I'm going to be playing at a RT shop's Evil Overdrive restricted rules tournament. I brought my Tau to one of these a few months back, and ran a slightly different list, and did OK, but I'm hoping with a little tweaking, I can really perform at this tourney. For those of you who are not familiar with the format, the following special rules apply:

HQ may not have an invulnerable save or more than 2 wounds.
At least 1 Troop choice
No Special Characters
No Pie plates
Armored unit's total armor mustn't add up to more than 32. (So no HH or Skyray)
No night fight

Now I already clarified with the shop, shield drones /w the Shas'El are okay... shield generator is not. So... here's my list, tell me what you think!

Hunter Cadre Blastpath [500]
HQ
Command La'Rua
(1)Shas'El Commander 98
Plasma Rifle, Burst Cannon, HW Multi-Tracker, HW Drone Controller
(1) Shield Drone

Elites
XV8 Crisis Suit La'Rua 92
(1) Shas'Ui
Plasma Rifle, Flamer, Multi-Tracker
(1) Shas'Ui
Plasma Rifle, Burst Cannon, Multi-Tracker

Troops
Fire Warrior La'Rua 85
(6) Shas'La
(1) Shas'Ui Team Leader
Markerlight, Bonding Knife

Kroot Carnivore Mercenaries 110
(14) Kroot Carnivores
(2) Kroot Hound

Heavy Support
XV88 Broadside Team 115
(1) Shas'Ui Team Leader
ASS, HW Drone Controller
(1) Shield Drones

Hmm...

Your heavy support is fine.

Troops looks fine, though I wouldn't suggest the BK and team leader for your fire warriors. Maybe the Bk would be worth it for a larger unit but not a 6-man. I would use those point to get more firewarriors.

Plasma Rifles don't go really well with burst cannons or flamers, so I would change your crisis suits. I would suggest missile pod/burst cannon, which is a good combination.

Your commander's weapons don't go incredibly well together either, I would give him a Missile/Burst cannon as well, or maybe a plasma/missile.

Cottonjaw, I don't see anything wrong with your lists, but thought I'd share my 500 list. I had a memorable, great night (two years ago) given the same special FoC exemptions you've posted. I won 6 outta 6 games. I tabled 4 of them, #5 had one model left and #6 was the red shirt, also playing tau, but a different list. Mine:
Warfish w/ 11 FWs, BK
Shas'el FK +
3 FireStorms
Just under 500.

I class myself a medium/good player (back then, too), but the FSs and Warfish were just pouring out the fire power.

Given that new SW & MechIG weren't around then, and AT that blocks LoS is largely gone, it might not fare as well now in 5e, but the list still surprised the heck outta me.

But you must admit, the suit load-outs could be slightly better, correct?

Right, TB. Yeah, I did see the first PR/flamer, but got distracted (Away From Keyboard and finished posting a while after I started).

*That* load-out does need to be remedied. Cottonjaw, doncha think that with a really empty table (4x4, right?) that having a flamer is really unnecessary? Given a FK or FS? Unless you know there's TFG who has two trucks fulla orks or whatever the goofery is for green skins at 500 (I'm glad I didn't face the one ork player at last week's 500 night ).
