Subject: Looking for entertaining army. 'Nids?

Hello Dakkadakka, I am a pretty intense player of all things warhammer and I currently have 2 space marine armies(Smurfs and a homegrown chapter) and a Tau army. However, I am getting really weary of the Smurfs. They are not fun to paint, not that fun to play, have no theme and are generally kind of boring. My father plays the Guard(massive army) and my tow brothers play Orks, Demons, and Chaos Marines. None of those armies interest me. I'm thinking 'Nids would be a fun, entertaining army with good painting oppurtunities. I am really drawn toward the big Monsters, but I have NO idea how to play 'Nids. I really like the Carnies, the Warriors, the Raveners, and the Trygons/Mawlocs. For little 'Nids I like the Gargoyles and the Hormagaunts. I want to play a very CC army, but one that does have one or two guns. Zoanthrope maybe? I am basing this PURELY off looks, as I have no 'Nid experience nor a 'Nid codex.
I've been working on a fun colour scheme and I think I am going to jungle theme it.
So, Dakka, can you please help me out:
-Should I play 'Nids?
-If so, can anyone make a quick list of a monster heavy army, yet one that plays to win at least a little and is balanced?(ie: I don't want all super monsters to get shot up by Tau)
Also, I am willing to trade some of my Smurfs for unassembled 'Nids. Also, willing to sell.
Sorry, my English can be a little rough from time to time.
-Luther

I'm guessing this is "interesting" fun not "have a laugh" fun. If it's latter... orks mate
A mosnter heavy Nid list would probably have something like hive tyrant/swarmlord with hive guard, a smattering of gaunts or lots of warriors, a trygon prime or two, mawloc maybe or a brood of fexs. This is a guess since I don't play nids

Interesting fun.
Also, if they are any awesome conversion ideas out there, I love doing conversion armies. The more theme, the better.

Enjoying conversions will be an absolute necessity for a codex that does not have an official model for 1/3 of it's units so you have that going for you.
If you're bored with SPESS MUHREENS then 'nids may actually be a perfect army for you. They are far, far removed from the point and click obvious play style that marines have. You have really, really got to know the big picture with your bugosaurs to make all the pieces of your machine work in concert and even then you need to have your head on a swivel to adapt to what comes up. It is definitely a finesse army and, frankly, a lot of fun to play. Just get used to getting shafted by GW. Constantly.
The best advice for any starting 'Nid player is to play the game. A lot. Find friends that will not in the least mind you proxying like a madman on crack. There is seriously no way to learn the codex other than getting in the trenches, rolling lots of dice and trying one of everything in the codex. Use it all, see what works, make up your own play style...then give up on the Pyrovore because yes it really is that bad.

Its not really a good time to start a 5E codex Xenos army.
The MC army you want is difficult to build since tervigons, tyrannofexes, and harpies don't have GW models. There is an opportunity for conversionwork but it is difficult to model such a big creature and have it look good. Chapterhouse studios does have a carnifex conversion kit that takes a carni box and changes it to a tervigon but you are still missing tyrannos and harpies.
I don't think you particularly care about nid horde armies but the main problem with them is the large number of models you are moving across the field, and the droves you take off as casualties. Playing back to back games is a bit draining.
As for another entertaining army...
Dark eldar look like boatloads of fun and I personally want to play them too but I wouldn't bother buying anything because most of the codex options lack models.
Basically, patience is a nice if you can wait for models for the newer 5E xenos armies. If you can't wait, they are a bit underwhelming unless you are willing to mass convert stuff or mass proxy.

I love playing Tyranids and there are many ways to play them. I find them hard in apocalypse games because people love to shoot them.

Thank GW for giving Tyranids one of the toughest units available then - unless your opponent has loads of D strength weapons lying around, he's going to find it pretty tough to knock down the Hierophant. And even if he does, he'll concentrate so much firepower on it that the rest of your force will be pretty good by the time it gets into assault.

Do you own a hierophant, because they are damn expensive.

My fiancee bought me one for Christmas.
Still not built, but just looking at the stat line you can see how tough they are.
