Not everyone may realize that MS Paint has a rotate option. I know I didn't until I went looking for it.

All I'm saying is a small button next to the automatic contrast option would probably make a difference.

i doubt it but it can't hurt also. the default windows picture viewer (double click any pic on a pc and windows photo gallery will preview the image) only has eight buttons total and two of them are rotate ones... if that ease of use isn't enough for 90% of users out there on pc's who post sideways pics, i doubt anything will help. i have zero idea of how hard that would be to implement but i wouldn't be opposed to having it added as well as mods deleting sideways pics.

I'd say delete them. And, write a message explaining why the picture was deleted and how to go about correcting it using MS Paint that gets sent to the person.

Yes. Id like to see some major editing in the gallery. Stuff that needs to go:

sideways pics
extremely poor/blurry pics
stock photos from GW, PP, etc
motivationals & the like

stuff that could possibly go:

older WIP pics
minis with 17 different views...shouldnt need more than a couple

Im sure theres more for both lists, but thats all Ive got for now.

Whats my game?

i'm not saying the pics are inappropriate if sideways but that fixing them isn't the mods job; their job is to make sure inappropriate ones aren't uploaded (like your example of nonwargaming pics). my point is for the people suggesting that lego program a turn function onto the gallery... people that didn't use it when it was available free on their computer won't just magically use it when its on dakka and that it's not up to the mods to fix that either... so we'd be left in the same position (with sideways pics) that we had before lego spent time programming in the function. adding the ability to fix that is of limited use since everyone who uploads already HAS that function on the device they upload with. dakka has become the largest gallery of wargaming pics recently according to lego's announcement and they're now making a concerted effort to increase the *quality* of those pics also (see the new showcase subforum).

Not exactly sure how old your camera is or functionality available, but I know that mine allows me to essentially skip my hard drive entirely when uploading to Dakka. I just plug in my camera and start uploading straight from it. I'd take advantage of a rotate(or other edit) option, as that means no need to save it on my disk space to edit or rotate.

That said, I'm pretty sure my Camera lets me rotate pictures on its preview screen, anyway.

mine is relatively new but certainly not close to a top of the line model. unless yours has a dakka easy button (lol), it's probably treated just like plugging in a thumb drive. if so, the same preview function works on it as does your hard drive with a double click. i guess i'm of the mindset that if you're going to post a pic on a site, there should be a middle step between taking it and publishing it. YMMV.

I can see the mindset for that, but I choose which to upload and which not to. Often times, those I post are the best results of 5-7(or more) of the same shot. The again, I'm not one for taking sideways shots. I'll admit to badly lit shots, though. I really need to get a booth set up since natural light is hard to get into my house(it faces North/South with no side windows because of the fact that all the houses are so close together).

One thing to keep in mind is our gallery is not like CMOT's it's here for anyone to put up anything wargaming related they find useful. I have a huge collection of WWII posters so people can add them to terrain or remix them as 40k posters. There's also pics of real world tanks and military, shots from games, color schemes etc. They all have a place. But anything that is not a model to be rated should have voting turned off.

Mad4Minis wrote:Yes. Id like to see some major editing in the gallery. Stuff that needs to go:

I've been killing the poor pics, but usually putting up a notice for a bit so the poster and others can see the warning.
I've no problem with reposted images, sooner or later they might go down on the main site or be blocked on the main site for some users. But I disable voting when I can tell it's from the manufacturer's site.
Motivationals and humor have a place on this site, they ain't going.

I see no reason to get rid of older WIP shots, even the dullest shot can stay, it'll just get voted down.
Yeah the multiple redundant pics are a big annoyance for heavy voters but taking them down means deleting perfectly good shots and has the mods deciding what pic should represent someone's work. I don't have any good ideas for what to do about that.

Is it a hassle to rotate them via dakka?
Is it a hassle to inform the poster their images are skewed for fixing?

If the answer to the above is yes then delete/archive. If no (assuming its a 2 second job) then fix them via dakka.

I agree that if people want their images seen the least they can do is take some time to make sure they are correctly framed etc but mistakes do happen as do newbies and sloppyness.

By that criterion any old gak at all should be left in the gallery, no matter how terrible it may be. We decided long ago to delete images of low technical quality. Incorrect orientation falls into that area IMO.

CadianXV wrote:A better solution IMO would be to send out an automated PM to the user and ask them to change it. Perhaps a quick rotation tool in the "edit image" folder would not go amiss too?

What happens when the user doesn't change it?

Why would the user use a rotation tool in the gallery when they couldn't be bothered to use one before uploading? And it is more work for Legoburner which might be better spent doing something that has to be done inside the forum.

I vote yes for deletion.

How about just adding a button to the gallery that lets the user spin the image clockwise or counter clockwise.. Other galleries do that too.

People may have "taken the time to upload photos to the gallery", but in many cases I've noticed that they haven't taken the time to:

1)title images
2)describe images
3)tag images
4)mark images as being created by them

...which would be the real mark of investiture of time in my opinion. I'm all for deletion of sideways images.

As KK alluded to in his post, the Dakka gallery does not exist as a repository for any old junk, even if it is wargaming related. There is a quality standard, even though the bar is set quite low, nevertheless a standard is there to be upheld.

I don't see it as being onerous or difficult for a disclaimer to exist at point of upload reminding the user to orient pictures properly or they will be deleted

It would cost development effort that might be better used on a more important feature unique to the forum.

If people can't be bothered to orient their pictures on their PC using their image software, why would they orient them on their PC using the forum software?

To look at it from a different angle, what does the gallery lose if all the incorrectly oriented pictures are deleted?

Many people use irfanview for watching pics. Takes a second to rotate pics there. Takes the same time for a mod to rotate the pic as to delete it. If mods are concerned about the few pics, why not rotate them yourself?

Because the end goal should be that people post pictures correctly. The responsibility for correct posting should be on the uploader, not the mods.

If we leave the responsibility to the mods, people will get lazy and post pictures expecting the mods to correct them.

If we deleate pictures (it's about the same amount of work for the mods), it should force people to take the time to make sure they post correctly on their own. Hopefully, reducing the load on the mods long term.

I'd happily rotate the couple I've got posted that are sideways, if the Dakka gallery had an option to do so.

I'm not sure, but I think that mine get autorotated based of camera metadata or something (so it looks fine in iphoto and my file system), but if I upload the raw files that metadata is ignored.

I'd leave them.

Some people may no longer have the source photo. If you delete it the image may be gone. I know for a bunch of my stuff at the moment... If Dakka decided to delete them, the images would be gone, as I just got a new computer, and the old PC is dead. I could PROBABLY get the data reovered but it would cost rediculous amount sof money.

Delete em, but tell the poster that you're doing so. It's really easy to rotate an image, and frankly I don't know why more people don't do so. Whatever photo viewer you have usually has the option to right there.

For what it's worth I just reviewed 200 new images and none of them were crooked. Interesting. Maybe word is getting out?

Anyway on a rotate button it would be great but my understanding is that in this gallery it would be hard. Lego can she more light on that, but the short answer is it won't be soon.

It's now something 85% in favor of deleting. Unless someone has a brilliant new take on the idea I'll start the purge this weekend.
