I've been following the discussion in the GW Trading Statement thread over in News and Rumours and it got me wondering what exactly does trigger us to part with our cash?

This was a tricky poll to phrase, so apologies if you can't fit yourself exactly into a box.

For me its the look of the models that is the initial pull. I unintentionally got into warhammer fantasy battles when a local toy store put all their battle for skull passes on sale at 40 pounds. Seemed a great deal as I had been on the fence about Dwarfs for ages as an army after dabbling on and off with my beastmen. Then over christmas I made the most of the GW online vouchers and extra cash I got towards expanding the dwarf force that started me with. Before the VAT increase. Now 1500 points of dwarfs in progress.

I mostly buy because I like the look of the model, though I am a sucker for impulse purchases every now and then.

I have a budget, and I buy according to that budget.

Of course, my budget allows me to buy according to option #3.

Option 4 for me. Last big order went in this week and I dont intend on buying anything new until much later this year (barring some really cool new scenery release).

I pick up most new books for the systems I play regularly (40k and FoW). As for models, I usually just buy what I need.

Option 3 for me, kinda.

I always have a main game and then some side games.

For the "main" game, I buy all the books for all the factions and usually keep up to date on at least one factions releases.

On side games, I have varying commitment -- from buying most of the models in a single faction to the occasional purchase here and there for the stuff I really like.

I choose option number 2 I am occasionally tempted into buying books/miniatures for other armies if I like the look of them This isn't really a bad thing as I don't really play the game that often, I buy mini's mainly just to paint. I imagine it could turn into a problem if I actually started a proper army. Going off and buying other models on top of the ones you need to build your army could potentially get expensive

Three reasons I buy models, not in priority order.

1. I need it for an army.
2. I like the figure even though I don't need it.
3. Retail therapy -- I want to buy something and I justify the purchase with a vague idea that it will come in useful for something.

A lot of the stuff I buy is not GW.

I don't collect any armies or play any games, so I'll buy something if I think it looks cool or I have an idea for a diorama or something.

My three criteria.

1. Need.
2. Want.
3. Would be nice.

I need it for my army (to finish or add a needed unit).
I want it because I like the look of it.
Would be nice to have but I neither play that army or need to have it.

#1&2 often swap places.

I buy every book for my chosen game system (40k) but rarely pick up every army. Only change in that was for Dark Eldar since they were so dang pretty!!!

I pretty much always buy whatever the new Army Book/Codex is, I like reading new fluff, and getting familiar with new rules/wargear/characters.

New models I generally only buy if I can use it (or more accurately, pieces of it) for my two main armies, Orks and Beastmen. Although from time to time, I'll buy something new if it inspires me. Last few of those inspired purchases were various Dark Eldar, Legion of the Damned, River Trolls and most of the Skaven special characters.

I tend to stick with the army I am currently working on but tend to buy a lot of the monsters from warhammer fantasy.

Option 2 for me. As a Tyranid player, I get very easily bored painting the same thing over and over again, so I occasionally buy some models as a break.

None of the above.

I only really paint single models, so for me it's either when I've finished all the models I already have, or a particularly awesome model appears.

Or when I get an idea for a cool army, that I'll never battle with

I went with option 2, but really I just buy whatever I fancy, no real loyalty to an army or system. This gets me in allot of trouble with the Mrs especially once the unpainted boxes start to collect dust.

I voted for the second option. For minis I typically buy to an army list, but I try and buy Army Books/Codices/Forces books as they are released and I have the cash to hand

I'm somewhere between the first and last options. I have only bought books and models for the two armies I collect, thus far. While I might be tempted to buy another army's really cool model just for the sake of building and painting it, I've kept solely to models I can field, since my painting backlog is already massive (relative to the rate at which I paint, at least).

I also haven't bought a new model in quite some time. I got enough models together for two smaller but playable forces, so I'm done expanding my collections until A) I once again have some disposable income and B) I've painted up significantly more, if not all, of the models already assembled. I might ignore point B, should I find myself in a position where I've got the cash and I'm playing regularly enough that I find I need a few models to round out a more playable force.
