Well just a little article of interest. The main jist of it is this, "cooperative games can mimic the organization of gangs and lead to the actual development thereof." So next time you see a D&D gang member walking around peddling dungeon maps on the street corner, tell them about 40k or fantasy and help keep them out of jail!

Better hope they don't play Space Hulk - that game clearly teaches corridor fighting tactics that would be invaluable in a prison riot.
Assuming the inmates had managed to smuggle in a few stormbolters, that is.

This is kidnda old news. The basic gist is that the game puts one person (The Dungeon Master) in a position of authority over other prisoners. This is something that is not allowed in a prison environment.

Well, technically Warhammer wouldn't run afoul of that ruling as there is no 'leader' in a game of Warhammer. Both players are on equal footing.

You know, I am no fan of Fox News, and think the very name is an oxymoron. It's an entertainment organization that happens to riff on current events, in my opinion. However, reading through that article, it seemed to me that they were takin the piss out of the judiciary system more than anything else. Seemed to me Fox was of the opinion that they had better things to do in the court system than wrangle about the repercutions of letting a prison bitch play D&D.

I love how people always denigrate Fox News, but never say anything about ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC or CNN....which are the exact same, just for the left.
I played DnD with a guy who learned how to play in prison. He was not a bad player, but we used a battleboard with figures, and on his turn he would have to get up, walk around the table, stand at the board, decide what to do, walk back to his place....announce a power attack for 1, and then roll a d12 to hit. I quit the group for the rest of the gaming season over that behavior.
Heh come to think of it....the guy also got into painting 40K figures and was pretty good at it. He used to sit next to Dave Taylor of GW fame when Taylor was hobbying in the local GW store.

I played D&D before it was cool.
How are they going to stop people from playing storytelling games? I knew a kid who spent most of his early teenage years in juvie and he said they all played D&D together, and yeah fights broke out over it too, but fights break out over lunch seating in places like that for feths sake. You didn't have the books or dice you just made up rules. The only way to stop people from participating in role playing activities is to disallow talking. Kids in juvie made do with playing cards and paper and pencils. Next thing they'll start debating whether or not to disallow bibles because it encourages fighting against the authority figures of your time (plus if its heavy enough it could be used as a weapon!) I'd rather the pecking order be established by who is Dungeonmaster than by who kicks whos ass when the guard turns his back.

if i was running a prison as warden, the gang of LEAST concern to me would be the one with nerdy kids that models themselves after a d&d adventuring group. the jail simply wanted to screw over that particular felon (which may have been warranted... who knows) and used d&d as the excuse (a rather weak one).

Like I said in the other thread, I doubt D&D is really a serious threat like the prison tries to make it out to be. Banning it for that reason seems pretty stupid to me.
On the other hand, I'm against murderers and rapists (and other violent criminals) being allowed to have luxuries in prison.

You have that the wrong way around
Space Hulk teaches the inmates how large numbers of fast moving vicious hand to hand combatants can over come a small number of gun armed adversaries, in a sequence of narrow corridors.

If you think that is true then you aren't paying attention. It does help that most of those other news shows actually aren't as quite as ideologically driven as Fox. Or as delusional. MSNBC is pretty close though. Still, all them have been under scrutiny before.

As a former corrections officer, this is a bunch of crap.
Im happy to see guys in prison playing D&D for a few reasons.
1-It occupies them. theyre not making trouble while doing it.
2-It provides a reason to behave- since in lock downs you cant get d&d books
3-It means theyre literate and can motivate them to read. There are ALOT of illiterate inmates...
4-Escapism- its lets them take thier imagination some place else- something Im sure most of us can relate to

Oh yay, our beautiful judicial system once again doing our country proud. Seriously, I can see more benefits out of this than anything else....I mean, while they're busy arguing over whether or not they rolled high enough to parry the orc's sword they're not getting together to form prison gangs, and their not plotting to escape. If I were a warden, I'd rather all my prisoners be nerds and geeks gaming rather than hardened gangbangers....
On the topic of Fox News though, all media has a bias, some are more obvious about it than others though, but in this case I don't think it's that big a deal. Fox is just reporting on what happened, and if anything they're on the 'And these are the noble purposes your tax dollars go to folks!' side than the 'We have nobly stopped a secret plot' side.
