershields but has a much reduced transport capacity. Basically a Vyper that can carry 5 models and is more difficult to hit.

I've seen 3 units of Long Fangs then in the same army 6 razorbacks. It was hell for my nids, I couldn't get to combat with that many blasts hitting my genestealers.

I pretty much stopped playing halfway through 2010 because I saw the game becoming "I move my metal box at your metal box and melta you!"
I play horde orks and have put hours and hours and hours into the list, and it's just frustrating trying to take down vehicles. I started painting a battlewagon rush army and then my interest in 40K died completely.

I never really played in 4th or before but it would be nice to see more than a few competitive armies without vehicles.

If you are playing as SM and your versing Dark Eldy i sugjest getting a tank hunty army with lots of Las canons a master of the forge and get alot of dread nots. Thier big and hulky packing a big punch and in close combat they wont get stopped by flimsy ST 3 attacks. So basicly shoot down all of their tanks as soon as posible, put your dread nots in reserves and bring um in once you kill all the tanks. Try to stay out of rapid fire range because they will ketch you and kill you if you get to close. So play it safe it will be a slow but steady win. I would personaly get 4 dread nots 2 for each elite and Heavy thanks to the master of the forge and then a termi close combi squad to tie things up or help out dieing squads.

You didn't miss much. Most people talking about it are obviously blinded by nostalgia. Cover system was pretty fun .
Vehicles did improve but you're not going to see a fully mechanized list in every single game ever.
In my opinion if it wasn't vehicles it would be assault rush. While you can't just roll over the entire enemy army like you could in 4th, thanks to the changes in consolidation rules, units in 40k are a fair bit faster than they were in 4th.
So far things haven't really changed with the release of these new codices. If they are to change the meta it would take a bit longer. The Blood Angels near army wide fast vehicles did not really help this.
Also Eldrad take lots of Missile Launchers instead that way you'll have a weapon to effectively deal with the contents of the transports when they are dead. The difference in S9 vs S8 isn't really such a big deal when you're using it to deal with open topped armour 10 vehicles.

It's true, with rhinos being as cheap as they are, SM can quite easily spam them and razorbacks beyond belief.
Armor is aggrivation, big, fast, gun toting aggrivation, taking the form of boxes with Spess Mahreen! payloads...

Mattieu~~~~ It's not that eldar are bad, it's that they require a lot of intergration between units. Also, that doesnt prove anything other than GW has a huge hard-on for marines, and, given the option between making a xeno the best psykers or making a marine the best psyker, they will 9 times out of 10 choose the marine.

STOOPID METL BAWKSES!
Vehicles should be able to fire more while moving and go back to old damage table.
It would also be very nice to see damage results modified by how much yo penetrated the tank.
I find it disgraceful that a shadowsword (baneblade variant) can shoot an ork trukk and have a 1 in 6 chance of only taking of a big shoota
