Im trying to build a codex for my sm chapter, and i want to make it look good. what programs should i use? how should i build it? and i need help with the fluff. post your ideas here. the chapter strives for honour above all else, and are basically all Arthurian knights. I will post the final copy when its done

Photoshop for graphics, Adobe for the layout?

thanks, that seems about right.
I still need some ideas for fluff, i gave the basic ideology of them, but ive got maybe a page at best so i need more.
by adobe yo mean type in adobe or do it in world and print to adobe?

the chapter name is the Knights of the Emperor, and the chapter master is Gawain (the almost perfect knight) and their primarch was Arthur.
see i said they were all arthurian knights.

If you want to have chapter fluff that doesn't make people groan, avoid using "primarch" or "lost legion" in your fluff
Switch it to captain / chapter master and it becomes 100% more easy on the ears.and try not to go overboard/full on cheese with your SCs.

Use a basic bog standard word processor to type all your fluff rules and gumpf out.

Use something like Publisher for layouts.
Elements or GIMP or similar for image manipulation.

Obviously, if you want it to look like GW's official codexes you could use......the same programs!

Anyway.

so long as your project is legible I wouldn't worry about its ultimate style, no one else will.

Microsoft Publisher is quite good (from what I remember - it has been quite a while since I last used it) for laying everything out.

i just think that the 1st founding chapters are less codex...
except ultras, i mean all the non-vanilla sm codexes are other 1st founding chapters (BA, GK, SW etc...)

Yes, that may have been their intention, but in reality it's a huge faux pas. It's widely considered a lazy writing technique to just say "yeah they were a lost legion, and i'm just gonna go ahead and make up a primarch with X reference to history / culture"
I looked up a lot of tutorials on writing your own chapter, and every one of them warned against using the "lost legion / inventing a primarch" route as being a noob move and really lame to whoever is reading your fluff.
I don't mean to shoot you down, but you'll have to face the fact that if you choose that option people will scoff at that section of your fluff and it will likely put them off.

Keeping the two missing legions unknown is part of the greatest charm of the 40k universe, not everything is known. We don’t what happened to them, we don’t know why they were expunged from the records and we don’t want to know.

kk i was looking at publisher and how the hell does it work!!!!
also my avatar is the captain of the second (bike) company, but he is normally on a bike,
he is a great indication of my chapter colour scheme.
and 1st founding or not people in need more fluff!

For publisher you have to write in text boxes. Everything else is pretty much easy. Drag boxes where you want them, drag picture where you want them, use a master page to add various details on every page, ect. If anything, publisher is one of the easier Microsoft systems to use...

I need fluff people: that's what the topic is supposed to be about!
the reason i want outside input is because i dont want to make the chapter and have everyone laugh at it, I want feedback and input into my creation

Well people give you input such as don't use the lost legions ect. As for fluff ideas seeing that your going by king arthur and his knights just read the book about them.

If you are going with knights of the round table, have the titular name of each company be one of the knights of the round table. Give the remaining names to important non captain ranks. Avoid giving your chief librarian the name Merlin.

Give them sort of relic of the Emperor they are looking for. They go on quests to find it.

The whole king arthur thing doesn't give us a lot to build on, besides just pasting it onto 40k equivalents

Most, Not all. Black Templars are a second founding Chapter of the Imperial Fists.

They are very overdone, and usually by people who create the Mary Sue Marines.

Yep. Do it like me. Think it through for 3 years. Then build them. And make like what I did minus all the details i put in. Which makes them a thoughtout chapter that has alot of mystery behind the history of their origins.

Maybe an IF successor chapter. They crusade about. Very humanitarian. Very noble and despise sneaking about. Lots of chaplains. Not quite fanatical but their faith is also rooted in their martial honour. Very stubborn but will recognise when they need to change a course of action.

What type of chapter do you want? Do want a chapter that has a crusader or knightly feel? Do you want to base your chapter on a certain organization or culture? Do want them to specialize in certain aspects? Do you want them to be human like or Robots? Basically you just need to fill in the answers. And give us a detailed response. Also Welcome to dakka dakka.
