Hi Dakka users. today i just purchased a citadel spray gun from my local hobby store, and i have decided to give you a review on it.
1. pure crap! it sucks .the valve that connects the propellant to the gun is very flimsy and not very airtight even when tightened with pliers.
2. the main gun is plastic and is very frigile my freind also got one at the same time as me and dropped his and the trigger and nozzel just competely shattered.
3. the glass paint jar has uneven porportions when mixing coulors with water. i followed the instructions perfect and my paint just competely didnt cover my models the way i was expecting it to.
to make thinks work it cant even spray metalic paints.
my advice to you dont buy this crap. Save your money.
a very pissed oceanice

I personally don't by stuff from GW very much with the exception of their models of course. Hell, most of the time the paint I buy is from a different company.
GW tends to overprice things when you can get something equal to or better for cheaper.

My reaction was to take said die, and hurl it out the window of the 3rd floor of our student union. I then placed a Commissar model next to the rest of my dice pile. They immediately began performing much better. |

My question is
Why did you even think that was going to be worthwhile? clearly just by looking at it you can tell it's a cheap plastic knockoff. I used to be hardcore "legitadel" and only buy gw stuff. but their painting gear isn't stellar. the effect you desire is far easier to achieve by actually shelling out for an airbrush

My biggest problem is the paint is consumed pretty damn fast, and around 4 bucks a pot, I am not a fan.
I would just recommend that people buy a army painter spray can and prime + base coat at same time.

Actually, I'd say it's good as a 'my first spraygun' kind of thing. It's not good, but it's not hugely bad either IMHO.

I see your point on "cheap alternative" but you get what you pay for.
I have heard nothing but "meh" on those sprayguns at best and at worst "RAAAAGGGEE"
If you can't afford an airbrush, that's cool i guess but.. It's GW. You don't get into it unless you have a lot of money to spend (or rich parents)
Makes me wonder why GW is aiming at teens nowadays (who aren't the ones who can afford to be buying it) it just doesn't make sense

It is not an airbrush and doesn't pretend to be one.
AFAIK it is okay for applying one colour on a larger surface, better than a tank brush, that's what it is for. If you pay 200$ or more, there are of course better alternatives.

It does what it's supposed to and it does it well. There are better sprayguns out there, but as long as you're not expecting it to work like an airbrush, it works.
I certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone serious about getting spraygun.

Perhaps if you tried it out for longer than a day?
Granted, it is not the best tool in the world, but you can make do with it.
I got a really cheap (£5) airbrush that, while not amazing and prone to stoppages occasionally is good enough, and you can work around the problems.
Still much better than painting things by hand

*sigh*
This is probably the prime example of people being GW knockoffs. I have used a GW spraygun for about 3 months, learning all the tips and tricks to it, especially using a backboard to reflect the sprayed paint back on the model, and also how to paint effectively. I used an airbrush recently (friends got one) and they are for quite different uses.
If you use a spraygun for a single time and rage about it, keep trying, simply because it may just be inexperience, not the tool.

Yes, but the point is you have used it for a day. You can't learn to drive a car in a day, or fly a plane in a day. It takes time and practice to get it right.

I painted my valkyrie light grey and dark grey stripey with one. it looks fething awesome.
Other than that, I hate the darn thing. What a waste of money! grrr.
+ Citadel made it (herp-a-derp) (<----- internet sarcasm)
+ Great for tanks
- Useless for infantry
- Overpriced
- Uses paint far to quickly
- Expensive to maintain (air cannisters)
- Instructions are crap (putting the air cannister or pressure can whatever it is in a pot of warm water gives you much better effect, as it freezes after a couple seconds of use)

You could always go out to Home Depot or some place and pick up a car painter brush thing with a massive gravity feed top jar and use craft paint and water and spray a large amount of paint to basecoat very quickly. My dad got one for 45 bucks.

Unless you are buying models...
STOP.BUYING.GW.CRAP
GW takes cheap to make stuff, like PVA Glue (.99 cents or 8 bucks for the same amount?) and Spray paint (7 bucks or 15 bucks for the same amount?), and over charges it because they know idiots out there will think the Citadel/GW namebrand will mean something.
It does.
It means GARBAGE.
(Instead of buying that crap Citadel calls paint for nearly 4 bucks per .4 ounces, you can buy the SAME acrylic paints for .75 cents for 2 Ounces at a local hobby store.)
I am amazed every time a hobbyists complains of GW prices, but comes back from the register with 30 bucks in paints and brushes when they could have got the same amount of stuff for roughly 4 bucks elsewhere.

Lets not forget Green Stuff. GW buys Green Stuff from Kneadatite, chops it up and repackages it. Oh and marks the price WAY the hell up.
GW Green Stuff - 10 dollars for 0.6 ounces (6 inch ribbon)
Anywhere else - 15 dollars for 3.52 ounces (36 inch ribbon or the tubed version)

And it's really no different than any "name brand" product versus a "generic" product.
Go to your grocery store sometime and compare the price of their branded sodas versus a Pepsi or Coke product. Or their Oreo styled cookies versus actual Oreos.
If you think GW's alone in this, you're sadly mistaken.

I can find 36"x3 rolls of Kneadatite online for about 40 bucks.
Shhhh.... Don't tell GW lol
Kanluwen wrote:If you think GW's alone in this, you're sadly mistaken.
Never did.
This topic is about a specific GW item and how crap it is. I just splintered off into other GW products because we are on a forum for GW products mainly, and I just wanted to warn new hobbyists of the follies of trusting GW's horrid name brand.
I don't see what other products have to do with the discussion.
