A guy that paints here at the shop was wanting some feedback his paintings. He was thinking about doing paint jobs for people. His style is very clean and they look great in person. Here are some examples for feedback.

The Nids look greak, and the only problem I have with the wolves is that they look to pristine.

I would say they look pretty good.

I will say that I feel the paint is a bit thick though but that could just be me.

The nids are worth paying for, certainly.

The Wolves are very clean, but with such excellent brush control as he obviously has, it is a shame he doesn't do more detailing and highlighting.

In his case, his work is so good, I think it would be a shame to see it spoiled with washed - I think he needs to do some edge highlighting.

Also, I agree the paint looks a bit thick.

No highlights on the Space Wolves armor.
Eavy Metal did a nice tut on space wolves armor in their white dwarf but he needs line highlights. It will still keep his clean look and will boost their quality a lot.

Well he really went over these comments and I believe set up his own account. Tomorrow is going to be the day to try and implement all of this.

Nids are nice but the wolves need a wash or something. Seems like just a lot of solid color on the main armor plates.

No shading no hilighting. He's off to a good start but those are the areas he needs to work on next.

As for painting for other people, there's no reason he can't if someone wants him to. We fortunately don't have any miniature painters certification bureau to regulate who can paint for whom. I wouldn't say he's in the professional painter category, but if a friend wants to pay him to paint their army then more power to him!

Thanks for the info I did the painting on the figs. The paint is not thick it's a thin coat on the figs. The shading I do need to work on. The highlighting I have never done so I'm going to try it out. The terminator is shaded but how much more. I used the black wash.

Mould lines! Do not like. The flat colour style disguises them to some extent, but as soon as you apply a wash or attempt to blend over them you'll tear your hair out in frustration. Especially important on metallic areas, and large flat panels (like the backs of the dreadnought arms).

Accuracy is fair to good. (This is pretty important - most other things come with experience and practice, this is the only thing I'd classify as a 'talent' factor). Overpainting going on with the yellow black and not very straight lines on the zigzag. Eyes are crossed and staring. Bolter barrels not drilled in line with side vent hole.

The paint is thick. It looks like you've tried to go straight to SW grey from a black undercoat. Unwise - light colours will not cover dark without many coats, which build up to a rougher finish than fewer will. Intermediate coats of high opacity (eg foundation) or working up the colour through shade is required.

Particularly noticeable on the Gaunts teeth and carapace and on the yellow/black areas on the terminator. You'll find you can thin a bit more when working up through darker shades while highlighting (as you actually want a bit of translucence with each stage).

But assuming a relatively new painter, it's not a bad start at all. There are a load of tutorials and step-by-steps on how to do these things in different ways - keep plugging at it and it'll all come good.

I would say no personally to commission painting, the style looks to simple (block colours) and like others have said, the paint does look a little thick.

I think with thinner layers and better blending of colours (especially on the tyranid carapace) will go a long way.

i wouldnt pay money for that standard...! any 1 could reach that level within a few weeks as that a very basic paint job. I wish him good luck though.

I think some washes and weathering on the Space Wolves (particularly their armour) would add some depth and interest. They are clean but a little flat...

A very good paint job. However it does not feature any advanced techniques that would make it a professional paint job.

Hey Drake

looks good. Don't bother asking on a forum like this though, you will get replies all over the spectrum. The real proof is when you get people to put their money where their mouth is. There are plenty of models over on CoolMini that got a 8.5 but sold for over $100. Its worth what the guy with the cash is willing to pay. It really depends on how fast you are and what you are willing to accept. I would call those paint jobs "table top." Most internet services charge $1 - $3 per model for a paintjob like that. Are you willing to do it for that kind of money? Make a sign and hang it up in the store -- see what happens. Or paint some stuff up on spec and put in on Ebay at a lower than fair price (you can sneak in a reserve if you're nervous) and see if you can acquire a following.

The paint looks a bit thick and the paint jobs generally look a tad flat, some stronger shading and highlighting would do wonders.

I have to agree with the other posters here that becoming more proficient with highlighting, shading, and lining would do wonders for the appearance of the models, especially the dread.

Wolves need some highlights, they look really bland because it''s all just smooth.

Wolves look to be a solid, standard TT quality; nothing jaw-dropping but the colours look solid and the faces are done well. However, if the painter wishes to improve I would highly recommend using washes and highlighting on the armour to really make the models 'pop'. As it stands they're a little too flat.

If the painter is looking to sell his services I would suggest that he works on his edge highlighting as it'll improve the overall look of the model tenfold, and allow him to charge more for his commisions. Of course, highlighting *does* drastically increase the amount of time it takes to finish a model but hey...

His stuff is good, above tabletop quality, although its by no means great. I would probably utilize his services if I wasn't so insistent on painting stuff myself (since his work reminds me of my own).
