Hey all, I recently received a little tactical advice from a friend. It involved place a squad of 20+ gretchin right on either the left or right table edge, the goal would be to stop the outflankers from appearing there. And so that would leave my whole right/left flank in relative safety. And i was told that if he does outflank to that table edge but i have the whole edge covered with gretchin, the outflanking unit is then destroyed.

Would that actually work?

Thanks

So long as there is less than a 1"(or rather 25mm) gap between each Grot, then yes; the unit is available from reserves, and outflank says that unit must come in from the rolled edge. if they cannot move on from that edge do to impassable terrain(that is models lining the edge an not enough of a gap to move past their bases) then the unit cannot come in from reserves and thus is destroyed.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

You can actually spread out at full coherency. The Stealers can't approach within 1" of an enemy model in the movement phase, and the gap has to be at least 3" for them to fit through it.

Mann is correct; i was tired from dealing with my naughty children all day, and clearly thinking of another game(erroneously thinking that movement passed another's base was fine, but ending within 1" was verboten).

You can theoretically block the whole table edge, yes. Whether it is actually possible in reality is a different matter. In the best case (on Spearhead) it would take you 3 or 4 turns to string your mob out along the whole edge to the point where you could totally block the table edge. Even then Grots are so absurdly easy to damage that your opponent would be able to open some gaps pretty easily.

Having said that, though, using a light infantry screen to protect your flanks works really well. I use a Penal squad for this with my Guard. You don't need to block the whole edge to gain an advantage, just prevent your opponent from running on in a position where they would easily threaten your back line (in my case running melta guns or power fists into the crunchy flanks of my tanks). If you cover your 50% of the short edge then it is much harder for outflanking CC troops to do much damage. They will definately be able to reach your screening troops, however, so its best to make these pretty cheap.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Yes it actually works, you can wall of deployment by using your own models if they can make it impossible for the enemy units to come on, however vehicles may still try to tank shock you away.

It was actually done in a tournament some time ago, a tau player with a lot of kroot was playing against a space marine biker player who held his whole army in reserve. He infiltrated the kroot to his enemies deployment zone and kroot walled it off, instant win. There's a picture floating around here somewhere...

Actually, there is room for debate as to what happens to those outflanking units. There is no rule that specifically covers it. Most around here say they would be destroyed, but there are other opinions, and I have yet to see rules providing direct support to any one answer. (unless I have missed a new FAQ or such.)

Yep, the new FAQ would take care of it.

Q: What happens when a unit arrives from reserves but is
unable to completely move onto the board? (p94)
A: The unit is destroyed and removed from play.

Yep, very good update. I read that one, and in my little brain, only applied it to vehicles trying to get on the board.

Thanks

Yeah, I did that to a nid player in the 3rd round of the 'ard boyz final this year.

A) Was a win for me
B) Left me with nothing to do for 2 1/2 hours.

All over

i had a person do this to me against my orkz to stop snikrot. The minute my warboss hit the line of kroot I broke the unit they ran off the board and snikrot came on to beat the snot out of the tau. White it works in the start it wont hold for long.

That only worked for you because you managed to hit the line before snikrot was available; the moment snikrot becomes available and cannot get on table(for whatever reason) he and his unit are destroyed.

Except that Snikrot isn't limited to one rolled table edge. He can come in anywhere; unless you somehow manage to line all four sides of the table.

Well that is true but the situation he described made it seem as though either Snikrot didn't become available until after the warboss hit the rear line(which would be maybe turn 4, the boss hitting at turn 3); or Snikrot had become available and he somehow delayed him until the route was clear.

Might just be my misunderstanding of the exact situation.

Well, you were right that the reason the combo worked as well as it did was that the warboss got to the blocking unit before Snikrot arrived. The only part you were wrong about is Snikrot being destroyed; since he could have just come in further down the table edge somewhere he's not blocked.
