...what would you do?

Comments from another thread about price rises and profitability yadda yadda yadda got me thinking - if GW went out of business (and making the assumption no one wanted to buy the assets/IP etc.) and there were no more Citadel (or Forgeworld) miniatures, no more Codices or army books, no updates or FAQs, no 6th/9th editions to come, what would you do? Continue with your armies in their current state, never to evolve? Start with another system such as Warmahordes? (Assuming you don't play any others now.) Create your own rules?

Play spaceship games more frequently...spend the money I would for GW on other companies like Spartan games. Though I enjoy GW games, I don't play them exclusively. I would still keep the armies and play 5th ed rules.

Probably stop wargaming all together. I think the only reason I still do it is their prices seem reasonable for lower budget incomes. PP makes it impossible to justify buying anything from them, as most squads they sell seem to come in at a ludicrous price. I dunno, I can't justify buying battle forces from GW, let alone a handful of metal miniatures.

I would keep playing with the current rules as is, or update codexes with friends' help: make it a group effort and get all armies up to the same snuff. Maybe create a system for our own special characters: a certain number of points that can be put into a stat-line: about 35-40 points (guesstimate) spread out between WS, BS, S, etc etc, 2 special rules per model (nothing OTT). Could work. But yeah, I wouldn't quit unless everyone else in my area quit too.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Judging by how quickly games systems like Helldorado have been picked up, I could imagine WH40K et al would find a new home.

The positive side though, whoever bought it, would probably not want to find the finances to keep up the hobby shops etc, and I could imagine a much scaled down organisation, possibly run for the right reasons, with a staff who can learn from past mistakes.....

Although, saying that, look at Rackham.....

Fair play, I've not heard that PP stuff was regarded as expensive, mostly only seen/heard it said about GW.

I would totally load up on everything I could in their "going out of business sale" and then the next three years of my life would be planned out.. also, I'd scour ebay for rare models.

Then when I finally got bored, I'd write my own version of 6th edition 40k and then write my own RP game based of Necromunda.

GW makes really good models, and those plastic models require a lot of initial research and development. If GW goes under, every miniatures company out there will want to buy the licenses and molds.

GW may die, but Warhammer will live on.

For that alone, I feel that my current painting/building/hobbying is not going to waste. There will always be another Grav-Tank to buy and there will always be another Tyranid to convert.

Hell, maybe the new company that buys the Warhammer licenses will actually make a decent game out of it. Maybe then I'll actually play Warhammer for once.

I'd literally cry as 9 years of a hobby would've gone down the drain and a big part of my life would have gone too. Then I'd look at my massive pile of stuff and cry some more knowing there would be no point in building all my models.

Continue playing with friends and just make custom rules.. Its not as if GW would take back all their models if they went out of business.. (Although I imagine theyd try)

Well, then a lot of investors would be irate and I would join in the giant lawsuit against those who did not notifiy me, the investor, the possibility of "going concern".

Yes, I support the Company I buy my toys from. I own their stock and I don't want to see them go bust. Besides, when my wife says to me - why did you spend that much on toy soldiers? I can reply, well they had a crappy quarter so I am helping them out.

On the other side, I could care less if the discount/online stores went bust. If you play at any local gaming store you're doing them a disservice by not buying from them. Support your local gaming store, buy your stuff from them. Otherwise you won't have a local gaming store to play at.

That's assuming a GW going out of business sale doesn't equal a price raise. You never know.

I'd probably keep my current army as is, playing small games with anyone who wants to and keep it on display. And then get into Infinity. Actually I may get into Infinity even if GW doesn't go bust, I just have to get to a country where I can buy the models in a store and see them in person.

Even if GW went bust the IP is worth something. Someone would want the rights to Warhammer and Space Marines and the rest. D&D didn't disappear because TSR went belly up, the product is worth to much even if the parent company is broke.

Go on their site, blows the idea that GW are overpriced compared to their competitors out of the water imo.

As for what I'd do if GW went bust? I'd stop wargaming, I have no interest in the other alternatives.

I'd probably still play 40k with people who like playing 40k. I get most of my stuff on eBay anyway, so wouldn't be a huge deal. I mean, I'd prefer if GW didn't go bust, but I'd still have my hobby.

Continue playing... The people from the store we could rally together and take down the indepent stockists (who sells many and varied gaming models and has a LARGE area with tables) would keep the hobby alive. We'd also most likely, combined, buy everything the store has... bar LOTR models.

After a while we'd cumulativly create 6th ed 40k and update all the codexs as we see fit. If GW went under the hobby would live on in each and every gaming club in its own little wierd way...
