What amy did people go with when they first started playing? I know each army has it's own set of appeals that people love/hate that drives them to collect them.

My love affair began with Tau Empire. I mainly loved tau because i'm a huge lover of giant robots, and their battlesuits looked awesome. Also loved the crisp clean look of all the tau units and them being one of the lease addictied to the policy "Hate everything thats not you".

For me it was the Black Templars. They were on the cover on the 3rd edition rulebook, and I was like " I HAVE to have them!!!"

Never looked back!

Orks.

I started playing them in Fantasy, because my brothers recommended them. one wanted an ablative sheild, the other a more target rich environment.

when they started playing 40k, after buying the SM/DE starter set, i realized that we would never play fantasy again, and so i chose to use orks, since i could do some converting to make the Fantasy boyz into 40K boyz.

I started fantasy with the box containing High Elves and Goblins (4th edition I think - correct me if I'm wrong). First I wanted to start with the HE (due to me being young and not having the money for a full blown O&G army) but my love fell to the greenskins immediately thanks to their models and fun play style. So as soon as I got a few funds to spare i started with the green tide.
After a further excursion into the realm of the undead (VC & TK), I switched over to 40K and got hooked on CSM.
I bought the AOBR box to convert the containing SM to follow the eightfold path I got a few Orks with it as well - so I'm just back at the beginning of the whole addiction and do Orks as my second 40K army.

It's been awhile since I started with that first fantasy box and till today I feel no regret for any of my model choices

Saw Marines, fell in love .. .. "ahem" in a platonic sense I swear! Have always loved the armoured look and the light robot feel to them.

Had I started 5 years later though, Tau would have been my first choice.

If you mean into 40K as a whole, Imperial Guard because of Dawn of War.

If you mean just the tabletop game, Space Marines from the AoBR set.

I got into Tau in BFG because I couldn't stand the thought of the flying cathedrals the Imperials fly.

Then I got a 40k Tau army...

Within a month I fell in love with Imperial aesthetics and put my Tau in storage. Now I have over 3000 points of Guard.

My first army was Tau.. I loved the looks of the models and I loved the fluff (For the Greater Good!). They are my first love of 40K. What got me the point of playing 40K was Var Saar gang from Necromunda. Necromunda was the first miniatures game that I played... So when the rest of the people I played with moved to 40K, well, call me a lemming.

Got me interested in 40k, or got me into actually buying minis?

Eldar definitely. Loved the look of the models and the fluff when I started getting more into it. I also liked the look of SM and Tau or, as my friends like to call them, the "smooth" armies.

I played Orks for about a year or so. Didn't like the models, had no motivation to paint them properly except for a squad of 10 Nobz, the fluff didn't interest me, and I was getting bored of the game because of them...
Eldar saved everything for me though heh.

I started with orks just before the current book came out. Go them since they weren't popular, but still potent. Didn't get any games in with the old book sadly.

Quickly moved to sisters as my second army, still play orks from time to time, but I've got like 6 armies (SM, ork, SoB, grey knights, DE, daemons) and I've played with everything except for necrons and nids (borrowed armies, or proxied for someones practice game).

Originally the Eldar and tyranids, when I first saw 40k in elementary but the race that eventually inspried me to play a few years later were the Tau. I just always liked their high tech appearance. I didn't like playing them though because I hated the fact that aside from Kroot close combat is never an option during any of the games. They have my favorite fluff in the game though and I always liked painting Battlesuits back in the day. But that army is long gone now though. Had to pay for more Marines. Looking back on it now I kind of regret it simply because they were my first army =(.

I'm surprised nobody said Daemons: I started out in fantasy, had a Daemon army and thought to buy the 40k book for them and a soul grinder. 2 soul grinders later (for a total of 3) I was hooked

Daemons are relatively recent though, is why. At least daemons as their own army, they were always part of CSMs, but CSMs are boring to many players, so eh.
