So I mentioned in another thread that crooked images are still the biggest problem in the gallery. Usually I disable voting on them but I'm considering deleting them since I can't imagine anyone enjoys looking at sideways images, even if some of them are pretty good.
What do people say?

Yes, definitely. If the image gets deleted they can then open it in something like paint then simply rotate it and upload it again.
If they're bothering to crop the image they might as well, it's only about 3-5 extra clicks at most.

yup Takes next to no time to orientate an image before posting. We all make mistakes but this is easily corrected by the poster. It is sloppy to let it slide. When you load the pics to the computer there is a button to press in the picture viewer and it is done. Would the rotation be due to people taking pics with mobys and loading to the gallery directly?

No. People have taken the time to upload photos to the Gallery, and I think it would be unfair to simply delete them. A better solution IMO would be to send out an automated PM to the user and ask them to change it. Perhaps a quick rotation tool in the "edit image" folder would not go amiss too?

Perhaps better standards for what gets posted in the gallery?
Such as no unfinished models unless they represent a series that shows progress of how a model is completed?
Kid_Kyoto, can you elaborate on further reasoning why images that are sideways be excised from the gallery in the OP?

Is there maybe just some easy way to flip it? We could flag images for review, then the mod could get in there and do the flip? Worst case, this is still the same process that would need to be done to delete images, and it means we don't lose the otherwise nice pictures like posted above. I'm not sure if there is any existing (and free) code to do an image rotation, but I gotta imagine a 90 degree pixel transformation wouldn't be terribly hard. Bam. Add some implementation for the creators to rotate, and mod level access to do it on images already saved, and we're good?

Or take the extra 30-40secs to rotate the image when cropping it before the upload.

For you and me, sure. Johnny Twelve-year-old doesn't know how to use the photo editing software too well, but he can figure out how to get his shiny new Ultramarines that actually don't look too shabby onto Dakka.

hmmm, but it is not a great deal of effort required. If ypou are ging to take the time to upload, do it properly.
They haven't bothered to take the time (which is minimal) to rotate before uploading.
If people can't be considerate enough to show it the right way round, why should we be bothered to look.
It shows a certain degree of disdain to other members.
First rule of Dakka is to be polite.
It is a matter of courstesy to show the in the correct manner.
If i understand it correctly, the gallery is hosting the pictures.
They are taking up space and presumably costing the owners to host these images.
A minimal amount of effort to put up pictures correctly is he least one can expect of us members. o

I voted "yes". I put up a sideways one, and I believe KK commented on it "Rotate?"
I didn't have the pic saved and it was old, so I just went in and deleted it, anyway. Would've saved me a step to just have it deleted the first time

Or ya know you could add a rotate option to the image so the uploader can change it
EDIT: Apparently HTML cant do that.... (at least in any easy way)

Also, another suggestion... would it be too much work for lego to add a "rotate" functionality to the uploader? So that, intsead of deleting, you could simply rotate the image in question? It would take about the same amount of time, likely, and wouldn't result in anyone upset over deleted images.
That said, this probably requires too much coding to be practical, but it wouldn't hurt to suggest it to lego if you think he might be up for it (he implemented the pop-up messages in the swap shop after we asked, after all!)

Im thinking that would need to be some javascript work there

I wouldn't say delete them outright - while they are annoying, it doesn't seem fair to just delete someone's images because of the orientation. That said, I would add in a function to allow users to rotate - and on the Upload page (where it tells you not to upload non-wargaming pics and the like) put another notice that tells people to re-orient their images in the gallery controls if necessary. An automated PM, as someone else suggested, could also be sent out to posters of sideways/upside-down images to let them know that it needs to be fixed.
I should note that I have very little experience with coding/html in general, so I can't really say if this is feasible or not.

i voted delete. if you're technically competent enough to take a digital picture (or convert a physical one) and upload it onto a website, then you're competent enough to click a button or pull down menu on every picture viewing/editing program i've ever seen.
even if there is a function added to dakka to fix the program, why would someone who uploaded a skewed photo and had multiple chances to fix it beforehand do it then when they didn't before? it not the gallery mod's job to fix bad photos but to police the gallery to make sure inappropriate ones don't get added... just like it's not the swap shop mods' job to make sure crappy looking minis don't get traded but just that people trade while following the rules.

This argument says they should be left as they are. Just because they aren't correctly orientated, doesn't make them "inappropriate". That category is for non-wargaming pics.

I think delete them, but send out a pm to the user saying their gallery image was deleted due to incorrect orientation.
As others have said, it takes maybe 10 seconds tops to rotate an image after cropping it in any decent image software (I recommend GIMP, it's free and it's great for cropping, light balance and rotation tasks)

i'm not saying the pics are inappropriate if sideways but that fixing them isn't the mods job; their job is to make sure inappropriate ones aren't uploaded (like your example of nonwargaming pics). my point is for the people suggesting that lego program a turn function onto the gallery... people that didn't use it when it was available free on their computer won't just magically use it when its on dakka and that it's not up to the mods to fix that either... so we'd be left in the same position (with sideways pics) that we had before lego spent time programming in the function. adding the ability to fix that is of limited use since everyone who uploads already HAS that function on the device they upload with. dakka has become the largest gallery of wargaming pics recently according to lego's announcement and they're now making a concerted effort to increase the *quality* of those pics also (see the new showcase subforum).
edit:
hey cadian, where did you get the tyberos pic you uploaded to the gallery from? the model looks cool but i've only seen the grainy one from IA 9.

Not everyone has Photoshop/GIMP.
Not everyone may realize that MS Paint has a rotate option. I know I didn't until I went looking for it.
All I'm saying is a small button next to the automatic contrast option would probably make a difference.

I wouldn't delete them either, but send the user a PM asking him to do so. Maybe tell him it will be deleted if he doesn't repost a rotated version himself.
That will allow them to upload better ones and reconfigure any links in P&M threads and the like without everyone else being annoyed at opening a P&M thread and not seeing any pictures because they were deleted for rotation.
