Hello chums!

When im not playing wow or painting minis, me and the missus always watch a few hours a week of Science programmes via the I Player, and tonight we watched this great show..

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00y4yql/hd/Horizon_20102011_Science_Under_Attack/

I just thought i would recommend it. Here are the points in a nutshell.

1. Journalists are absolute walking toilets.

2. The majority of the general public are idiots. (But a slightly higher percentage of Americans are, so we dont have to feel totally bad about it)

3. Ranting in a funny or entertaining way is far more worthwhile than actual peer reviewed literature.

So.. whats to be done then?

Dr Nurse ends the show with a claim that Scientists need to be more willing to enter the media arena to let the truth be known, but it never seems to have helped Richard Dawkins any, so whats the solution? Keep their traps shut and let the Daily Mail do all the talking?!

Your thoughts gentlemen?!

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

The impossible, society-wide answer is for for people to look at news objectively. The realistic answer is a mixture of honesty and PR. My 2 cents.

What about a nice happy medium Cannerus? (Scientist vs Journalist locked in a grip of death. Who will win? Only time will tell)

I would like journalists to be held accountable for poor reporting and other scummy behaviours (like reporting in a sensational way about criminal cases that are currently ongoing.)
Not bloody likely to happen, of course.
Teaching science I run into lots of adamant skeptic kids- too uneducated to understand the complex truth, stubbornly clinging to a simple lie.

Like when you Troll creationists. My word...they demand Science be put under incredible scrutiny, and then, prove singular incapable of using anything but websites based on their kooky little cults which espouse their opinions.

Seriously, I gave up because their bloody minded ignorance became despressing.

P.S. Any chance of hijacking this thread into a general high-brow sciencey news discussion type?

So from this, the theory life is extraterrestrial in origin is strengthened. Not proven of course, that really would be something.

Did you see the 'What is reality?' Horizon that was on a couple of weeks ago?

My mind is still full of feth from that one. It was very interesting. Well, the parts I could follow anyway.

Spoiler:
Completely lost at the whole Hologram bit. Probably should watch it again.

I was suprised by the fact that the detector interfered with the double slit experiment- that wasn't in my QM lectures in Uni. I want to have a look at the published work so I can see what detector he was using.

The holographic universe stuff was interesting, but seemed limited in it's ability to make useful predictions beyond the potential for "blurryness" from the "signal".

Watching the link now matty, Nurse is pretty likeable.

I agree on the level of science the UK population lacks, I had to explane why the sky is blue to my 29 year old sister when one of her kids asked her that question the other day

How about this nugget of information from the BBC news site;
Mobile phone to blast into orbit.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-12253228
If it works concider how cheeply the exploration satellites would be in the future Granted imagen the walk about charge on it when it texts that it has reached Jupiter

Yeah mate i saw that a few weeks back as well. Excellent stuff.

It is mind blowing, but i can kinda understand it. I honestly believe that if we dont wipe each other out, within a couple hundred years, we be bounding across the cosmos and will literally know almost everything there is to know, Science fiction becomes Science fact given enough time.

We just have to hope the Orks dont show up!

Well, they will need a good camera phone then
