In our charmIng little island nation our government has decided that they are going to increase fuel duty , which in turn will increase haulage costs which I have horrid feeling gw wil up prices again , just to round them up,or am I just being paranoid ,what do people think?

My guess is that GW will take it on the chin and absorb it into the annual price increase round in the summer.

Apart from anything else, there is a cost associated with propagating price changes through the system, so it is best not to do them too frequently.

I don't suppose GW will raise prices solely because of the fuel duty increase but you can pretty much bet the house on them increasing prices this year, usually around April time.

I thought somebody had guessed that one of the last price increases was forward thinking: taking into account rises in VAT and fuel costs.

I didn't think they would increase them twice in the same year. I would expect them to change their pricing structure mid year as usual though.

Right about time for the Grey Knights release.

"Look brand new fancy GK mins...$75 (US) for a squad of 5". Then as soon as people start to complain they notice that the regular SMT are now $60 a box.

As much as Id like to complain, I dont plan on buying much from GW this year. Some new GK stuff...GKT for sure, maybe more if the stuff looks good, and a relatively small Forgeworld order. GW only stands to get a couple hundred bucks out of me this year, unless they pull off some really awesome GK stuff AND new Necrons.

I think this year is gonna be about other game systems. Im eyeballing some Warmachine jacks, the Battletech anniversary deluxe box, Leviathans if its released, some Firestorm Armada shipsto play Full Thrust with, maybe more. Ive got a big itch for some real scale armor (tank) modeling too.

Of course, ounce you get the FA minis you can also play...FA .

Seriously though, I am in the same boat. My Guard army is about as big as I want it to be at the moment (about 4,000 points), and I would much rather spend my money on the cool stuff that Spartan is pumping out. Not to mention the new set of Axis & Allies: War at Sea due out in August!

After watching a box of chaos marines increase by £5 for... nothing, nothing at all since I started 40k in 2007, i'm wanting less and less to do with GW. I hate price increases as much as the next guy, but this is getting ridiculous; in a few years will we all be paying £30+ for the same boxes we pay £20 for now?

Going into the world of work, i'm starting to realise (not that i didn't already to an extent) how much £20 or £30 actually is. It isn't the cost of a new game, it's the cost of food. It isn't the cost of a new pair of desginer jeans, it's the cost of a new appliance because the hand-me-down you got finally kicked the bucket. It isn't the cost of a box of miniatures, it's the cost of running your life, the bills you pay, travel costs...

I'd like to expand what I currently have, but if it means spending money I don't have, then i'd rather not, and that's what more and more people will be saying, especially when the economy is brittle and bankers + the gov't + the country is playing the blame game with each other.

To me, it's just inconsiderate. If costs need to go up again, then how much do you keep losing each year? Surely if you're making a loss that requires annual price-hikes then it's time to take a look at your marketting.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I'm far more worried about the price increases that keep hitting fuel, electricity, and water. Hundreds of dollars a year per person, and I don't even get any miniatures after paying out the cash. (

I am wondering if prices won't increase because of the price increase last year. Perhaps it was increased last year so they wouldn't have to this year and the presumed extra income from it would help tide them over for this year.

Which is exactly what GW does not seem to 'get'.

"We need to make X amount this quarter, and sales are tanking!"
"Why?"
"Well, the economy sucks, and our prices are too high already on something that is a luxury item."
"Right. I know - we'll raise prices to make up the difference!"
"Brilliant!"

Seems to be a trend forming here...lots of folks putting less and less into GW product.

GWs price issues are a part, as are many people dissatisfaction with the current rules trends. I also attribute it to fairly large selection of other good games and minis on the market right now.

Already pay rediculous prices in Australia.
As the prices go up, the quality goes down. My best example of this is when I bought a Tau Sky Ray ($78) and half of the engine wasn't molded.

Presumably GW sent you a new model Capt. Rex? Because they will do if asked.

Unfortunately prices do go up, a rough calculation will show that GW have risen prices in line with inflation over the last 15 years. Why all of the gnashing of teeth?

Although some of the plastic models have bucked that trend (Goldswords for example).

Hopefully with the cost savings from the recent changes to the retail end of the company we will not see any further increases until at least 2012.

Filbert, I did a simple calc on excel compounding 3% per year (roughly usual for the UK) for 15 years. I also double checked it here.

http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/historic-inflation-calculator

A handy tool for a number of numbers.

Both come out at roughly around 50%, which is also about what GW are at [with some exceptions].

Now realistically with the areas of the economy that GW deal with (Oil [plastic and transport], property [retail rent, manufacuring and warehousing] metals and labour [minimum wage as well]) I would assume that they have encountered the thick end of the inflationary wedge and could easily have experienced much greater inflation than the overriding national rate.

Well the first thing I though of was to put in £22.50 (the price of a box of Marines) and the year 1998 and it reckons that is the equivalent of £16.79.

Now a box of multi-part Marines in 1998 was £10 because that's what they were first released at for 3rd edition.

So according to that at least, a box of plastic Marines has gone up 60% even when you factor in inflation.

There's also a big difference between, "I can't afford that" and "I won't pay that much for that." That's about where I'm getting with them - and I've been in the hobby since Rogue Trader.
I love my car, it's great - but if the dealer had quoted me a price 60% above what it was actually worth, I'd have walked away on principle - even if I had the cash in my pocket.
Here's another thing hurting them: quality control and time invested to finish a purchase to usable/enjoyable level (especially relative to other companies). For example: about a year ago a friend got me a Gundam model from Bandai. I don't know anything about Gundams, but I like giant beweaponed robots as much as the next guy. Since then, I've acquired and built several of these kits. What immediately struck me about them is that a kit costing the same a landraider assembles in half the time, without glue, is fully articulated down to the engine cowlings (the darn things can nearly do yoga positions) - and doesn't require paint when finished because they are moulded in color! Throw in the fact that they fit together with a precision not approachable by the best GW kit...and you have to wonder what GW thinks people are going to put up with, at what prices, and for how long.

A box of plastic maines was £10 [well £9.99] in 1987 as well, and they had beaks.

@ VoidAngel - you also have to consider that one is the product of a huge Toy/Entertainment industry in Japan and the other is a model from a smallish company in the UK. I would prefer a Landraider

Point taken, but I'd hardly call GW 'smallish'. Relative to Bandai, sure. But honestly, if Chinese companies can rip off the technology used to make gundam models at 95% of the same quality, I'm guessing a company with GW's resources and investments might consider adapting similar methods.

A snap together 4 color landraider with moving treads, doors, weapons, hatches, etc. begins to look more worth the money. As it stands, I'm not paying retail for GW. 1) I have a metric assload of the stuff, 2) Ebay works just fine, usually better.

Subsidising the retail chain.

But I should say without it they would not be where they are now and would diminish without it

@VoidAngel £100-£120m a year is a smallish company, huge in terms of gaming though so I do see your point.

Yeah but back then you got 30 Marines to a box not 10. Anyway, the Marines of 1998 are pretty comparable to what is on offer today, before that most plastics were quite different so you'd be comparing stuff that isn't remotely similar in the box.
